    Thanks Wes! I have 4 acres of sunflowers. Nuseed super early maturing. Using Authority Elite pre emerge. If you're ever in Mo during dove season, give me a shout.

      That sounds great! Yes sir I’ve used authority elite many times it is a very good pre emerge! Good luck on the food plot!

    Thanks for the info! Where I'm planning to do a field, it's mostly grass and goat weed. Dove love to eat the goat weed seeds! As long as the sunflowers get a head start, they should grow great and might have some goat weed mixed in.

      Yes sunflowers are great at competing with other plants, like you said give them a head start and they will typically outgrow most of the competition. Good luck with the plots and thanks for watching

    Wes....thanks for sharing the info on sunflowers, I may have missed it but what is your seeding rate per acre? Thanks, Bob

    • @DIYfoodplotpro
      @DIYfoodplotpro  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We have traditionally broadcast planted them at 20-25LBS per acre….most online resources say 3-6 LBS. thanks for watching

    So I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around pre-emergents. Like Dual Magnum (metolachlor) is a broadleaf and grass herbicide. Why does it not kill the sunflowers when they germinate? This year is my first time trying sunflowers in my dove field. I'm only planting a one acre area for my first run at it. I bought a Covington one row planter, 5 pounds of Clearfield Sunflower seeds (used about 3 pounds), five hundred in pre-emergents (used only 75 bucks worth), two hundred in post-emergents (will use about 46 bucks worth) and about five hundred in electric fence supplies. Needless to say I am a nervous wreck. I planted on 5/1 and I'm in the process of putting up the 3D fence now. I have all of this documented on my youtube page, but my fear is what if my planter went too deep and the seeds will not make or if the deer and rabbits get to the plants once they do come up. Maybe a drought hits and they all die. Perhaps I should have tried a fifty pound bag of bird seed, but I'm constantly fighting crab grass in my field so I wasn't sure how to go about dealing with that. Hopefully watching your videos will help as I'm always researching and looking to try new things. (sorry for the long post)

      Great question, so something like dual magnum while it will prevent mostly grasses and some broadleaves, isn’t going to get them all. When it’s on the label, it means that seed/plant is susceptible to that pre emergent. Have you checked the field lately? I would expect them to be up by now. Good luck with the plots.

      @@DIYfoodplotpro I put out an up date after eleven days and over 3 inches of rain. some were up but not all. I'm heading out there now to finish my 3D fence and start disking and planting another acre with dove proso millet. Last planting in June will be brown top millet. A lot of work to try and have a decent dove shoot.

      Yes sir, it’s amazing how much time effort and money go into a food plot! Good luck with the plots, hope they turn out well!

    Hey Wes. My question would be what's the difference in the size of heads on the Clearfield compared to black oil? Size of seeds and heads means more meat for the birds. Thanks

    • @DIYfoodplotpro
      @DIYfoodplotpro  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Chirs that’s a great question, and I can’t answer as I’ve never raised clear fields. I will say last year where the population was thinner the black oil heads were huge, were the population was thicker they were smaller but way more of them.

    Hey Wes, in your friend's field last year how did they prepare the field closer to the dove season? Did he cut the field to drop more seed on the ground or even clear cut the field? With that density of sunflowers were you able to find your birds easily?

    • @DIYfoodplotpro
      @DIYfoodplotpro  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Keith that’s a great question, I hope to bring all that to y’all this fall. He likes to bushhogs lanes really low to the ground a couple week before season, and I believe he also plants wheat out there. Thanks for watching!

    Good morning Wess , do you ever mix in Lab Lab with the corn when you plant? It makes for a thick food plot and sometimes the deer will bed in it. The deer love it !👍🏼

    • @DIYfoodplotpro
      @DIYfoodplotpro  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Morning sir, I’ve not mixed lab-lab and corn together in a plot. Traditionally I’ve tried to stay away from mixes as I like to be able to spray to control the weeds. Thanks for watching and sharing that great information

    • @loyalsoldier3997
      @loyalsoldier3997 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@DIYfoodplotpro yes sir, I too stay away from mixes in general. But if you ever get a chance to try lab lab (it's a Vining pea) mixed with corn, I use a 50-50 mix. I highly recommend it on smaller corn fields/plots 5 acres or less. Usually about 2-3 acres work best. If you do it right your corn patch will look like a cudzoo patch! You'll produce cover, bedding, and food, all in that 1 small plot. Hunting will be off the chain, and you will be able to hold dear close to that area all summer. Sorry, I know your channel is geared towards dove hunting, but this makes one killer dear plot.🤝🏼👍🏼

      Sounds great! I may give that a go! I’ve planted both plots, and really like both, I’ve just not planted them together

    If you can keep the weed pressure down the first 45 days on any crop near about got it whipped. I spray prowl and round up behind planter. Planting on 38in rows. 20,000 population does well for us

    • @DIYfoodplotpro
      @DIYfoodplotpro  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks I would completely agree, if you can get them to canopy you got it made it the shade! I’ve used prowl a good bit….like the product hate the yellow that stains every piece of clothing. Haha. I actually just got my dove field planted today, sprayed right after planting with dual magnum and roundup

      I like 20,000 also.
      Wish I could send a photo of my planter. Pre emerge kit and tank all on the 4 row bar.
      Simple rig with 12v pump.
      Same plates are used for popcorn, Deere 1700

      Phil that sounds like a perfect setup for sunflowers, many years ago we used to run a planter with a sprayer mounted on it, makes if much more time efficient. Thanks for watching!

      I got a ford 309 in the works for this exact set up. Gonna mount a drum with DC pump to run a nozzle at the rear.

    1/2lb of Cotoran on top of A full rate of Zidua and Sufentrazone is the Cadillac pre.

      Use Roundup plus Zidua and Sharpen under lay-by hoods for season long control, at approximately knee height.

    The last few bags of $20 Black Oil Sunflower BIRD seed I planted only came up very sparse. What's Professor Plots thinking on taking chances on the "germ" of this kind of seed? Also the darn deer eat my sunflower sprouts like deer salad. Just about given up on planting them unless you can demonstrate how to have real success!!.

    • @DIYfoodplotpro
      @DIYfoodplotpro  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’m willing to take the risk on sunflowers, I am planting at a higher rate than recommended, so if some don’t come up, no big deal. We planted this brand last year and had good luck with it, but i definitely realize it could be very minimal stand this year. Thanks for watching

      I buy mine from my seed dealer and they all come up great but the problem is there not roundup ready. Welter seed and honey Co. I don't know if they ship
