Thanks so much for this! I have tried this so many different ways, but yours is the most simple and straightforward explanation I've seen. I hope you are going to follow up with the pass through internet soon! I'm currently developing my network configuration for our VW van and plan to move it to our sailboat in another year. I want a device that connects to wireless networks and shares the internet, as well as a file server, with my other devices. I like the way you explain why you do certain steps and don't just copy paste. I'm going to be travelling abroad and need to know how to troubleshoot my own network problems. Thanks again! This was super helpful!

      Hi S/V Divergent!
Is just wanted to let you know that I did the Internet pass through. I needed this anyway and this is quite quickly done and much easier as the access point configuration itself. It takes 2min to enable the necessary options.
But: You need the Internet source, of course. E.g. a LAN access or LTE modem etc.!
The video is not uploaded yet but I think it will be ready tomorrow or the day after.

Congratulations Sir Real, you do a great job. Following you I managed to setup my headless AIS receiver, and shared my experience mentioning you. But I'd like to know:
    1. how to setup a SIM module (SIM800 or SIM900) or GSM dongle, and
    2. may I also use an USB GPS connected to the Raspberry, so I can broadcast tru the wifi to the mobile devices the internet, the AIS and the GPS signals ?

      Hi Antonio,
Thanks for your comment and sorry for the late reply. I am currently not working on my raspberry projects due to a lack of time.
I didn't setup a sim module yet, but it would be a great extension for my tutorials, though. Maybe if I find time I will follow it up.
Of course you can connect a USB GPS. I did this in some tutorials. And of course there a several ways to forward this information via the Internet, keeping in mind to protect your data. But this is nothing to answer in a comment box.

Thank you for your clear explanation of all the steps to be taken. AIS_TEST is now available but cannot get an ip address, so I cannot connect wirelessly. I did give it a static ip address according to your instructions. What am I doing wrong? Thank for your answer.

Unfortunately I can't offer remote-service due to a lack of time. I share my solutions, sometimes the OS has changed or newer versions of other software parts are available. Sometimes some wiring errors did occur or a simple programming mistake. For me it is impossible to support the community directly additional to creating videos.
But I recommend to ask your question (and if need be paste your porgraming code) in Rasbian/Node-RED forums.

I followed all your steps, but now I am not receiving NMEA signals anymore. I can find the Pi as an access point. Please offer a solution. Thank you

Hi SirReal, sorry to bother you. but in your video nr. 3 I have got the same error you created about the Locale (language setting). At 11m:58s of your video you enter the raspi-conf and you want to change the wiFi Country set. But you get the same error I have got "could not communicate to wpa_supplicant". In the following screen, you managed to solve it magically ... how did you do it? I got stuck here. THanks.

I got this error because I didn't change it, I did this before. I just wanted to show how to find the option.
The problem is, that the system will not run if no WiFi Country is set. It needs a country to proof that the selected options are valid.

Openplotter has easy GUI to set up Access Point

Yes, however, if you want to run a lean and slim NMEA Multiplexer, w/o a graphical desktop environment, this way might be helpful.
