Can we just take a moment to recognize what an amazing voice he has, he sounds every bit as good live as in the studio. Just a handful of singers in the world can claim this.
What is even more amazing is that this is after the vocal cord surgery during the making of the prior album Blackout. The initial tracks were done with Don Dokken on lead vocal. It wasn't clear at the time if Klaus would ever be able to sing again at all, let alone as well as he did previously. What an amazing recovery and rehabilitation, that his voice post surgery was even stronger and better than before. Amazing! The rest is history, as they say.
Seeing him live and hearing the effects on his voice on the studio recording is how I learned that recording doesn't capture everything that the voice can do.

It suddenly dawned on me, while i was watching this video, that i am no longer watching this channel for the reactions. I am now being educated by a teacher. I am learning a new appreciation for songs i have been hearing for many years through the explanations and demonstrations from Amy. I am also gaining new understanding and appreciation for tunes i was not overly fond of too. I will be back for the next lesson with eager anticipation.

I saw them live about five years ago. They were performing in a small town next to my hometown in Finland at a local football pitch. I wasn't really expecting much. I thought it was gonna be some sad old geezers who would maybe sound a bit like what they used to sound like in the 80s and early 90s. Boy, was I surprised! Even tough they were already in their seventies, they looked like they were in their early fifties, they moved around the stage like they were in their late twenties and they sounded better live than they ever have sounded on record! I was truly blown away. And even when it started raining in the middle of the gig, the audience stayed there in the muddy field, cheering and singing along to their beautiful songs.
I had the pleasure of meeting the band, and Michael as well in NYC in 1985. They stayed at the hotel where I worked while they were promoting World Wide Live. One day coming in from the train to work I saw Klaus walking ahead of me, black leather from head to toe in the sweltering July city heat no less!. I caught up to him and explained who I was, and we walked together to the hotel talking about the band and the tour. I'll never forget that walk! I was able to meet them all together as they left and got autographs, because I had kept my promise to my manager not to pester them during their stay! Amazing musicians and people!
So I am expanding across so many boundaries. I am a black man, listening to a heavy metal song being analyzed by a Classical music harpist and I am not thrown so far off because we are all making this effort to connect to a piece of music together. Her thinking of this, from her very unique perspective, adding her extensively knowledge to this is composition is beyond fascinating. Seeing her dainty and delicate self, her timeless pearls and lithe fingers extrapolating the notes is such a universal vibe to me. I could honestly say, I could have a conversation with anyone who is trying this deftly to understand someone or something outside of their normal space.

Scorpions are the top of live performance in arena Rock. They are all masters of their craft and it shows! Klaus the vocalist has a fantastic range, with clarity and richness of the voice. Rudy the guitarist projects the tones most pleasing to the ear. This band is world class and loved everywhere.

It's so nice to see someone being genuinely moved by this song. I'm 52 now and I remember being a big Scorpions fan back in the days in Germany. They are among the very best when it comes to rock ballads. I don't know the first thing about musics technicalities, but this song is so full of surprises, full of emotions, it evokes real feelings and makes you think. This song should be dedicated to all people who, without it, would never have been born. It is one of the most famous slow-dancing songs in the world, and one of the most effective! At that time, everyone was waiting for it at dance parties. This couldn't have worked with songs like Child In Time or Stairway To Heaven cause the end can't be danced on. Scorpions knew what they were doing for both music and lyrics. Closer, tighter, cheek to cheek then... nine months later 😊

Ok, I’m tripping out on Amy. I watched her Doors video on “When the Musics Over” and she must be around my age (40’s). I never thought I’d be watching ANYONE sitting in a studio full of harps, etc that didn’t know The Doors and also would be playing a Scorpions song on her harp. I am a guitar player and understand all the theory as she plays (non musicians might not) so that is very interesting to me. TH-cam is seriously wonderful for music and many other things. I did not know there were people like Amy in the western world that didn’t know these bands and this music. Ok, Amy, u got me! I’m subscribing…..:) P.S. your facial expressions are fun to watch. I think u really liked this one.

Well Amy... you just got there one of the GREATEST, STUPENDOUS BANDS in rock history... I absolutely love Scorpions, is one of those bands that should have never ended, EVEN better than "THE ROLLING STONES" the forever band (still rocking in their 80's), Stones are great but Scorpions even better. I am positive this would be one of your bands for ever and most of their songs will be in your play list, that is what I call a GREAT rock music.
One of my favorite songs ever made. It's such a crescendo, such a ride. It's amazing in a great car stereo as well. I can't imagine how they felt in the studio when they were finishing this. They have said this song solely was so popular that it may have increased the population of the country of France.

Still one of my favourite songs of all time. I had 2 speeding tickets because of the scorpions. They used to play Holiday on the radio back then and for some reason I just sped up listening to it. They owe me money!!!
The song is also considered a thinly veiled metaphor for a still divided Eastern & Western Germany. "Your pride has built a wall so strong that I can't get through, is there really no chance to start once again?" and "Yes, I've hurt your pride, and I know what you've been through, you should give me a chance, this can't be the end, I'm still loving you" were clear references to the Berlin Wall and the despair many Germans felt about their divided homeland.
Scorpions are a top band, but still underrated... this maybe the reason why almost all metal band have their "soft" moments. There are very well know for their ballads, but for me they have much more to offer.
The first time I heard this song I was going on Christmas leave from the army and I smoked pot for the first time sitting in the barracks waiting on my ride to the airport. It’s been a favorite ever since. Good times
This is one of those songs that the live version (off of "World Wide Live") is really the best version. One thing to keep in mind about early hard rock and metal singers is that they weren't all rough and growly like today, they were often almost operatic. Singers like Klaus Meine (this singer) or Ronnie James Dio, or Rob Halford or Steve Perry (and many others). They were usually singers with a lot of power and a lot of range in their singing (something that I actually feel like is lost in today's metal where its more about who can growl the best). The idea was to have a singer who could hold his own against the loud music and "virtuoso" guitarists.

I love all the Scorpions music, but my absolute favourites are their power ballads. They are so beautifully composed and realised. This might just be my favourite reaction that you have done. I am super stoked that you appreciate it so much!
This was the song that made me fall in love with rock when I was a kid. And the craziest thing is: the version I used to know was the one with the fadeout on the start of that repeat before the solo, so CAN YOU IMAGINE how blown off my head got years latter when I heard the solo for the first time????? Oh my gosh, a 50 minute reaction to my favourite band? Just stumbled over your channel and already love it. I admit I have not the slightest idea about musical theory and can't read notes, but it was still really fascinating to listen to you dissect the song, and watch the joy on your face as you discovered this wonderufl piece of music. And if you ask me, this is not even their best song, even if it's one of their most known ones. Neither is Wind of Change. If I had to choose from that incredible amount of incredible songs, I would probably choose In Trance, and We'll burn the Sky. Those songs just blow you out of the water. I enjoy the Scorpions, and Winds of Change is one of my favourites. A fun fact is that the band did consider retiring , and did actually stop for about 12 months then they started again. They released the most recent studio album in 2022.
Great analysis of what has to be my #1 power ballad of the 80's! I've always loved how this song builds, Klaus' vocals (going from very soft & almost a whisper, to the powerful, soulful belt we know and love). I would highly recommend The Sails Of Charon as another Scorpions reaction/review. It's more steeped in their 70's sound (a bit more progressive, but still rock/metal). Love your channel.
I discovered Scorpions in 1980, they became my favorite band and still remain. This song, I believe, was a love song to East Germany. "....break down the wall someday, I will be there", And they were there when that wall came down. I am so happy for you that you discovered this song and this band, they are a force for good, as are you.
I love the Scorpions. They really rock. And this song. It really hits my heart. The crying guitar solos just bring the feeling flowing every time. I would never call them metal, but hard rockers 100% for sure. None the less. They are an awesome band. This song is what really put the Power into Power Ballads.

This style of song composition became widely copied and heavily used during this era. In large part due to it being a format that was more radio friendly/accessible for a hard rock/metal artist and appealed just as much or more to female gender as well. Record companies liked the power ballads because they were more likely to be successful hits. Guys liked them because the girls liked them and helped create common ground musically and, of course, also helped to set the proper mood. I've seen the.Scorpions live multiple times, but my favorite was always this tour, which was recorded and later released as the album World Wide Live. I was just 15, almost 16 at the time. It sounds silly, but as I watched your reaction and listened to your comments, I found myself moving between joyful tears and celebratory fist pumps. I feel music so strongly that it's hard to find others who can appreciate and experience it on the same level. Of course, you also understand it and are able to express it from a compositional perspective, better than I could. I'm so glad you recognized the greatness of it and that you enjoyed it so much. I'm curious, if you had listened to this much earlier in your musical journey when you were still adjusting to the sound of rock guitars and other instrumentation, would you still have been able to enjoy this as much? I think you are now able to recognize this more like a strong dramatic movement in a classical piece. Some people actually come to the conclusion that you can actually draw some strong similarities between the two. You've come so far. It's been quite a fun journey to take with you. Thank you.
Well Amy, you can sleep free of angst...that was a guitar! And later on 2 guitars. I very much enjoyed this, I am learning, from you, perspectives, view points that I hadn't come to without your reaction. It is a beautiful and great song, I've heard it before and will enjoy listening to it in the future, for sure, although I have a few critiques. The Scorpions are off my radar screen. I know of the band, I know their big hits and I've even watched a few TH-cams about the band. I don't have their albums. This song sounds impressive, it is impressive on the strength of the voice and I thought that the voice carried the entire song but later in it becomes quite a guitar centric song as well. It is both a ballad and an anthem. I can just imagine the very strong speakers in a large dark-ish arena ringing this song around and people holding their lit BIC lighters or cell phone flashlights in their arm swinging it from left to right along with the music. And there's nothing wrong with that. The song does suffer from some profound 80's quirks! It sounds very clinical (maybe because they're German, Oops!) It is also quite over-engineered in the studio and while sounding very impressive, after some time it starts to sound typical 80's "sappy." I still think it's a great song but for these reasons it is also profoundly not the greatness of, let's say, The Rolling Stones, or Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and the likes. I enjoy seeing a classically trained musician can open their ears. Allowing themselves to listen to (simple) rock/metal music. They actually see the structure between the music and lyrics, noticing the nuances in note choice.
When someone talks about internationally influential German bands I think of Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk and Can. So this was interesting as I have never listened to The Scorpions before.
When you do go down the road of the Scorpions library you're going to be amazed with the progression and style changes in each album. Not to mention discovering the talents of three incredible lead guitarist Michael Schenker, Uli Jon Roth, and Mathias Jabs.
Thanks for this wonderful reaction and analysis. The Scorpions are one of my absolute favorite bands, together with the Beatles and Pink Floyd. I'd be glad if you include some more of their music on your channel. Some songs I'd recommend to you are: Fly To The Rainbow (a 9-minute psychedelic rock piece) The Sails of Charon (a heavier song with a neoclassical guitar solo that influenced Yngwie Malmsteen a lot) We'll Burn The Sky (a 6 and a half-minute piece, Uli Jon Roth, their lead guitarists at that time, once decribed as a sort of mini symphony) Holiday (another beautiful ballad) Blackout, Rock You Like A Hurricane (classic Heavy Metal) And while a lot of Scorpions fans don't like it as it goes more into a pop rock direction, Wind of Change is still a beautiful song.
To the "fans" that dislike Wind of Change: This song is historical in meaning, not just to the band, but to the world. Who cares if it sounds like pop music. The importance of a West German band singing about being in Russia, on the other side of the wall, is absolutely amazingly historic in scope. I’ve seen them probably 15x and he’s insane in person. I’ve seen him not long ago at this old age and he’s still 9.8 out of 10 from when i first saw him. It’s incredible. I go to concerts every month and it’s amazing how most have been able to keep most of their voice after 40-50yrs. Some have lost it but expected with their singing style. But his vocal cords haven’t stiffened much all these years.
Scorpions are the kings of 80s metal ballads. All of their ballads are basically anthems. Even if you’ve never heard their music it sounds very familiar.

The Scorpions have a ton of great songs, but you’re right about this one. If it hooks you, it hooks you hard.
It's so nice to see someone being genuinely moved by this song. I'm 52 now and I remember being a big Scorpions fan back in the days in Germany. They are among the very best when it comes to rock ballads.
I don't know the first thing about musics technicalities, but this song is so full of surprises, full of emotions, it evokes real feelings and makes you think.

When I was stationed in Germany, I lived in the barracks. When I listened to the Scorpions, so did everybody else. Soooo good.
This song should be dedicated to all people who, without it, would never have been born. It is one of the most famous slow-dancing songs in the world, and one of the most effective! At that time, everyone was waiting for it at dance parties. This couldn't have worked with songs like Child In Time or Stairway To Heaven cause the end can't be danced on. Scorpions knew what they were doing for both music and lyrics. Closer, tighter, cheek to cheek then... nine months later 😊

Ok, I’m tripping out on Amy. I watched her Doors video on “When the Musics Over” and she must be around my age (40’s). I never thought I’d be watching ANYONE sitting in a studio full of harps, etc that didn’t know The Doors and also would be playing a Scorpions song on her harp. I am a guitar player and understand all the theory as she plays (non musicians might not) so that is very interesting to me. TH-cam is seriously wonderful for music and many other things. I did not know there were people like Amy in the western world that didn’t know these bands and this music. Ok, Amy, u got me! I’m subscribing…..:) P.S. your facial expressions are fun to watch. I think u really liked this one.

Well Amy... you just got there one of the GREATEST, STUPENDOUS BANDS in rock history... I absolutely love Scorpions, is one of those bands that should have never ended, EVEN better than "THE ROLLING STONES" the forever band (still rocking in their 80's), Stones are great but Scorpions even better. I am positive this would be one of your bands for ever and most of their songs will be in your play list, that is what I call a GREAT rock music.

One of my favorite songs ever made. It's such a crescendo, such a ride. It's amazing in a great car stereo as well. I can't imagine how they felt in the studio when they were finishing this. They have said this song solely was so popular that it may have increased the population of the country of France.

Still one of my favourite songs of all time. I had 2 speeding tickets because of the scorpions. They used to play Holiday on the radio back then and for some reason I just sped up listening to it. They owe me money!!!
The song is also considered a thinly veiled metaphor for a still divided Eastern & Western Germany. "Your pride has built a wall so strong that I can't get through, is there really no chance to start once again?" and "Yes, I've hurt your pride, and I know what you've been through, you should give me a chance, this can't be the end, I'm still loving you" were clear references to the Berlin Wall and the despair many Germans felt about their divided homeland.
Scorpions are a top band, but still underrated... this maybe the reason why almost all metal band have their "soft" moments. There are very well know for their ballads, but for me they have much more to offer.
The first time I heard this song I was going on Christmas leave from the army and I smoked pot for the first time sitting in the barracks waiting on my ride to the airport. It’s been a favorite ever since. Good times
This is one of those songs that the live version (off of "World Wide Live") is really the best version.
One thing to keep in mind about early hard rock and metal singers is that they weren't all rough and growly like today, they were often almost operatic. Singers like Klaus Meine (this singer) or Ronnie James Dio, or Rob Halford or Steve Perry (and many others). They were usually singers with a lot of power and a lot of range in their singing (something that I actually feel like is lost in today's metal where its more about who can growl the best). The idea was to have a singer who could hold his own against the loud music and "virtuoso" guitarists.
I would add Eric Adams and Kim Bendix Petersen. 😉

😂 It was actually written about the Berlin Wall, and the people who were on each side of the Wall, the star crossed lovers were a metaphor for the future reunification of Germany.
I love all the Scorpions music, but my absolute favourites are their power ballads. They are so beautifully composed and realised. This might just be my favourite reaction that you have done. I am super stoked that you appreciate it so much!

This was the song that made me fall in love with rock when I was a kid. And the craziest thing is: the version I used to know was the one with the fadeout on the start of that repeat before the solo, so CAN YOU IMAGINE how blown off my head got years latter when I heard the solo for the first time????? Oh my gosh, a 50 minute reaction to my favourite band? Just stumbled over your channel and already love it. I admit I have not the slightest idea about musical theory and can't read notes, but it was still really fascinating to listen to you dissect the song, and watch the joy on your face as you discovered this wonderufl piece of music. And if you ask me, this is not even their best song, even if it's one of their most known ones. Neither is Wind of Change. If I had to choose from that incredible amount of incredible songs, I would probably choose In Trance, and We'll burn the Sky. Those songs just blow you out of the water. Especially the older live versions.

I enjoy the Scorpions, and Winds of Change is one of my favourites. A fun fact is that the band did consider retiring , and did actually stop for about 12 months then they started again. They released the most recent studio album in 2022.
Great analysis of what has to be my #1 power ballad of the 80's! I've always loved how this song builds, Klaus' vocals (going from very soft & almost a whisper, to the powerful, soulful belt we know and love).
I would highly recommend The Sails Of Charon as another Scorpions reaction/review. It's more steeped in their 70's sound (a bit more progressive, but still rock/metal).

I discovered Scorpions in 1980, they became my favorite band and still remain. This song, I believe, was a love song to East Germany. "....break down the wall someday, I will be there", And they were there when that wall came down. I am so happy for you that you discovered this song and this band, they are a force for good, as are you.
I love the Scorpions. They really rock. And this song. It really hits my heart. The crying guitar solos just bring the feeling flowing every time. I would never call them metal, but hard rockers 100% for sure. None the less. They are an awesome band. This song is what really put the Power into Power Ballads.

This style of song composition became widely copied and heavily used during this era. In large part due to it being a format that was more radio friendly/accessible for a hard rock/metal artist and appealed just as much or more to female gender as well. Record companies liked the power ballads because they were more likely to be successful hits. Guys liked them because the girls liked them and helped create common ground musically and, of course, also helped to set the proper mood. I've seen the.Scorpions live multiple times, but my favorite was always this tour, which was recorded and later released as the album World Wide Live. I was just 15, almost 16 at the time. It sounds silly, but as I watched your reaction and listened to your comments, I found myself moving between joyful tears and celebratory fist pumps. I feel music so strongly that it's hard to find others who can appreciate and experience it on the same level. Of course, you also understand it and are able to express it from a compositional perspective, better than I could. I'm so glad you recognized the greatness of it and that you enjoyed it so much. I'm curious, if you had listened to this much earlier in your musical journey when you were still adjusting to the sound of rock guitars and other instrumentation, would you still have been able to enjoy this as much? I think you are now able to recognize this more like a strong dramatic movement in a classical piece. Some people actually come to the conclusion that you can actually draw some strong similarities between the two. You've come so far. It's been quite a fun journey to take with you. Thank you.

It is a beautiful and great song, I've heard it before and will enjoy listening to it in the future, for sure, although I have a few critiques.
The Scorpions are off my radar screen. I know of the band, I know their big hits and I've even watched a few TH-cams about the band. I don't have their albums.
This song sounds impressive, it is impressive on the strength of the voice and I thought that the voice carried the entire song but later in it becomes quite a guitar centric song as well. It is both a ballad and an anthem. I can just imagine the very strong speakers in a large dark-ish arena ringing this song around and people holding their lit BIC lighters or cell phone flashlights in their arm swinging it from left to right along with the music. And there's nothing wrong with that.
The song does suffer from some profound 80's quirks! It sounds very clinical (maybe because they're German, Oops!) It is also quite over-engineered in the studio and while sounding very impressive, after some time it starts to sound typical 80's "sappy."
I still think it's a great song but for these reasons it is also profoundly not the greatness of, let's say, The Rolling Stones, or Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and the likes.

I enjoy seeing a classically trained musician can open their ears. Allowing themselves to listen to (simple) rock/metal music. They actually see the structure between the music and lyrics, noticing the nuances in note choice.

When someone talks about internationally influential German bands I think of Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk and Can. So this was interesting as I have never listened to The Scorpions before.

To the "fans" that dislike Wind of Change: This song is historical in meaning, not just to the band, but to the world. Who cares if it sounds like pop music. The importance of a West German band singing about being in Russia, on the other side of the wall, is absolutely amazingly historic in scope. The song basically helped to define the end of the Cold War. 51:25

I’ve seen them probably 15x and he’s insane in person. I’ve seen him not long ago at this old age and he’s still 9.8 out of 10 from when i first saw him. It’s incredible. I go to concerts every month and it’s amazing how most have been able to keep most of their voice after 40-50yrs. Some have lost it but expected with their singing style. But his vocal cords haven’t stiffened much all these years.
Scorpions are the kings of 80s metal ballads. All of their ballads are basically anthems. Even if you’ve never heard their music it sounds very familiar.
Sails of Charon is the Scorpions track that really blew me away when ran across it 3 years ago for the first time.
The last time I saw them was five years ago, It was a great concert.
