  • How to replace front differential fluid on volvo P2 AWD models NOT equipped with Haldex. This tutorial is for the first gen AWD set-up pre-Haldex.
    Note: the volvo part # for the fluid is 31259380. Further research suggests that this stuff really just is 75W90 gear oil so just find an after market supplier of that stuff and you should be just fine (not to mention $25 bucks ahead!).

    For my Haldex oil swaps I use a really big syringe with the pipe stuck on the end. Thanks for the video, think Ive just found another job......

    Thanks for the videos. I just finished replacing the ZF steering rack on my ‘04 XC70 with good results thanks to your video on the topic. Thank you my friend.

    TNN46-13-2008-02-11 says to remove 100ml after filling - tricky. Specifically, the capacity of the front angle gear is 750ml (point to where it overflows and drips) yet the correct amount of oil is specified by Volvo as 650ml. Extraction/Filling Syringe Pump (200 ml) sold at FCPeuro and other places works quite well to get the fluid out quicker than syphoning. With the syringe you can shave 40 minutes off the procedure shown in Bigtime's video; also its a lot less messy :)

    How did the AWD perform for you this past winter? We have two P2 V70s and I'm considering an XC70 since I already know the platform well. But wondering if it's better to get the later gen Haldex from 05-07. Btw you do have Haldex just an earlier gen with mechanical pump which results in slightly slower rear engagement. FCP Euro website has a good article on history of Volvo AWD

      Really Happenings the V70XC is a beast in the snow. Nothing it can’t plow through. It does consume a bit more gas than the S60 (say 1L more per 100km). For a bunch of reasons I would look for a 2005 + model.

      @@Bigtime_mcalpine thanks. If you have time, I'd be interested in your view of the various reasons the 05-07 models are superior.... Updated transmission, gen 3 Haldex are the big points to me.

      Really Happenings I’m on same page: better AWD in 05+, less issues with failing DIMs, BCM’s, Throttle body (that’s more 01/02), and updated interior dash console and center console.

      DEFINITELY get something 2003+ (just as long as it doesn't have that damned viscous coupling, I forget which haldex gen did away with it, all I know it was sometime in '03 when it changed). Personally I wouldn't get anything 05+, because by then Ford's cost cutting seems to have infected Volvo...glass headlights were replaced with plastic ones, the entire car got lighter (compare '04 and '05 curb weight) so heaven knows where else they started cutting corners.

    Fairly new to Volvo. For a 2002 V70 station wagon, front wheel drive. Is there differential fluid to be changed and is it the same as yours as far as location of bolts...etc.? Thank you.

    • @Bigtime_mcalpine
      @Bigtime_mcalpine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, you can ignore this video altogether. That’s one of the advantages of FWD. much simpler to maintain. You should consider changing your transmission fluid though if you have not already.

      @@Bigtime_mcalpine Ok, so FWD has NO differential fluid to change then ?
      I've already flushed the transmission fluid. Thanks so much.

    How many miles on that oil before you replaced it?

    • @Bigtime_mcalpine
      @Bigtime_mcalpine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      qcbtbx well I bought the car last year and it had 259k Km. Up until last week I would have guessed original fluid BUT I was under the car last week and noticed that two of the angle gear bolts that brace it to the tranny were missing suggesting that someone had previously worked on it...so short answer, not sure. It did need a flush though.
