Warhammer: The Best Heavy Mech in Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries

  • The Warhammer (WHM-6R) is the best & most deadly non-hero heavy mech in Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries, because it is able to engage targets from far, doing good damage, and never stop shooting when in close range, melting any enemy. This video will show you the Warhammer in action, and how to build the mech from the ground up.
Let me know in the comments below whether you use the Warhammer as well, or whether you have a better heavy mech for MW5.

the marauder is actually more narrow than most of the heavy mechs, allowing it to torso turn and spread damage across itself when hit, and by spreading the damage will actually increase its survival rate since its parts will not take as much damage.

I agree, the Marauder is just a beast and imho the best non-hero IS heavy mech, hands down. The Warhammer is ok, but it takes too much damage due to it's boxy upper body. The default WHM-6R is basically a PPC grave. I also like the weapon configs on the MAD much better. Both have 2 PPC's, but the support weapons on the Warhammer are practically useless. You don't want to be brawling with a pair of MG's and small lasers, especially with those torso hitboxes and paper-ish armor. I suggest getting rid of those and putting in more heatsinks and/or armor. The shoulder-mounted ballistic slot on the standard MAD-3R can easily be upgraded to an UAC5 and spam rounds over cover while your PPC's are cooling off. The MAD-3D is also very nice. Get rid of the lasers, put a third PPC on the shoulder and give it some double heatsinks. You now have a faster and more accurate Awesome with great hitboxes!

I was against using the Warhammer because, in my experience, the arms are blown off almost the second the battle starts, but you've convinced me to try your build with the 6R. Having said that, I still think that the Black Knight is a good choice as cooling can be managed by using double heat sinks, creative firing groups, and top tier weapons that cause less heat. Also I think that the Archer is WAY better than you suggest, because dual LRM 20s can demolish targets at extreme range. I've often played with an archer and hung back launching artillery while the assault mechs duke it out.

Archer is fine - very nice LRM boat that can still go to town at close range if it needs to.
Orion is basically a pocket Atlas - good if you need a pseudo-assault mech in case weight limit gets you - tough, fit for every range.
Can't argue with Warhammer, though. I currently run the PPC variant. Just removed machine guns, kept the SRM to limit ammo dependency and to max armour. It works very nicely. PPC shreds at long and medium ranges.
Jagermech can be hilarious, if I'm being honest. I normally do not like mechs that are too ammo dependent, but it can rain some hilarious amounts of firepower, if your aim is good and if you can keep it out of harms way.
Dragons are basically larger, faster centurions. Nearly the same weapon setup, similar armour value. They are basically medium mechs in a heavy bracket. BUT I admit, the speed on them is nice. Work decently well in a group if you can use their speed and keep them out of the brawling range. They are pretty decent at hunting light and medium mechs, but have trouble punching even in their own weight bracket in my opinion. It is a niche use, but hey...

I appreciate the video, your playstyle is a bit different from mine though. I find the Marauder 5D suits my needs fine. I personally prefer arm mounted weapons. Gives me a little more flexibility in deciding where and how I want to engage my opponents. Torso weapons have a limited range of fire.
I do admit I somewhat followed your logic with theory crafting my build by dropping some of my heavy weapons for lasers. I swaped the arm er ppcs for a pair of high teir pulse lasers, swaped the arm medium pulse lasers for regular lasers for reduced heat, put a tier 5 er ppc in the shoulder slot for the big hurt if I need it and ridgeline sniping, swaped the ssrm2 for an srm4 and gave it 2 tons of ammunition, 10 double heat sinks giving about 3h/s cooling, and full armor. I also stripped all the jumpjets, I rarely use them anyway.
Might not be the best build but it works for me. I sometimes drop the er ppc for the standard version for better heat management, I just like the er version for the large increase in velocity, (good for swating locusts) nearly 900 meters a second difference, the range on it is rather pointless though, your almost never going to engage a target at over 1,500 meters lol.

Edit: So I had a look at my Jeager just now, needed a refit for the first time in a few days, 2x M Las, 2x AC-2bf, 2x LRM 10, the ballistics slots are smol! *Facepalm*
    Personal favourites:
Currently using 2 CTF-2X's, both with AC-10BF, ER L laser, 2 M lasers and an SRM6 ST, had the 1X but the extra laser made it a bit energy heavy, general purpose heavy like the description says, but I like that, it's kinda like a heavy mech equivalent of a T-34 or an M4 Sherman of WW2 vintage.
Funnily enough I also have a Warhammer 6R in a similar configuration to what was advised, so I guess that's covered.
Shout-out to the Jeagermech with 2 large missile slot's, 2 large ballistic slot's, and 2 medium energy slot's, it actually provides a great platform to build a multi-weapon type mech with preference, balance, or exclusion to any of three types in favour of the others.
Went for AC-2BF's, 2 M lasers and the largest SRM with ST I could get on both arm's while still having sufficient cooling and armour on mine. (I tend to use this one more than the other heavies due to the sheer volume of fire you can put on a target at any range engage-able.)

I set it up to chain fire on both the lasers and a group for the SRMs. This let's you double tap the button and basically use just one or both lasers at the same time and the SRM6s you can basically chain fire non stop or tap, tap, tap and get that alpha spike. My favorite build so far.
As far as weapons on the arms, I prefer long range weapons on the arms for the use versus flyers. Trying to get your torso up to take them out is a pain. But I do agree you don't want everything on the arms. Would be terrible to lose both arms and be out of weapons completely.

Haven't used heavy mechs in a while, but you made some great points regarding using this one. Personally, I mostly stuck with the Orion as I got lucky with finding the hero version on sale and I can't pilot a mech without at least one medium to large ballistic weapon (my main gun needs to be a Gauss Rifle or a pair of Ultra AC5 or LB 10-X AC-SLD). That said, I wasn't a fan of it and quickly ditched it when I found the Atlas D for sale not too long afterward. I also found that the AI was terrible with the Warhammer, so I was pretty skeptical going into this video. You did convince me to at least give this mech a try myself in another mission, and I do agree with large lasers over ppcs as the vast majority of combat in this game occurs at medium to short range. I'm sitting on a pile of tier 4 ER PPCs that can shoot over 1500m but generate over 10 heat per shot, no thanks! Regular tier 4 ppcs still generate around 6 heat per shot and that's still a bit too much for me.
I'm curious to see which weapons you prefer in general and of course which assault mech you recommend. I love the Annihilator for defense and war zone missions only (sometimes demo as you only have one waypoint to travel as these mechs are slow as hell), but otherwise use the Mauler 2P for the dual medium ballistic hardpoints on the side torsos (also can stick a pair of LRM10 launchers on them as well). The Atlas (both variants) seem to be the best option for AI pilots, but after using it myself for hours upon hours, I got bored of it. Anyway, look forward to seeing more MW5 videos from you.

Thanks for the insight! I need to make it more clear in future videos that these 'best' mechs are meant to be piloted by us and not our stupid lancemates!
A lot of people like ppcs, and you're lucky to have quite a few ER versions. I imagine I'm in the smaller camp that doesn't like them too much in MW5, mainly due to the heat and the fact that there are far more enemies to take care of. Cheers!

I had the opportunity to pick up a Warhammer in the Hero Black Widow Variant. That thing is truly awesome, allowing you also to go for an AC2 BF Build (which is awesome to take down enemies at greater distances). Also heatmanagement is extremely good.
So yes, I can agree on your choice.
    For the AI:
I highly recommend to pick up the Archer as soon as possible. It is an awesome support mech and the AI manages the missiles quite good.
Also I loved the IV4 Variant of the Quickdraw, same as the hero Wolverine it delivers amazing burst, high range damage and makes it a very reliable brawler as well.
But those are Hero Mechs. (Doesn't mean you shouldn't give them a try, if you're lucky enough to find them)
Also the Gauss Variant of the Orion is extremely effective (especially for AI Pilots. They can be quite accurate with the Gauss shots, if they are skilled enough. Just order them to stay at some distance and you won't lose the Gauss canon that easy)

my ideal heavy mech doesn't exist. for this game, it would be one with big engine for speed, 1 large energy in each arm, two small ballistic, and two medium energy in each torso, 2 engine heat sincs and two jump jets slots in each torso.

I know I'm a bit late watching this video, but I'm not a fan of actually piloting this mech. It's great for my lancemates though. I take a different approach - I keep the SRM launcher and PPCs on it and drop the small lasers instead. Lancemates never seem to shoot fast enough to overheat anyways, so it's okay that this runs hot, and I find small lasers are just not worth it. I just can't find a build that I like to pilot myself, and I've tried numerous different things.
However, I think the Warhammer would probably be the best heavy mech out there with one modification -> swapping one of the arm hardpoints for a ballistic hardpoint that can carry an AC10. It would be a bit funky to pilot a mech with a PPC, AC10, SRM6, 2 medium lasers, 2 small lasers, and 2 machine guns, but that variety would help out in so many different situations, and dropping a PPC for an AC10 would help with the heat issues that the standard build has. I don't think I'd use the small lasers, but leaving those hardpoints there for flamers would be interesting. I'm sure that it would still run hot if you tried to run everything at the same time, but with that loadout, you really shouldn't be running everything together anyways. If it's too complicated to pilot, you could take your pick of dropping weapons to make it simpler to pilot with fewer different weapon systems while simultaneously improving heat management. And you would also have the option of putting a LRM launcher instead of the SRM launcher, or dropping the AC10 down to something with longer range, which would help with long range damage. You could drop the PPC down to a large laser for better heat management too. Etc. There's a lot of different ways you could load it out with that one modification, and It would be an extremely versatile chassis.
If you include newer mechs that have been added since this video was posted, I think the ARC-2K is my favourite mech to command. 2 large lasers in the arms are great for shooting tanks/turrets/vtols, and then I swap the LRMs for SRMs, as 2 SRM6 launchers provide some pretty punishing close range DPS. When up close, I prioritize shooting the SRMs, and use my lasers as heat allows for extra DPS. It's quite fun to pilot. It does well at medium range, and is pretty nasty up close.
With the ARC-2R, I downgrade the LRMs to SRMs, and throw some knuckles on it and go brawling. It's really nasty up close. It's how I fit an archer until I find a 2K to use instead, as the 2R is easy to find.
My second favourite bigger mech would be a Marauder, with the PPCs downgraded to large lasers, and a torso AC10 on it. Like your warhammer build that downgrades the PPCs to large lasers, it has way better heat management that way. It's fantastic for medium range engagements, and still is respectable in a brawl.
After that, I really like the Jagermech. It can really put out a barrage of AC5 shells at a respectable range. It's a great sniper, whether you're going after cockpits, arms, or legs. It runs so cool that I really wish it had a couple extra slots for more medium lasers. It feels weird to not have to actively manage heat when piloting it, compared to other things I usually pilot.....
I always keep a thunderbolt around for a lancemate too. I basically refit the 5S to resemble a 5SS lol. It's really effective for the weight imo, but I just don't like piloting it myself. It feels underwhelming, but the AI seems to make it work.

The Black Knight with the BAP is superior to the hero version, and is one of the deadliest laserboats. Fix it with 3 large SB lasers and 4 SB S or M lasers, and you have a neverending lightshow that is both tanky and dangerous. You can also upgrade it easily since it has a mono weapons type. The thunderbolt is also highly underrated, it is a walking fridge with guns and can soak more damage than its armor implies due to a small hitbox and great hardpoints (assuming you remove the MGs). I would pick both these over any variant of Warhammer, since they have less arm hardpoints and AI lancemates can also pilot them.

Hi thanks for the video! I’ve been exploring your suggestions and have to agree, faster mechs waste less time and Warhammer, Battlemaster and Kintaro models you recommended are very very worthwhile pursuits! Thank you! Also…not to insult anybody but I always hear players dismissing hero mechs as they are too hard to find! If you look at the Starmap completely focused in…look for industrial hubs if you see a planet in an industry hub that has a face/skull then that means you can buy a hero mech there. I have almost every hero mech there is…some just aren’t worth the money. That’s a completely whole different debate though. Also planets in industrial hubs with the package symbol always have double heat sinks. I’m sure a lot of you already know about these symbols so I don’t mean to insult you this is just for those who really don’t know and newbies.

    • @KnightKnowledge

I would say that finding 'specific' hero mechs are difficult just due to RNG. Even in late game, in the highest difficult Industrial Hubs, its very common to STILL only find Light/Medium Hero mechs, instead of Heavy and Assault. I've never tested buying a Hero mech, to possibly remove it from the pool of available Hero mechs.
If you check my Mechwarrior 5 playlist, I have a few videos using light mechs. My favorite being the Firestarter b/c it has good speed, armor but more importantly, a slew of hardpoints. Best thing is, a typical player will get one easily and early.

It's a question of time. Raven comes later in the game.

The marauder is the best is heavy mech all stop. Sadly i keep getting warhammers instead. I always get the hammers chewed up, but my marauders always seem to do well.

King Crab eats them with the twin AC20 and then spits them and it has an LRM 20 also for far softening them up.

Aaahhh dam. Orion VA, T5 AC10, srm and M lasers i can pretty much melt mechs cock pit instantly. The Kintaro with M lasers and stacked with Srm is instant kill for most torse hits if im very close unless im up against assult mechs then is two or three.

Warhammer with twin PPCs in chain fire and LRM 15's I think it is. If you get the Awesome 8T you can do exactly the same in that but it's an all round upgrade. Great for everything just watch your heat build up and only use chain fire. Very quickly removes aggro from the field and your AI become proficient with it over time often removing choppers with a PPC before you even see them.
The Kintaro build looks great but for AI pilots Thunderbolts are incredibly resilient. Never ever give the AI short range weapons unless you want them suiciding at close range.
End game you cannot beat an annihilator with 4 * LBX AC 10 solid shot it's just filthy. Don't need anything else but ammo and a few med lasers for turrets. It removes mechs from the game quicker than anything else I've seen apart from dedicated SRM boats but it can do it from 800-1000m easily.

      I agree with your Warhammer.
I don´t use the annihilator , have it in cold storage right now.
      It is just to slow.
Maneuverability and speed can be a weapon too.

@@Alienking01 The only time I don't use it is for large map raids and assassinations as you're quite right it's slow. However for defence/warzone it can't be beat the combination of heavy armour and high damage means dodging is pretty much optional. Take some AI buddies and get them to meatshield whilst you take out priority targets.

You can not fit LRM15 into medium missile slot.

@@eldridgep2 Yes the stock build has SRM6 and it is a medium missile hardpoint, LRM 15 can not be placed into that slot, only LRM 10 or 5.

WHM's left torso is seriously bugged. It seems to attract the most damage, the hitbox is large. Often shot out under heavy dures.. And no, angling doesn't work.

Which is better PPC or L Laser ?

    • @KnightKnowledge
      @KnightKnowledge  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think the majority of players would say PPC, but I personally like L Lasers for weight savings and as a brawler, i'm more mobile, rather than being stationary/sniping.

@@KnightKnowledge thank you for the input. I used to prefer PPC but since aiming while mobile is bit tricky and L Laser shot for a while, now im more L Laser
