Plugged everything in and within 10 minutes the dish had finished it’s needed tasks and I was connected! Oh happy days. I disconnected my intermittent service with T-mobile. Since you use the adapter to connect your own router, the "bad Ethernet connection" may also be in that short extra cable, or more likely, any of the connectors between the dish and the power brick. If there is an issue with the connector on the dish or router side, for example simply some dirt, replacing the cable may not help a lot. If you ever have the issue again, you could try to unplug/plug all connectors a few times to try and clean them, or try it without the extra adapter. Cables almost never fail in the middle, especially if there is no sign of damage, it's always the connection between the cable and the connector, or the connectors itself. An alternative cause could be the Starlink power adapter: It puts the power over the same wires as the Ethernet data (as an extra DC offset) and if the power adapter has too much noise in the added DC offset, it may affect the data quality. Unfortunately there is no easy way to test this. I have an older "round" Starlink dish, where the cable is not replaceable, and have not had any issues.

Mine has been occasionally affected by a hard rain where I lose connectivity for 10-15 minutes. I have heard of other people who keep their Starlink dish on the ground and don't have much for issues with bad weather.
The reason for the failing cable is most likely corrosion in the dishy end of the cable. In Norway, several have stopped working, and it might be a combination of moisture and the heat function drawing higher currents. I would try using acid-free vaseline on the contact surface and silicone to block water ingress to the connector.

This is funny to watch because the cable issue could have been all avoided by running the cable in outdoor conduit.... Boom Problem solved. The cable is outdoor rated but people really don't understand how much the outdoor elements affect any outside cable that are not ran in conduit.
Since there was no damage to the outside of the cable the issue was most likely in or near the connectors and a conduit would not have made a difference. I ran most of my cable indoors and use a black flexible plastic conduit for the last outside part to give it a bit extra UV protection in case the rest of the system keeps working for 30 years. This is not an issue in the video, the cable looks brand new on the outside.

If you have access to cable, fiber or 5G internet, you will be better served by using one of those rather than Starlink. Starlink is expensive and not nearly as fast as terrestrial options.
The dish itself rarely moves position, usually just when it's searching for a signal which that only happens if you move the dish or it's been turned off for awhile. In both those scenarios you'll be without internet until it gets into its final position.

Super helpful video. Thank you! Two questions please: 1) I have a workshop approx 30 yards from my house. What are the chances a rooftop unit on the house would also provide service at the shop? 2) What is a mesh unit and in what scenario would I need one? (Basic boring work stuff here with some streaming - no gaming needed). Thank you
For question one, I don't think you'd receive a good wifi signal to your workshop with it being that far away from the house. It will really depend on where you have the router though that will determine how far your WIFI signal will reach. I had my Starlink router in my basement and would lose wifi connection going upstairs. For question two, a mesh network is basically having multiple routers in your house that create a single network so you don't lose WIFI connectivity no matter where you are in your house. A mesh network might help you get a WIFI signal to your workshop. I have a neighbor with a similar setup to yours, they use a mesh network and are able to get Wifi to their workshop. They have a router in the center of the house, one in the garage and then a router in their workshop. The router in the workshop receives an internet connection from the garage router and the garage router receives an internet connection from the router in the house. Hopefully this helps!
@@valeriemccartney5039 You should get the ethernet adapter. Then you can add a better wireless access point facing the workshop, or you can run a cable or fiber all the way to the workshop and attach a wifi unit there.
You can cut the proprietary cable ends off and use a standard Cat 6 ethernet cable in a pinch, assuming the cable is defective and not the ends nor terms to ends.
@@PeterLawton That is what was said when Starlink was first spoken of. We all thought, Good man, he's a multi billionair and he is giving back to the people. Should have known better huh!
@@stoptheirlies Yes, definitely should have known better. Gossip may have said Starlink would be free, but Musk sure did not. A business that consistently takes losses will see their bank balance drop to zero and then employees' paychecks bounce. In practice, no business breaks even consistently -- too many variables. Only a business with a consistent profit can consistently meet payroll. I'm a fan of profit. It need not be huge or excessive. It must exist and is certainly no evil, as some would describe it. So if Starlink were to be free, money must come from somewhere else, to pay employees there. No one works for free, and never should. Until I hear where that payroll money would come from, I will not believe any gossip that says Starlink will be free.
Between $90 and $120, depending upon where you live. Crappy business model to make the same service more expensive in one spot and less in another. Their customer service is virtually non-existent and the hardware is expensive. It is pretty typical of a company staffed by 99% techies. You get great technology solutions, but they have no clue about how to carry out business or deal with customers. Sadly, in rural areas (like where I live), they are the only workable game in town. SpaceX needs to understand that if they continue to do business so poorly, folks will jump ship as soon as any other viable option presents itself.

The answer is: Yes, because Hughes, tho' a storied name, was really lame. I felt lucky to get SL in ~5mos. and have had over a full year of it. But, it's gone downhill. We in the East were pointed N ..with some obstructions for me. Then I gather they had a little too much business and pointed us East - out over the Atlantic. Having built a new roof mount specifically for the East 6 mos. ago (also with 'some obstructions) I am sad to report that my outage times have nearly doubled within the last month. Luckily, our Rural Electric Co. seems to have funds to run cable in our direction and have started construction. As brilliant as Musk may be ..allowing his 11-year-old petulant self to be in public is a full-on turn-off. I will not knowingly give money to an A-hole. Jim
I have what some people (especially Musk worshippers) may consider a crazy idea, but I would wager that this fits the facts. Basically, I think Starlink and other low-Earth-orbit (LOE) satellite broadband services are going to eventually fail. I would not have ventured this projection until this past weekend. That is when my 15-day trial of T-Mobile 5G home internet was done. I was cautious because I live in a high-rise and it is conceivable that signal could be weak, if my exposure to the tower is obstructed. (I live on a middle floor of a 13 story building.) Long story, short: T-Mobile 5G absolutely slays my VerizonFiOS 100/100 broadband service. I get only 4 bars of a 5 bar reception scale and I immediately got download speeds of between 300 and 430 Mbps! Upload was reliably 90-160 Mbps. Anyone who knows the specs between the two technologies understands that LOE simply can't come close to matching 5G, in terms of possible performance. However, this isn't the reason I think Starlink will fail. For me, it comes down to network construction, maintenance, and operational costs. Having a network of 40,000 satellites is EXPENSIVE. Even at scale, launches are costly and risky. The equipment has to operate around the clock in the inhospitable isolation of space. When a satellite fails, it's load needs to be re-tasked to other birds or it needs to be replaced with other satellites. Grounds operations are expensive and never-ending. As the system ages, it becomes more failure-prone. This is just the nature of all electronic systems. Compare this to Earth-bound 5G networks. Towers are relatively inexpensive and they can be targeted to specific areas of coverage. The electronics are less expensive and easily accessible for maintenance and repair. Ground operations are also much cheaper because there isn't the element of rocket delivery or orbital management. 5G is less susceptible to weather and it can be engineered to overcome terrestrial interference. Beyond this, a 5G network has more than one revenue stream. It is primarily a mobile phone network, secondarily a mobile hotspot network, and additionally a broadband network. On top of that, towers can be rented out for space to other communications providers. The return on investment is greater and the costs are lower. This is why satellite broadband just can't compete. I realize that this would seem like an amateur opinion to many...and perhaps it is. But, it is based on some very fundamental economic realities. I'm curious to see how others comment to this idea.
I agree with you. The cost of Starlink is too high. Even if there are many satellites in the future, it will be difficult to compete with 5G in providing mobile networks, at least in the next five years. But it is true that it provides a good service to those few people in remote areas.
@@Zhuxingyi No doubt...and there are some things that low Earth orbit satellite broadband can do that nothing else can. Providing internet access on the high seas, in remote regions, and in moving vehicles definitely has market potential. The problem is that I doubt there will be enough of these customers to support Musk's service, let alone that of Bezos and the other groups entering the LOE broadband market.
I don’t disagree with your point. But I do think you’re missing a major point. Starlink isn’t meant to be a major ISP. It’s a temporary solution to a major problem. Many, many people have no other option or they only have one very bad option. I was in the latter camp. I preordered Starlink in Feb. 2021 and I just got it. I’ve been using it for 1 day. While I was waiting I kept checking for T-Mobile, but they don’t offer Home internet where I live. If I could’ve gotten it I would have. I’d have loved to not have had to get Starlink. But my previous ISP was my only option and it was bad. I got 18Mbps on a very, very good day and I can count the number of times I got one of those days on one hand. They’ve been my ISP since 2009. When I first got them I didn’t even get 1Mbps down. It’s 2023 and they can only provide 25Mbps down after they upgraded their equipment. Yesterday, prior to my Starlink installation, I did a final speed test and got 5Mbps down at 7am. Now that was lower than what I normally get. My normal is 10-12Mbps. I have the 25Mbps down tier and it costs $104 a month. If my Fixed Wireless ISP were better I’d have stuck with them. If our infrastructure was better Starlink wouldn’t be needed at all in the USA. When T-Mobile finally gets home internet here I’ll drop Starlink so I’m not taking a spot that someone else needs.
Problem with 4g/5g internet is usually really congested, its usually fine when theres new upgrade on BTS/new tech introduced until theres more users. Plus that generally not the point of sat internet, its mean as a solution when theres no other choice.
Take this from a guy who has replaced several roofs its never a good idea to bolt anything to your roof every single one ive done that had satellite dishes bolted to them has been rotten in that area
I’m on my 2nd day of a new mobile unit. It was great the first day, 2nd day it needed 4 cold reboots to work; connection issues thru 1 USB!? That took nearly 3 hrs. Then it auto-positioned in under 20 minutes. Ordering online and two customer service contacts indicate an incompetent company; thinking of returning it. I’m shocked. This is a Musk company!? Don’t get fooled by the glamour. So far its been a second-rate experience. Regardless what the speed test indicates it is in fact not that fast at all. It’s a very disappointing experience.
The "router" is just a power supply. You can cut the cable, connect a standard Ethernet connector and use an alternative PoE adapter. (some campers do this to turn Starlink into a 12V system) The dish can use a lot of power, especially in snow, so check the spec for the correct PoE adapter.

I swear that when Starlink was first spoken off it was to be free for everyone
Nope. That's not financially sustainable.
How much does it cost in a month
Between $90 and $120, depending upon where you live. Crappy business model to make the same service more expensive in one spot and less in another. Their customer service is virtually non-existent and the hardware is expensive. It is pretty typical of a company staffed by 99% techies. You get great technology solutions, but they have no clue about how to carry out business or deal with customers.
Sadly, in rural areas (like where I live), they are the only workable game in town. SpaceX needs to understand that if they continue to do business so poorly, folks will jump ship as soon as any other viable option presents itself.
What is the cost to get this
$599 for hardware and $120/month.
Quite expensive for me
Is starlink available in NY?
Hi Joe, according to Starlink's website it is available in New York.
English its a second language for me you talking to Fast But a got it most of it..... did you say NOW in June 2024 its going to BE 49 euros a Month PLUS 349. for the STUFF. OK Thank you very much,,,in July 2024. going to get mine....T Y for your help.... LOL
how much you pay in a month??
$120/month.
@@aboveaveragejoereviews thank you sir
Keep in mind starlink is not available everywhere. Check their map
how can cable even fail and so fast, so bizarre
Aint this Elon musk's internet? Think about his cars
The title to this video is deceptive because it only discusses Starlink and does not mention the other providers such as ViaSat or HughesNet.
Thanks for the feedback George, I could've discussed other choices more. Viasat and HughesNet are mentioned @ 4:38, but good to know.
I have had both. Starlink is better than both, faster and no data caps.
Ripoff $120 a month ! $600 for equipment RIPOFF!
Starlink! As long as your independently wealthy!
It is too expensive i had a very good internet connection and it was only 5$/month
The Starlink Internet 🛜 is so freaking cool
There's a spy camera and a spy microphone hidden in the router, I swear.
Can you prove it ?

But .. i can't post video in comment for prove !!

The "router" is just a power supply. You can cut the cable, connect a standard Ethernet connector and use an alternative PoE adapter. (some campers do this to turn Starlink into a 12V system) The dish can use a lot of power, especially in snow, so check the spec for the correct PoE adapter.
My starlink keeps saying it's obstructed but there is nothing around lol even did it in a soccer oval with no trees nothing it still says mite need to find somewhere else haha 😆 I can't win with it
Sounds like trash
