Kaiju No. 8 is a unique shonen. When you think shonen you think anime protagonists in high school, following their dreams. Well, Kaiju No. 8's protagonist, Kaftka Hibino is 32 years old. Life's already beat him down. I'm 32 also...this might get weird.

11:20 "So yeah he gets his special power and is special"
Great video, but that kinda gave me whiplash.
Lotta people out here talking about anime with older protags, but missing the point that Kaiju no 8 is about DEALING with being 32. Makes a big difference
……that’s not what it’s about. He doesn’t deal with that age and instead gets a power granted to him. This story is being MASSIVELY misrepresented by people who seem to have not read it. This is just an ok action shonen. There isn’t anything about it that is particularly special amongst its peers. The mc age doesn’t matter past the first few chapters and isn’t brought up ever again. Their personality is also just Naruto. He even looks like him but with black hair.
@SH1NK1R01 I don't think so, they really make a point to show how his physical state has degraded over the years and he is limited to that as long as he wants to be a hunter
@@callmesp2415 they don’t. At all. Where did you stop reading? Because the moment the initial exams are done that stops being a factor completely. His age is only a factor when not using his powers. That stops happening almost immediately and never reverts. Let’s also keep in mind that he is only a few years older than the captain he is trying to reach Mina. So it was also never about age. He just sucks and couldn’t make the cut. She is also 30 years old and is better then Everyone and looks young.
@@SH1NK1R01 well I started off watching the show, I'm up to ep6 and it still is made a point, I'll see how they deal w it later on, maybe you're right, I'll know soon ig
Cool I still want more anime with old protags
I was waiting to hear that Kafka gets turned into a giant cockroach, but this'll do
omfs same
Same here
Ha, wait until you're 40. You might get a resurgences of will to become the things you always wanted to become.
Or mid-life crisis.
Whatever.
Also, remember one word: pivot.
Word 😏
Ross Geller?
This hit to close to home, I was a 35 year old night manager at a grocery store.😢
Hang in there...I'm closing on 50
Don't beat yourself up. If you like your job then, don't worry about what other people think and if you don't like it, it's not to late to go into a different more lucrative field. Just remember to be you.
Then I became a Kaiju over night
This was during the 19, I completely changed my career for like the 15 time and now work for a global engineering firm. It’s been a crazy ride, I’m even trying to adopt a son. He’ll be my 6 child, like I said crazy ride!
I’m 38… and a night manager at a grocery store…
Yeah im 33 and lifes is hiting me hard AF. Anime and manga is my escapism. Love tour channel keep it up!
It gets worse once you hit 40...I would KILL to be 33 again!
@@LuigiL75 37 and I figured as much, not looking forward to it, but hey this show is for us, lets see if we can make the most of it and get inspired!
32ers rise up...but not too quickly
Too late, my bad knee is knocking
33, I'll watch you youngsters get up from the lazy boy
I wish more anime had MCs that are 32. I'm not 30 yet but I'm pushing it
Space Brothers, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Monster, Gankutsuou, Mononoke, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex and Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor all have older MC's (20+)
@@Ash_Wen-li all those came out years ago
Yes yes yes. We need more older protags.
@@Ash_Wen-lithey are all Seinen
@@philo2189Fair. I didn't mention Odd Taxi which came out in 2021
3 years ago I was coloring manga pages for the totally legal manga website paying me under the table. I did a few chapters for *Kaiju no 8,* Spy x Family & Tokyo Revengers
Imagine that
@tVt2000 it was fun but the way wasn't what I was promised (totally legit site) so I left but my work is still up there
@@nkanyisoinnocentkhwane3752 have you requested it be taken down?
@tVt2000 I was creatively in a bad spot & coloring comics gave me a release so I'm chilled with them keeping it + it was lockdown so it's not like I was missing out on making real money because I was trapped at home and hadn't found a way to pursue my real passion yet
Great show to watch and what’s great is the English dub comes on the same day
Simuldub for the win
Yes sir! I’m def a dub degenerate, I watch any dub if it’s available. Sorry, I grew up on Toonami.
@@oblivioustouch9012 nothing wrong with that
I mean middle aged men used to be more common in anime and manga overall. Kenshiro was in shonen jump as was Kochi Kame the middle aged cop.
My guy kenshiro is only 25😂. No in anime the trend has always been once youre over 18 you're a middle aged man. And if four 15 you're a grown man
I’m proud to say I read the manga when it first dropped on Jump!
Hitting all the nails on why I enjoyed this series.
.
I've seen it lurking around, and I picked it up cause my curiosity got the best of me, and because the main character was 32 and decides to try again hits me.
.
I'm gonna be in my 30s soon, so we need more series like this where it ain't over till you say it's done, despite your age.
.
.
Check out Space Brothers
I’m 33 and I’ve been having trouble with passing a massage therapy exam. It’s kinda like how the MC of this show can’t pass his exam. So maybe I should watch it?
All I can think of is the RDC lebron skit "Im 36!"
GOATED reference 😂
Lol I remember LeBron met him and told him he saw the skit
@@philo2189 RDC goated man, im 35 and i still think them young dudes really talented.
And the fact that the subs and dubs are coming out on the same day blows my mind! More of that will help new people get into anime. I have always thought that was a no brainer to do.
Happy to see a fellow NHL fan Mike. I always appreciate the NHL apparel you wear in some of the videos. I am going to check out Kaiju No. 8 now as my next one to watch. Man... I am also turning 30 this year. It is hard to not compare to others around you having kids, maybe buying a house, etc. We all have different paths and not all like others. I did extra schooling so I am behind the ball a bit. I have come to terms that my path is different compared to most and I appreciate the discussion on the dirty 30s. Keep up with the awesome content as always!
Oh wow, this hit too hard. I also started reading Kaiju no.8 because of the protagonist being 32, being first 31 and now 32 myself. The stuff about dreams really made me feel sad because I get it. And the thing is, watching him try again even when he is older, to achieve his dream, is inspiring and cathartic to me. Great video :)
tbh this hits so hard being 23 and seeing people younger than you make it big
I'm really glad we're getting more shonen-styled media with older protagonists. I think as the older fans age, demand for it will grow. And it's already started.
you sold me, gonna go watch it right now. thanks man!
still gotta watch ep five but this is great :D
I'm even 38 so I know what it was with 32... Not much different from now except I still dared to dream a little but I have a mass grave of dreams in my garden nowadays (well at least I have a garden still, even though it's mostly grass).
Hey ycan dream of, plants, ther are hard to ruin plants. that survive a lot, and look pretty
@@marocat4749 Grass is pretty much the hardest plant to ruin so dream fulfilled I guess, lol.
Well, not very good earth to be honest and full of rubble that was brought by a drunk farmer years ago unasked, when no one was home (and the broken garden wall) and never restored.
So if I wanted to seriously do something with the garden I would have to dig out like 3-5 meters (9-16 feet) of earth in one half of the garden and cut down a giant tree that was there before I was born on the other half, because it keeps it in shadows. I rather stick to mostly grass. Not worth the hassle or the money and time I would need to spent.
I'm 34 and everything you said about us being that young shonen boy really hit me😭😭😭 but definitely will be watching this anime now, like you said the marketing was mehh on crunchy roll I'm invested now thanks for all your videos you make!
Im so thankful that my own dream is just being an author. Not wven a successful one, but just being able to craft a story brings me so much joy. That whole speech about losing your dreams is something im truly thankful to not have to worry about as a 33 year old man.
Bonsai pop still slaps
it is so good that i started reading manga write after watching episode 3. I couldn't wait for next episode and now i have read all the chapters, i can't wait for next chapter
I like how the exam in Kaiju No. 8 Compares to the exam in Frieren, how they both iterate on the tournament arc, i guess, similar to (but i think better than) MHA's exam arc. in the 3 examples, we get what's explicitally referred to in Frieren as a "bumper crop." This is a great way for the story to tell the audience "there is history to this world, but we're placing you at the most interesting point of his history, because that's what you deserve."
This contrivance is also helpful on an impressionistic level. Emotionally, we typically feel like when we're trying something new, that we're walking into a room full of giants. that may not be the case, not every year can be a bumper crop, but when you don't have that perspective, it can be daunting at any point to try something new, so with this aspect now a mainstay of exam arcs, it synthesizes plot cohesion and emotional resonance. and i think thaaaaat's cool.
note taken for when i release my series. use my most interesting shots for the covers and advertising.
Glad to see you're posting videos!
As a fellow 32 year old. This video really hit hard for me. It's such a strange age to be in life. Thanks for all the excellent content. As always, I appreciate the wisdom you share.
Its been a while since i last watched your channel but im actually kinda glad to see you running an add. Your content is always well thought out and of high quality. I want your career to continue and in order for that to happen, you gotta get that bread man. Keep up the good work.
Just binge watched the first 5 episodes this morning. ITS SO LIT WTF 🔥 Love main protag's crisis with getting back out there despite giving up on his dream for so long. Its relatable plot despite all the crazy kaiju ish ...which is still dope
You're the reason I started reading this manga roughly 4 years ago. So thanks for recing it again for everyone else! Anime has been sick so far. Honju punch was dope. Iykyk
I'm about to turn 30 in a few months and realize I'm the friend everyone else is comparing themselves to, who got to live out their dreams and be successful. But despite how it looks, I know they're better than me in areas too even if they can't see it. I'm stuck in places they aren't. And while I love my life, there's a part of me that knows how fragile it is and who doesn't know where to go from here.
It reminds me of a quote: "If you got everything you wanted, accomplish all your dreams, would you be happy or just find new things to stress about?" Sometimes our brains aren't meant to be happy, but that doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. You're still important to others, leaving a mark, succeeding in some ways even if you don't realize. So don't be too hard on yourself.
As always, love the way you make these connections
I'm really enjoying this series. Glad you covered it!
Bonbon always giving recommendations that sound solid :D
I wasn't originally going to leave a comment since I don't like leaving many, but like...
So I started listening to the video. And I had to stop, because so much of what you were explaining with this anime was hitting hard on a lot of points in my life. I didn't stop because I didn't like what I heard. I stopped to go invest some time in the anime, at least up to what's on Crunchyroll. And then, I came back to finish the video and will probably start buying the manga too.
It's not often that I find a main character that is "relatable" in ways that resonate with me, especially in something that's supposed to be a shounen. While I haven't given up on my dreams, I'm at that point where it feels like I'm surrounded by other people passing me up, doing what I'm trying to do (in my case, be a novelist), and seething in the fact that most of my 30's still consist of me being confined to a cubicle hell. So watching this, and then coming back to hear the analysis...it hit pretty hard. And I honestly found myself verbally rooting for Kafka while watching because it felt like I was cheering on myself too.
I know I'm kinda just commenting into the wind. But I probably wouldn't have given this series a shot if I haven't watched this video. And I think I needed that, even if it helped just a little.
Excellent summary, that's exactly why I continue to read the manga - one of the few I keep up with. Thanks.
Two other channels have recommended Kaiju No 8 and i went mehhh. But only you made it hit home for people like myself having a midlife crisis right now.... Thank you. I'm now reading the manga as I can't wait for the anime to catch-up..
Great break down! Thank you for posting the video. We do need more Manga-Fiction that are based on this age group! I really enjoy both the Anime & Manga.
lol, i sometimes forget what year it is too my dude. cheers to another post and i hope this video unleashes the floodgates on this show getting noticed by the masses/general audiences.
Good vid. You’re very wise. I feel like I’ve learned a lot from watching ur work. Especially this one
Great video, really hope this show gets the love it deserves
I'm back. Just blazed through all 5 eps that're available 'cause the show is really fun. Thanks for the recommendation!
Thank you for talking about this show!!!!
Absolutely sounds like my kind of jam. Thanks for this!
Always chase your dreams! I’m 35 and just hit my dream job. Took me longer than I thought. But glad I’m here.
I'm 35 and you nailed it...
This anime does indeed hit different.
You sold me on this story withing 3 minutes. Anime and manga
This channel persists to be the equivalent of screaming from the mountain tops: "this is the good shhhh*+"! Finally, thx y'all for shining light on Kaiju No. 8
Y'all, I started reading this manga a few yrs back and felt SO SEEN & UNDERSTOOD. I took it upon myself to chase a dream of being able to communicate in Japanese & yeah, I'm back in school, Japan edition. Hoping I can live out a dream but also dreams change . . Still ya gotta dare to . .
I'm 33, and I'm listening. Lol
This was just an outright amazing video. Way to hit me with a message right when it matters! Keep up the amazing work boys! I will try and get you back for it when things turn around. Here comes 40 in no time!
I love you Bonsai Pop ❤❤ You help ,y mental health so much seriously ❤
I mean I’m 33 and I’ve been seeing this anime around, you’ve sold me on it! I’ll be checking this anime out! 😂😂 We’re all just out here trying to get by 😌 I needed this video, thank you for this
Sounds like a great premise. Definitely gonna check it out now.
I've thought about getting into this one, but this video has me sold on it.
Compirson? Anyone else notice that in the monster/Godzilla disclaimer?
Great video as always, Mike!
I don't know if I can get behind Mitch McConnell being a monster because he would be that one Kaiju that would foam at the mouth then fall down face first and seize into the ground the first time the camera's come on. Kinda feel bad for the Kaiju cleaners in that scenario 😂.
Seriously though loving the anime glad to see you covering it.
I never heard of or seen anything related to Kaiju No. 8 until about a year ago. I was skimming the books over at Walmart of all places and saw the cover of one of the volumes and was instantly drawn to it. After that day, I've been a huge fan!
Let me guess: "It's nothing we have seen before."
I'm worried about y'all. I'm 44 now, and yeah, my body doesn't work as well as it used, but it's still POSSIBLE that the best version of me is in my future. We aren't REALLY competing against one another out here - we're just striving to be our own best. Sometimes, the only way to measure that is against someone else, but most of us aren't there.
If you're feeling this at 30! This doesn't get easier, but you can find peace with it. I've known moments of said peace. Still a struggle.
and yiou can jusbe a chill cool side character thats living his life.
I really appreciate it when anime focuses on an older demo, and was really happy when I first heard about Kaiju No.8 and Kafka. I hope this does really well and gets more seasons, unlike all the rom-coms that focus on adults that get one season and then radio silence
Still a big fan of your videos!! Love them!
Bass is indeed the best instrument. Great video bois
Haha I once dreamed about being a pro StarCraft player, but now I'm 32
I just wanted to point out that this show has easily won the seasonal award for both Best ED and Best OP imho
Great video dude.
Great video, im gonna watch it
Was that a "Sing Yesterday For Me" reference? You have my full attention.
Compirson? Anyone else notice that in the monster/Godzilla disclaimer?
Great video as always!
I'm 31 and when i was younger my dream was to be vagabond roaming with my dog, kinda like alot if the anime I've watched. Now i just wanna pay off my mortgage sell my house and start a homestead, literally the opposite.
"You're a night manager in a local grocery store, IF YOU ARE LUCKY"
Would be more appropriate. I don't know about you guys but I'm holding for dear life on my job because my wife didn't managed to get a new one after being fired during the global panini...
I love when anime focuses on adults for a change! I’ll have to check this one out ❤
This kind of plays into some of what you discussed with JJK and Gege Akutami being “our” age. Naoya Matsumoto is around 42 according to google. Something has happened, adults are still watching anime seems like a market is opening for more mature perspectives that aren’t as depressing as most seinen lol
14:05 finally someone I can relate to
well, now I'm super excited to see it, too.
alright, sold. I'm watching this series ASAP. You can tell that to the show runners. "Bonsai pop made me watch Kaiju No.8" Keep up the great videos my dudes.
been debating watching this one and have been looking for a new one to watch. (just finished Grimgar of Fantasy And Ash which I really enjoyed). so I guess with your endorsement I shall.
This manga slaps. Love the suits and character design. It’s fun as hell
Looks interesting can’t wait to see it

I felt exactly what you described , it looked like a whatever anime based off first glance but I’m so glad my gf convinced me to watch it, such an awesome show
Looks great! But your pitch has convinced me to hold off until at least my late 20s.
New sub here you had me sold at the bass line actually I was in before that but still # best instrument gang
That hotline miami soundtrack outta nowhere was great
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SHOW AND BECAME MY FAVOURITE MANGA OF ALL TIME
One thing i love about this anime, and im not sure if this was the aim with it, but its the fact that Kafka didn't have to have some inner fight to control the Kaiju. It feels right that theres no mental struggle for power. When we see Naruto or Asta fighting for power it makes sense cause their kids so they barely got control over their own emotions. But with Kafka it feels like hes an actual mature adult that yeah he has insecurities and struggles at first to find the courage to go for his dream. But hes not a teenager with hormones and a bunch of testosterone that he cant control. Again, maybe im reading too deep into it. But it feels like as a 32 year old, its appropriate that he immediately has control over it and only loses (MINOR SPOILER) it when he gets pushed to the brink by the captain
Love this show and the music is fire
Dude, I saw the Bruins swag and was like "Nah, get outta here." (Lightning fan here) But your breakdown of what makes this show work was perfect. Kafka is one of the better characters I've seen in a long while.
I'm up to date on the manga, it hasn't been my main focus or favorite story or anything; but it really doesn't feel like they've done anything with his age. He's just a main character, who's main goal is becoming strong and falling in love. He's never wiser, more thoughtful, pulling from experience (eh a little) etc.
He looks like Owen Wilson but unemployed
