For me, tilt vs Turn has been a real game changer. I tend to hook as I turned rather than tilting and catch up with hands flip. Thanks very much for this video.
When I do this drill and combine it with upper body connection (I feel I have a very firm triangle created with my arms, shoulders, club) I absolutely hit the ball solid. Thanks Eric!
Here's the thing. I've been following you amongst others for awhile.I appreciate what you guys do and you have helped. However I continued to have inconsistency. I'm a good athlete and was a very good baseball player. Last night I was watching a short of about 10 pros and their drives.I noticed one thing they all do. And it hit me, it's push back for the backswing and push forward for the downswing. Watching their swings from behind they all did the same exact thing. With their right shoulder and right knee. I watched over and over. I think you know what I'm talking about with the knee and shoulder. Getting the knee forward and the right shoulder come slightly down and around. My baseball swing at a low inside pitch or my slapshot.I went to the range using this today. And unbelievable results.I focused on this. I hit the ball like I never have and everything fell into place as a result. Weight forward, right arm to the side, sidebend and the consistency was amazing. Why don't you guys simplify it like that. My swing is like I see on the videos now. It's amazing
Very important part of the swing. This is where there is some value to keeping your head (almost) still in the backswing. So many videos out there confusing people on this big part of the golf swing. Thanks
This is a great drill- plus put a chair behind left leg/butt- show the students to stay down and keep the spine from standing up. Anyway, this drill you’re showing is absolutely key to teach them the contact position. It will revolutionize their concepts instantly. Tell students to see left shoulder then right shoulder-
Thank you, this is very useful. I applied it today in the practice bay with launch monitor and screen where I go. At age 82 it is all too easy to come out of posture. And it is also too easy to forget to turn while staying tilted when out on the golf course. It takes concentration and some effort. It is physically easier to make that erroneous turn without enough tilt. This is less of a problem at the range where you can repeat shots and are standing on a flat even surface with nothing special riding on your shot. But out on the golf course it is easy to be distracted by other thoughts like was my transition too rushed on the previous hole causing a low left shot so should I give it more time on this swing, remember to keep my left arm straight, remember to keep my left wrist in extension (bowed) and the right wrist in extension with my right forearm more vertical at the top, remember to keep the trail leg firm you let it wobble on the last shot, is this lie above or below my feet, is the ball in the rough so I should play it back in my stance, is there a bunker to avoid so I should aim left or right, is the wind helping or hurting, is the pin back or up, is this green notoriously hard and fast or slanted, did I double bogey this hole last week, etc. And maybe it's either on the first hole and I had to rush and am not loose, or its on one of the last holes and I'm a bit fatigued without realizing it. It can even be the view, wow, look how beautiful this hole is, or uh oh look at the lake on the right or the canyon on the left. We all have to deal with this, some better than others. Whatever, it can mean that you turned without enough tilt or stood up exactly as you show. I think I will try your tilt, tilt, turn reminder before making a shot the next time out and see if it might not help. At my age I'm not going to get the handle of the shaft pointing behind the ball, but am working on turning more (the hard part). Lastly, while focusing hard on tilting and turning, one still has to remember to shift weight forward onto the lead leg starting early, before the end of the backswing, and to move left shoulder up on the downswing. Otherwise you can make a nice tilt and turn and still stick it in the ground behind the ball.
THAT MOVE IS REVERSE TO MOE"S AS YOU END UP TILTING YOUR HIP INSTEAD OF TURNING THE HIP. IT ALSO HAS YOUR RIGHT FOREARM ABOVE YOUR LEFT WHICH IS A NO NO
Upper body tilt is such an important golf swing set up that leads to proper shoulder and hip turn to ensure effective inside- out swing path for better ball striking. IMO this is the very first thing you do when you approach the ball. Thank you coach Eric.
Great Video , I dont even feel the turn , When I first saw the Z. Allen video I started messing with this and I just feel the tilting not the turn and I hit some pure shoots thanks
Eric, that takes care of the backswing. what do you do in the downswing to retain the spine angle and hit the ball solid? maybe a second video explaining the downswing.
Hey Bob! You may enjoy checking out these two videos for all the details! th-cam.com/video/ngke5xPA1NE/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared th-cam.com/video/8efZMUpSu6U/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Great video as usual, Eric - I definitely don’t tilt enough for sure, lol - I’m over the range in a couple of hours so just going to concentrate on the movement initially - oh, the Zach Allen video just appeared on my screen as well so I’ll check that out - thanks very much, Eric 👍
Great video! I tend to stay horizontal and over turn my shoulders to be able get to parallel that I end up in a reverse pivot if my lower body isn’t perfect. Not good for the back! My head does exactly like your bad example. This will be my main focus this off season!
Great lesson and drill. How about going the other way - I can tilt and turn ok on the backswing but have trouble keeping my trail shoulder down on the downswing. Any drills for that?
Hi Eric Another fantastic drill. I’ll start working on many of your drills during our cold Canadian winter. One thing I have noticed since joining your site is that you have amazing balance. Do you have a drill for improving that? In my case I flop around like a fish out of water, and I would really like to improve that. Thanks I really enjoy your tips. I am a 70 year old “Experienced” golfer who wants to get a little better. Your 🇨🇦 Friend (Calgary Alberta Canada)
Hey Leon! Thank you! I think you'll enjoy checking out this one my friend... th-cam.com/video/S4BoK0BqyFE/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared Let us know if it helps!
I have been working on this drill with my irons and wedges and it has great. My question for you is how do I transition this thought/training to my driver and fairway wood
Eric great way to explain tilt thanks! I am fairly young still, but I don’t seem to be able to get shoulders completely perpendicular (90 degrees). I don’t know if there is something I can do to increase the turn or if I’m ok just to max out most I can and go with that. Seems like if I bend my left knee down a little more and let my right hip go back more I can get there.
Thanks Cody! You are spot on with the knees changing flex (lead leg flexing, trail leg extending)...that will help induce more hip rotation. That's PART of maximizing your backswing rotation. Some of the other parts/details in these videos below! th-cam.com/video/MI9XfoDBr00/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared th-cam.com/video/KGEBSufIGwo/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Thanks! Yes.....but in real swing blend them together at same time In backswing So lead shoulder goes DOWN and AWAY from target Trail shoulder goes UP and TOWARD target
Eric, great video. On the turn down, is the butt of the club pointing at or near the target line? I am worried that I will tilt with club going inside off of plane? Thanks Gary K
Thanks Gary! For a neutral, stock model...we'd like to see the butt of the club pointing at OR just outside the ball-target line at P5 (when the lead arm is parallel to the ground in the downswing). Look for this checkpoint from the down the line view when you're recording your swing to assess and adjust if needed👊
Does the right hip feel like it’s up and back because I believe that gives you freedom for arms to clear the body coming thru. Your thoughts on right hip depth?
100% We did two good ones on exactly that here: th-cam.com/video/PvljLtLumT8/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUvRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGhpcCBiYWNrc3dpbmcgZWFybHkgZXRlbnNpb24%3D th-cam.com/video/NRv07rSS0rw/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUvRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGhpcCBiYWNrc3dpbmcgZWFybHkgZXRlbnNpb24%3D
Hi Eric can we consider the biomechanics here specifically related to the spine. Let us consider the spine front to back (governs flexion and extension) and the spine laterally aka side to side (governs left and right tilt). At address we have spinal flexion. For a right hand golfer as we commence the backswing we immediately start losing flexion to gradual tilt and spinal extension meaning spine front to back is straightening, and spine laterally is bending until we achieve the required left side tilt and full spinal extension at the top of the backswing. During the downswing there commences right side tilt coupled with rotation to impact. At impact I assume we have returned to spinal flexion and possibly more tilt than at address. As we commence the follow through post impact we are again losing spinal flexion to extension meaning spine front to back is straightening and right side bend (spine bend laterally) is maintained and possibly increased well into follow through until the lateral right spinal side bend is eased to take pressure off the back. Is this on the mark or am I misguided?
When i do this and check back on video, I keep my head in the circle great from the face on view. But on down the line, at the top of the backswing, my head is down and forward. Too much tilt?
Exactly! Just a little bit too much lead side bend/tilt if your head is working down and forward out of the circle...dial that back just a touch and you should be good to go. You may enjoy this practice station/drill for extra feedback! th-cam.com/video/TIDfZFdNW_0/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
I find if I do this right, the downswing is mostly automatic. It’s also a great self diagnostic tool - if I’m having to work on the downswing and find inconsistent contact and just struggling overall with the downswing, I simply go back to working on this before I hit more balls. I bet if everyone who watches this video did these drills and only these drills before every range session and/or round, they’d scarcely require much else to make huge improvements in their swing. 🤷🏻♂️
What I noticed about the tilt and turn, is that the handle of the club points just behind the ball with a 90 degree turn of the shoulders. I noticed the other day, that as I’m striking the ball, the right arm is beginning to straighten. It’s this feel for the right arm straightening that puts the club head under the ball.
Not just a great video.. this should be in the top 10 of all videos. The teacher/trainer to some degree used to many words. He over talked the simplicity of the drill. Keep it simple.
I hear ya....in reality doing both at same time back and through.....just for those who don't have enough tilt want to feel the tilt FIRST and by it self and then add the turn component Same would apply to downswing
Now I am totally confused again. I was always taught to have a little right side spine tilt at setup. You are teaching to have left side tilt. I give up!
Hey Conrad! Sorry for any mis understanding there.... I...AM NOT.....suggesting left side tilt at setup. I....AM....suggesting that you start doing it DURING THE BACKSWING. Hey Eric, Thanks for clarifying! But why do we need right side bend/tilt in the setup if we are trying to get left side bend/tilt in the swing? Why wouldn't we just start with a little left side bend/tilt or no side bend eliminating excess movement in the swing? Thanks again

Tilt (right side bend) on downswing AS you rotate

Because the trail hand is lower than the lead hand on the grip.....thats it
If your right hand is lower on grip then left.......and you have no tilt.......your shoulders would be too open
It's not tilt, it's side bend.
Yep!
Last time I tried this my coach called it reverse pivot !
As long as your hips, or "weight", shifts FORWARD in the downswing (and not BACK), then you're good!
