Tom Dwan's UNBELIEVABLE Play! | $887,400 Poker Pot

  • Tom Dwan is back in the high stakes mix, playing for insane stakes against Andrew Robl and Chinese businessmen. This time the game is Short Deck Hold'em, a Texas Hold'em variant that generates enormous action. This hand is no exception, as the pot bloats to nearly a million US dollars on the turn. Should Durrrr really call this all-in on such a dangerous board?

He especially enjoys reviewing hands by popular high stakes pros like Viktor "Isildur" Blom, Fedor Holz, Dan Cates (Jungleman), Tom "Durrrr" Dwan, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, and Daniel Negreanu.

Personally I don’t want future episodes on short deck. You are an incredible no limit player, and your analysis on short deck is limited - for good reason. The game is very different and has a lot more variance. I enjoy your humor but your wisdom is the primary reason I tune in.

I also have little to no interest in short deck. I'm not bored with regular Texas Hold em. No way can I even start to consider it "mastered". I try and protect my little brain from "bad" inputs like playing online "free" poker etc that really isn't poker. This will just twist my head into a pretzel and can't do anything but harm my already too limited Texas hold em no limit game.

it would be kinda unnessesary as you have so many boats anyway, beside a straight would be become unplayable at all.
also trips might be less common than straights just because you wont take all the boats into account. trips turn so often into boats that well yea indeed they are realtivly rare just because they are stolen by boats lol

  • @TheGuyCalledX

I don't think Doug realizes how strong 98s is on the turn. When you make your flush in short deck, the chances of someone having a higher flush is very low. Robl playing this way with AcJc, Jc9c or Ac9c is less desirable because you'd be blocking cards you want the other players to have.

Actually it makes it exactly one of the hands you would call, @@GermanKhaos. Now it's in your pure bluff catching range, and if Robl shows up with a flush draw often enough, calling with trips becomes more reasonable.
It's actually hard to argue, but even though I think Tom Dwan was wrong, he was not AS wrong as many people might think he is. Trying to get into his shoes, I could see he was making up a game tree, and he thought that Robl was bluffing enough.

6:17 the straight draw is NOT dead against the King since the rules you quoted in the beginning are not the ones they use. they play the game straight > trips. which makes sense for cash game. raw probability wise trips are less likely than a straight but when you for example flop top set against a straight you are roughly 50-50 to win the hand in short deck if the money goes in. if trips would beat the straight it'd be drawing dead. so for cash game straight > trips is the way to go and they play it just like that. i played quite abit of short deck and trips > str8 is definitely the inferior rule set.

Three of a kind beat a straight

@George traitoros Ace can be the lowest card in the poker deck.
In this poker rules they don't play with 1,2,3,4,5 so Acee basically play like 5 for straight, but for card 6,7,8... Ace didn't replace them :)

Hey Doug, just wanted to say I've been a fan of your channel for a while and really enjoy the videos! Quick question wrt the hand above. At the beginning, they said Robl and Dwan took money off the table to play shorter stacks. I've never been in a game where such a thing was legal so how are they able to do that? Was it a house rule or something?

There's different short deck versions. There's the classic original version in which trips beats a straight. Then there's the version most popular with online sites where a straight beats trips. You always need to check the rules on straights versus trips before playing

I don't understand when Dwan says "1 million more" if that's Won, then it's only like 800 dollars US. If it's dollars, it's 1.1 billion Won and they were playing with around 400 million stacks...and at the start of the hand, the commentator said Dwan just took chips off the table because he wanted to have less in play. Was he just loading up so he has Robl covered? Wouldn't Robl just take chips off the table too?

"Fewer", not less. "Fewer cards in the deck...
    Less describes volume or mass..
    Fewer is numerical...
Example: One can have less money, but fewer dollars. Never less dollars..
Much like further and further..they are not synonymous or interchangeable.
    Farther denotes physical distance..
    Further is figurative...
One can travel farther down the road...
    Or further in his mind..
Further your education, further into the depths of your spirit... etc
Thought you may appreciate the tip...

Drew M there are 2 main variations of short deck. One in which 3 of a kind beats straights, and one where flushes beat full houses. Triton only uses the second variation.
