Your not-planning approach makes a lot of sense for high school. They're already interacting with others and having something set that you feel like you just have to absolutely work on seems to not be best for them because honestly there is a lot of spontaneity in real life conversations, interactions, and day to day life in high school; which is why group based is also great. Great work and great video as always Karina.
Hey Karina! So excited when I saw this video, thank you for sharing! I can totally relate. I am also a younger SLPA in a high school and it was super intimidating at first, but yes-- trust and relationship make all the difference. It's so nice to see your experience, it's so similar to mine! I'm glad you're enjoying it! And yes, UNO is the best! I use UNO in at least one session per day haha-- I actually incorporate it with vocab practice, so anytime they want to play a special card or a wild I give them a multi-meaning word or a vocab word in a sentence with context, this kind of gives them that incentive without me forcing it. Also, I recently started using it with conversation practice-- we establish a topic at the beginning, and then when it's your turn you have to contribute to the conversation with a comment, questions, or opinion for three turns then we choose a different topic. I highly recommend it for social groups, it was awesome!
Yay, I’m glad you enjoyed watching! I didn’t realize how many SLPAs work with high school students, so I’m excited to sort of get a conversation around that going. Ah! So the more powerful cards serve as the reinforcer, that sounds like fun!! Thanks for the ideas!
I am about to start a position with Middle School and High School. This video is getting me excited for my year to start! There isn't a lot of information out there for first timers so thanks for making these!
Korina, thanks for sharing your experiences. Do you think you could record some of your high school sessions, kind of like you did in your “day in the life” video… where you omit their faces? I know from experience that teens aren’t always cooperative, but they also love media, so they might go for it. I think it helps seeing how sessions flow and not just hearing. Thanks!
