I was thinking, about the religious imagery during the sex scene, maybe it is meant to represent what the best of humanity CAN BE. This is what I mean: The Alien woman says that her people wanted to see if humanity was ready to join them in the stars. They took our memories and we failed the test. So why was she still on Earth? To find a suitable candidate to mate with so she could take a part of humanity with her, to her people. Perhaps the Mary and Jesus imagery is meant to represent the child that will be born from her union with Wateri.

Back in the early 2000s when Cinemax ran weird anime movies at like 2 in the morning, I watched this. It was something different I'll give it that. I was still an anime caterpillar not yet exploring stuff beyond the standards of what was on Toonami, so it was quite the treat to see...still really freaking weird though. But a good weird like "Wow, anime can be like this? I want to see more."
Other stuff I saw on weird 2 AM Cinemax: Black Magic M-66, Eiken, X/1999, This weird combat anime where a guy's signature move was severing optical nerves, Special Duty Combat Unit Shinesman, 3x3 Eyes and some other stuff I probably forgot.

But I finally checked it out this year and my experience was exactly the same as yours! The "concept" IS the anime, that's it. Even if there were deeper themes, it doesn't do much with it. But damn, it really is pure, concentrated 90s OVA aesthetics; being solidly entertaining in the process.

A Tree of Palme. It’s a criminally under watched Japanese animated film and the moment I watched it, it was instantly instated as a film classic for me. It’s a reimagining of the famous Pinocchio tale set in absolutely gorgeously realized fantasy world that’s completely alien to anything else in the medium. Accompanied by it is a soundtrack that needs to be recognized for its moment to moment sombers to its moment to moment horrors. It’s animation is nothing less of a masterwork and the story lies in the uncanny valley somewhere between of a fantastical children’s film and a grossly uncomfortable tale of obsession. A must watch.

I'll have to check it out. Seeing you cover this also reminded me of another anime I had forgotten about but was extremely curious about which is "Mermaid's Scar" by Rumiko Takahashi. It looks unlike anything she has done before or since. I remember the trailer being incomprehensible and weird. It just shows a bunch of action only scenes with zero dialogue, explanation or context. It just seemed strange and dark and left a real impression on me even though I only saw the trailer. It gave me some serious David Lynch vibes. So maybe this is something you might also be curious about too.

    @TheCelt93 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Going by the clips I'd guess the film is about, if everyone was separated from the habits and environment they take for granted, what would they choose to do to find value in life? Some turn to rite and religion (the sacrifice), some would say it;s their relationships and lived experiences (the incest couple). The main guy chooses philosophy, knowledge and morality; he becomes a lover of Sophia (philosophy= phil + sophia == love + wisdom). The way these three paths are portrayed, religion is the most communal but also destructive and hysterical, while relationships even if they look strange and perverse can be fulfilling. Philosophy is sublime, it puts you on the same level as the aliens/angels but at the same time it's a more elusive, lonely, and bittersweet path than relationships. I don't think the painting means anything except to make it look like a spiritual act.

Similar vibes, have no idea why someone would make a movie like this or why we watch it but it’s profound. I feel like some art is suppose to leave you with subjective endings and personal feelings. Kinda like how FLCL did before they ruined it with some sequels that it didn’t need and only dropped the value of its worth imo. Not that they are bad but it kinda takes away from the what you’re feeling at the end besides just ending more lost.

One thing though, "unlocking the potential of the human mind" was not the purpose of MK Ultra, quite the opposite, it was meant to try and gain control of the subjects mind, which resulted in merely destroying the person's psyche, it was also used as a tool for interrogation, and psychological torture, it wasn't an AKIRA type thing.

    1. Love the variety of character designs. We have people old, young, short, fat, different races, etc. So rare for anime.
    2. The real terror here is the disgusting actions of the aliens who manhandled an entire species out of flippant bullshit. This was mirrored in the MK Ultra stuff in the opening.
Nah this OVA is way smarter that we give it credit for. The aliens are in the wrong, and no one is moral.

Its art is old af and the voice acting for the movie-length dub cut is so questionable, but kid me thought it was the best. Then you get off and it's just like "Wow, I experienced that." and that's all it needs to be.

How about the 1974 Jack and the Beanstalk? I know that he-who-shall-not-be-named covered this movie some years ago, but it was my very first exposure to anime as a lass and I just thought it was from Canada or New York or some other far away land of strangeness, so it has a special place in my heart and it IS a weird and wonderful little kids' movie. I feel like 70s anime tends to get passed up in favor of 80s and 90s stuff when it comes to retrospective views, but this movie was made smack in the middle of the phenomenon's early days, and it's on films like this that the first great giants of that golden age started to cut their teeth. The director later directed Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, and the princess is animated by Tsuneo Maeda of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Metropolis, and Belladonna of Sadness.

    Some choice cuts:
Crying Freeman - From Kazuo Koike, the creator of Lone Wolf and Cup. Who apparently studied under Takao Saito, creator of Golgo 13. He also wrote Lady Snowblood, which inspired Kill Bill.
And he also wrote the manga that was later adapted as the anime:
Mad Bull 34 - Talk about a Japanese take on American culture.
Apocalypse Zero - Like an NC-17 Kamen Rider in the Apocalypse...or something. Who knows. Just...yeah...
Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma - One of those bloody samurai anime found in the corner of the no no zone at your local mom and pops video store back in the day.
The Guyver Out of Control OVA - Like the Guyver Bio Booster Armor anime but with more graphic violence and hentai tentacles....yeah.
Doomed Megalopolis - M. Bison does supernatural demonic rituals...and spawn a Dick shaped worm that comes out of a woman's mouth
Baoh - By the guy that created JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Another great late 80's OVA.
Spirit Warrior (Peacock King) - Mostly just Episode 1 (Revival of Evil) and 2 ()- Cyborg Nazi Demon Stuff...
X 1999 - The Movie. Including the absolutely ridiculously bad ass Anime Music Video found here on TH-cam.
    M.D. Geist - Another 80's wtf anime.
I'm pretty sure you probably know most of these but whatever.
    Good luck!

Totally forgot about this anime I must've watched about 10 times years ago! It was hilarious watching this video, because I'd pretty much forgotten most things that happen in it!

I thought about this anime today after decades, and found your channel. Subbed, sir. I dig your tastes, going to have to see what's fallen through the cracks for me. I think respecting something for it's ambition even if it doesn't work completely is how I usually operate and why this movie worked for me back in the day. The original Spriggan also had that kinda vibe, batshit stuff happening while the world building fills in the cracks enough for the story to at least make some semblance of sense.

Crazy and wicked, summer 99' NATO bombing my country and I am watching this anime on local TV network. Me and my cousins approximately same age as me were fascinated with this shit.
Watched this again when I maybe 18 or 19 and I started to realize that 80s and 90s anime asthetic is my thing.
Awesome video and awesome channel. I can tell that we have very similar taste.

General appreciation comment, not video specific.
I appreciate the coverage of animes more mainstream commentators ignore - esp when I can go "HEY I'VE SEEN THAT ONE" - but I also love to see Bonsai Pop's take on seasonal blockbusters like Arcane, Edgerunners, etc.
Really, I just think y'all deserve more traffic (and patreon revenue.)

Works better as book. The Aliens wanted to see if exploring was natural to us. The MC's have a bet that if they can get someone to join them on their journey to the end we get our memories back. And its ambiguous but they did have a sneaky tag along at the end so maybe idk

A summer invader the novella "wind" was co English published with is far worse. Its like he was trying to write a romantic junji ito book. He also just re did dracula but I'm Meiji era Japan also kinda hot trash

I was a teen in 90s and I remember seeing this VHS in my local Blockbuster but I never picked it up for some reason. I did pick up a movie called Baoh and it was pretty cool, kinda sad they never made a series tho, or if they did I never found out. Anyways, Im glad this video exists bc now Im interested lol I think I never picked it up bc of the cover art and the name, to me it sounded melodramatic and it just reminded me of romantic anime stuff which I wasnt fond of back then.

I used to download anime in ye olde internet times, and it took hours. You didn't know what you were gonna get, and that's how I wound up watching this one, it was balls to the wall crazy. I think the best thing to come out of those random watchings is "They were eleven". Pretty solid movie with fun and weird elements.

Also I don't know if it was the point of the movie, but the part that seemed important was where Sophia mentioned how he should convince Blondie to come. The beauty of the landscape and all that. Also Blondie talking about following orders from the computer to be safe being bad
