Awesome Jodi... Been to the BWCAW many times. One thing I have learned is we’re at nature’s mercy. Rain, wind, hot, cold, or drone in trees, it’s all part of the adventure and the challenge. There always seem to be something unique about every journey.
My husband and I did a BWCA trip from the Ham Lake entry point to Long Island Lake twice, once in 2010 and once in 2018. We day tripped all over Long Island Lake and the Frost river system. Absolutely stunning area and one of my favorite trips of the ten we have done. Our second favorite was East Bearskin to Canoe Lake. Hats off to you for doing a solo! Honestly if my husband hadn't dragged me into the BWCA I would likely have never done it otherwise. I don't think I could ever solo it by canoe but for sure I would do it by overnight hike if I didn't have these stupid shin splints lol.
Hey Jodi, beautiful footage, been going to ham lake for 40+ years, we were the campers at the point during your trip, sorry we couldn't help get you drone, RIP to your drone, maybe see you again up there, be well. nice video.
@@jodimiddendorf Traded my lake kayak for a Pyranha, started doing some light river running then found some people that I could shadow and learn from on the big stuff. Definitely go to a pool and learn to flip, most big pools do stuff like that once a week or so. It's so much easier when you can see underwater.
Super cool video! That was the weather when John took me into the BWCA in May 2 years ago, except more rain 😅 I wish I would have had a snow suit cause I can’t handle the cold at all!
Olivia Lamont thanks! that’s an awful first boundary waters experience. Especially if not prepared.😕 Mid-August is much nicer. Warm and fairly dry. We should plan a short trip sometime when it’s hot and dry!
Hi Jodi. I’m a new subscriber, a drone pilot and love the BWCA. Your drone vs. tree experience brought back the memory of my own drone (DJI Mavic Pro) crashing into a tree. The crash itself didn’t damage the drone. Unfortunately, it was higher in the tree than I could reach and was damaged only when it fell to the ground while trying to grab it with a long pole. DJI repaired it (I snapped the camera off the gimbal mount) for $160, which I thought was reasonable. It looks like you either got a new one or had yours repaired, so I’m glad to see the you’re back flying again. I really enjoy how you edit interest into the videos you post. Keep up the great work and safe flying.
Thank you! I appreciate that! I bought a new one because winter was quickly approaching and wanted to get a ton more footage before that. I didn’t want to wait for repair. I will get my broken one repaired if possible though
That's some gorgeous scenery. Friends of mine just bought a house in Duluth and Superior looks like it's worth a visit. Do you do any astrophotography? I'm jealous of the light pollution levels, so much better than any sites I've researched at home in Missouri.
I have heard lots of wolves howling. I have yet to see one in the wild aside from driving down the road and seeing one run across the road far ahead of me. They really are beautiful.
Thank You! It was such a pretty sunset! I wasn’t doing an orbit, I was just free flying it. Usually the sensor will tell you before you get near enough to hit something, I think I was honestly flying it too fast for the sensor to react in time. I did get a new one though!
Yes, It was sad. I am happy I was able to retrieve it though. I was worried about the plastic being in the tree and potentially ending up in the lake. Very happy my friend was able to help me get it! I was able to acquire a new drone and will keep the videos coming!
Awesome footage. Our friends got a stern warning about no drones in BWCA. I guess it's something you can get a fine over (I see you are following rules and not in BWCA :) ) I had no idea.
Yes! This is true. National wilderness areas and National Parks have strict rules about Drone use. I specifically camped outside of the BWCA in this video so that I could get drone footage and follow the rules. I was pretty worried when I crashed my drone in the tree and could not retrieve it myself. I take the "Leave no Trace" rule very seriously whether in the BWCA or not. Thankfully I was able to find someone relatively quickly who could get the drone out of the tree for me. I definitely learned from this experience.
I just started watching your video. You get an A+ for wearing the life jack. And a B- for using a canoe paddle rather than a kayak paddle. You will easily gain 1 mph. And no energy wasting J stroke. If you plan to do this the rest of your life. Get yourself a 17t kevlar solo canoe. Probably 20 pounds lighter than your current canoe. Maybe get a wenonah minn 2. And get a center seat/ portage yolk Start calling outfitters for used canoes. Even beat up canoes will last 20 years. Kevlar canoes are quieter , less hot and cut through the water much better
Haha I have heard lots of people prefer the kayak paddle. I really like my canoe paddles though. Definitely a bit of energy waste with the J stroke, but I find the art fun. At least for the first few hours of paddling. ha. I would love a solo canoe, if I could afford the space to store two canoes. My personal canoe right now is a 17 foot Wenonah 2 person canoe and it can be tough to maneuver alone. The wind really catches it. Thanks for the comment!
@@jodimiddendorf I have soloed my 20ft Wenona Minn3 four times in the bewca. The very first trip I used the kayak paddle for the first two hours. Then switched to my light weight composite canoe paddle.. After about 30 seconds I returned to the kayak paddle and never looked back. You will gain a mile per hour. Same with a tandem trip. There are solo drop in seats seats for you tandem canoe. My minn3 has a middle seat that is perfectly placed. I always bring a 5 gallon bucket that I can fill with water to keep the nose from getting caught by the wind
Canoe paddle ALL THE WAY when tripping. While going straight is perhaps easier with a kayak paddle, canoe paddles allow more maneuvering. They are also much lighter, which means less stress and fatigue both paddling and portaging. A primary and backup canoe paddle together weigh less than a single kayak paddle...
5:00 that rock setting just makes me want to take out my brushes ... was wondering about the laws of droning in National forests in that area ? ... and then i got the answer from that Bret311 comment !!! ... shameful sometimes how they deny us the right to shoot scenes in some of the most naturally abundant sites in the country of " We the people " who pay taxes to maintain these forests... . but so be the land of the free i guess...
Staying up to date on drone law is part of the gig. The laws are nuanced as heck! haha but I am alright with it. I love the shots I can get from my drone.
That is not cold in the least...leave the drone home, ditch the watch, and get a simple solo canoe. Oh yeah, stick the cell phone where the sun doesn't shine..... expect rain. But I give her credit for going on an quick solo trip in.....
@@jodimiddendorf I've canoed more than you'd believe. Not just the BWCA, but the entire Mississippi, the Churchill, the Nahoni, and many more, including up to Hudsons Bay. I have planned and exicuted more canoe trips than most will ever have a wet dream about.....I said what I said for a reason. BTW, I live next to the BWCA. SO YEAH...I plan my own trips.
I believe you. I’m not saying you didn’t make good points. I just mean, I do my thing you do yours. I don’t bring my drone to BWCA. This was just an after work quick camp one day when I had nothing else going on. I don’t own a solo canoe so I work with what I got. I started with almost no gear and slowly built my gear setup. Worked for me 🤷♀️
such a beautiful area. I will be going this summer for my first time to the BWCA. Life long Minnesotan, first time there...
I spent my childhood on the gunflint trail. Great video!!!
Thank you!
I remember my 30 years of trips by the best fishing and the worst weather.
You will remember this trip with a smile by the cold and stuck drone :)
No doubt!

great view😍😍😍, very high quality video. I like your channel😎👍
Thank you! I am happy that you enjoy my videos!
Used to put in off Hovland East Pine Site.
Did gunflint back in 08 with scouts , I wanna go back, I do white water kayaks in CO and a lot of fishing in Missouri.
I have never done white water! So cool. How did you get into that?

Definitely worth a visit! Northern MN is absolutely gorgeous. I'm biased, of course. The farther north you go, the less light pollution.
Do you ever see any wolves? They are so beautiful!

Drinking game: take a shot every time Jodi says “Rain”. 😂 great video and a great man climbing that tree for you! 😁

I don't normally like peoples music mix, yours is really good, i am from Ely love this area. Your good at this.
Thank you! I really appreciate your feedback. I’m trying to get better every single day.
My drone rescue out of a big black ash for my kid in the Superior National Forest was alot sketchier than that. Cool vids by the way!
Thank you!
Great video, really enjoyed it! Beautiful area. Too bad the drone was badly damaged despite the cool retrieval.
It was a bummer. Thankfully I was able to replace it quickly. I bought drone insurance this time too!
Your drone footage was awesome. Were you doing an "orbit" when you crashed? I hope you get a replacement and get back in the air soon.

How good does it feel to finally get to the end of a hard portage!
It is a great feeling for sure!
That stinks you lost the drone but at least you follow LNT

Haha he has a way with ropes and trees!
nice job !
Thank you!
What camera did you use? Very nice video. I have been to the BWCA 14 times. Safe Travels.
I have a Nikon Z6 and iPhone 11, both were used in this video!
I grew up in southern Minnesota. Why does northern Minnesota get all the cool stuff?
Same! So I moved here!
Is Ham Lake in a PMA?
Nope. Ham Lake is not in the BWCA, but is a lake you pass through to get into the BWCA. It is well maintained (in my opinion).

Stay away from moving water under the ice. And schooling fish and natural springs can thin the ice
