Hey Jeb, usually when there is bad weather off the coast of SAN and/or LAX, we route the planes to a more northerly route and then out to the islands when we reach SFO. Same goes for SEA/PDX routes. If there’s bad weather to the north, we go south and then west to the islands. i’m a flight attendant for Hawaiian. I mainly do LAS. i’ve seen us routed south the SAN and then west to the islands. Also, north to SFO and then out west to the islands. There’s highways in the sky that are used called Tracks. “A” track is up north and “F” track south of San Diego. “C” track is by SFO. Usually, LAX uses the “D” track. Because of bad weather, we’ll find a track with better weather. I guess it makes it easier to find a plane in the event of an unexpected emergency.
Aloha Robert - Although I do not know you personally, I want to thank you and HA Flight Crews for taking care of our family's needs on flights to HON and OGG from LAX, Long Beach, and San Diego. Our family has flown from California to Hawaii for 60 years. There's been a few situations where the flight crews really extend our vacation when we board the flights.
On our last trip to Hawaii out of LAX, we had to go a similar route due to Navy training maneuvers off the coast of LA. It added almost an hour to the flight but, the views were spectacular.
Jeb, a pilot here. Just thought I would mention, the strange routing was almost certainly due to ATC requirements due to inbounds and other outbounds of the LA area.
The Pacific (Hawaii) routes entry/exit points may have been packed. So spacing and timing may have cause an East bound delay until a certain time to ensure spacing on the ABCDEF routes.
Every so often the Navy will shut down the offshore airspace south of Santa Barbara which requires every flight coming out of SoCal to head north before heading out over the ocean.
As someone who’s lived on Maui for 9 years. Thank you for coming! Supporting local business right now thru tourism is what we need as a state now due to covid. Hope you had a great time !
Tourism has plunged by more than 72% in 2020 vs. 2019. Hawaii is hurting. Flying restrictions don't help. Be aware if you have to go into quarantine in Hawaii, there are vigilante groups that report you to law enforcement if you break quarantine.
Really great to see a new video, Jeb. I’ve been following you about 2 years now and have enjoyed your videos... and your perspective of appreciation ever since. I live in American Samoa. Except for a couple of 8-seater puddle jumpers for trips to nearby Independent Samoa, the only flights we get are two Hawaiian Airlines flights to HNL each week. (A330) That is until the pandemic. The territory closed its borders in March 2020 and we haven’t had any regular passenger service since. We are 100% COVID-19 free. It never got here. However, with the exception of a couple of charter flights for those needing advanced medical care, we have all been stuck here since... and those who are away haven’t been able to get home. Watching your videos... especially the Hawaiian Airlines videos... gives me a since of peace and a reminder that soon enough we will be flying again and we can go to the places we need to go. If you ever decide to travel to PPG, you’ve got a local guide. See you in the skies!
I flew Hawaiians A321 yesterday from HNL to SJC and it was the smoothest flight I ever had and the engine noise was music to my ears. The seats were comfy. Flight wasn’t full so I had the whole row to myself . Love it!!!!!
It is amazing how some airlines will continue to provide good service despite COVID, while others use it as an excuse to cut service. Yes, the airlines are hurting right now but providing no to little service to your customers is not a way to get them to come back, on the other hand, I am sure the people who are flying Hawaiian will consider them again. Great video as always Jeb.
Jeb, I'm literally flying to Hawaii tomorrow morning from Boston and I have watched your a330 review, maybe, a hundred times! When I saw this upload though, I started dying of laughter. The ironies of 2020/2021!!!!
Great job. I’ve been going to Hawaii on business since the ‘80’s, and I lived there in the ‘70’s. Over the last 50 years, I probably flew every airline that serviced Hawaii from the US mainland. In the 1980’s and ‘90’s I did almost all of my flying there on Delta (back in the L-1011 days). No more. Hawaiian is the ONLY airline I use to Hawaii. They put everyone else to shame, in my opinion. Their A-330 service out of LAX is my favorite. I’ll be using them this November when my wife and I go there for our 33rd.anniversary.
How did I miss this amazing video! Great job and information. We appreciate your understanding and respecting the rules and regulations. It’s all about keeping the people of Hawaii safe. We simply don’t have the infrastructure to handle a major outbreak! Aloha from Kauai! 🤙🏼

Glad you thought better of yourself and decided to share! The seat is almost idenitcal to the American A321neo I took to HNL this fall, but the service is night and day, Hawaiian did excellent for you. Congratulations on the engagement as well Jeb!
Thanks for this review, Jeb! Last month, I booked HA's A321 First Class from LAX to Kona for my fiancée and I's honeymoon this fall! I was hoping to get the A330 via Honolulu, but it was much more expensive so we opted for the direct flight. Glad to see it's still a great option! :D
Hi Jeb, I just hit subscribe and am thoroughly enjoyng your vlogs and videos. HA had a lounge pre-COVID at LAX that was superb. I have family members who miss the LAX lounge, which was a full-featured first class experience. However, I believe after COVID curtailed LAX to Hawaii flights in early 2020, I think HA closed that lounge. From your January posting date, I believe your video is very early in the ability to travel to Hawaii again during the pandemic. Our family concurs with your comments about the food aboard HA flights. One of my best friends works for HA in Honolulu. I really want to thank you for your video work and your posting.
I’ve been on the a321neo from SJC-HNL And From HNL-OGG on the Boeing 717. It was the best flight experience I’ve ever been on. I like the Orange with purple mood lighting on the a321neo

Thanks for this vlog and keep it up. Plus if on your next aviation vlog you could give my neice Charlotte Gandhi a shout out it would be cool Thanks in advance Neil
Hey Jeb, always look forward to your videos, was wondering weather Delta would take the hint about Hawaiian Airlines approach to first class amenities, not worth all that money for cheez its and Biscoff cookies 🍪. 🤙 Mahalo.
I flew a Hawaiian Airlines A-330 from San Diego to Honolulu, the Customer Service was outstanding. For some reason we flew over Mexico for a while. The Lady sitting next to me was a vegetarian so I ended up with 2 entrees . I plan on flying from Anchorage to Honolulu this September on Alaska Airlines. That should be a interesting flight.
6:49 That's a huge problem for me, whenever I open the window shade to film the sky/wing flex, etc, everyone tells me to shut it down. It's really annoying.
PP gets you access to Alaska’s lounge, but bit of a walk at lax and the Plumeria lounge is light years better then Hawaiians at HIA. When did the NEO start flying into a lax ? Thought it was Long Beach only

Hawaiian Airlines LAX to OGG has always gone north to Oxnard and then, it hangs a left at Channel Islands…no idea why but, we used to look for our house when we would fly over Oxnard.
Just found your channel today and have watched a couple of the Amtrak vids and the Emerites video. Very cool and thanks for posting. Now.... What do you do for a living?
Your routing was presumably due to winds aloft. If a more northerly high altitude airway has more favorable winds you’ll more than make up the difference in the cruise on that long of a flight. Great video, glad to see it’s not too cumbersome getting onto Maui. Hope to get back soon!
There is military airspace off the Cali coast near LAX. Could be that one of the ranges was hot so you had to go north of vandenburg before heading west.
Flew them 5 yrs. ago round trip from JFK to HNL, premium economy westbound and 1st class on the return. Absolutely our best domestic airline. Complemetary wine in economy with our meal, when does that ever happen. The lay-flat sleeper was just wonderful on the night flight home.

Had to fly a similar flight route out to Hawaii. It was due to an extremely highspeed headwind and the plane would need to fly north and around to save on fuel. We went as far north as Oakland before heading out over the ocean.
Any news on when HA will get their Dreamliners? Eager to take them vacation days. Me and the fam always take HA, just can’t beat their all around service.

Seems like a silly question to ask, but is the 4 th row a better choice compared to row 1 on this aircraft in first class? Thank you.
I have taken that route before only was seated in the back 'cheap' seat and it was still great ride
We're going to be in the second row, but I'm now worried about noise from the galley. What are your thoughts on that?
We weren’t sitting there, as you know, so I’m not absolutely sure. But, I don’t think it would be too bad. Have a great trip!!
My guess on the strange routing would be military exercises restricting airspace over the ocean, may have needed to fly north to go around
