  • Hulk used to be one of my favorite Avengers, now not so much. His transformation back to Bruce Banner in Thor: Ragnarok perfectly encapsulates everything great the Hulk once stood for. Here's why Hulk isn't as good as he used to be.

    Something everyone seems to forget is that time isn't normal on Sakaar. Hulk was there for decades if not centuries. Loki had a ten second head start that translated to two weeks.

      @EZ-IZZY1995 5 ปีที่แล้ว +444

      Which explains how Hulk would’ve evolved that much intelligently. He goes from saying “Puny God” to having his hair cut, wearing beads, knowing what a towel is, relaxing in a whirl pool, and having an honest sense of his own strength and able to draw comparisons between fire and water. He knows his strength is fighting “Giant Monsters” and is self aware enough to protest when Thor calls him back. That kind of growth and self awareness would have taken DECADES and it all started in the Jet. I wish that was more touched upon in the film, because I missed it the first time.

    • @celestialsoldier622

      You are mistaken. The reason Loki was on there longer then Thor is because he was kicked out of the Bifrost which is basically bending Space-Time. Hulk got there the normal way therefore it was only 2 years.

      @trouts4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      I agree, not the best video in terms of visual. Not a big fan of the music choice either, besides Halo. But then again I fundamentally disagree with this guy on this subject. I've always found "old Hulk" to be immensely boring. He shows up and punches some things in a big action scene that's all show and no tell.
      Thor: Ragnarok is my favourite MCU movie for a lot of reasons but also because Hulk is actually interesting in it. The problem with Hulk in the MCU, like he says, is that they hint at an arc and then never give him one. I like Ragnarok because I don't really care about Hulk but I like Banner, and he had space in Ragnarok because there weren't 5 other main protagonists about that needed attention too.

    • @scripteddan
      @scripteddan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@trouts4 I also don't understand why taking the stance that turning Hulk into a "baby" for one film is somehow this massive disservice to the character. The long track of Hulk over the MCU is playing out and his time on Sakaar was one step in that journey. Hulk was becoming selfish, Bruce even says that it felt entirely different from how it did before and I'd imagine before Hulk had to grapple with not having an identity aside from "the monster". It's a core part of his character in Ragnarok, that no one loves him on Earth but here he's a lauded, spoiled child. Maybe they poke more fun at him than they should, but I can't imagine Ruffalo would be THAT interested in playing Hulk the exact same way he has for Avengers 1, 2, and now Ragnarok. I feel like the underlying argument to the entire video is "they changed him" which is fundamentally the opposite of what I want from the MCU films. I want to see the characters in a different light, not just have Ruffalo show up and have a director say, "Okay do what you did in those other movies." That's just boring. Jokes have always been framed around the Hulk in the MCU films, god forbid they make them in a film with a more comedic tone that people generally enjoyed. I've watched all the other Marvelous Scene entries on the playlist and this is the only one I disagree with, not in terms of the scene, but because of his interpretation of the character around the scene.
      And yeah Gubz, my dude, you gotta equalize your music a bit more. It's so loud in the beginning and just after the 7 minute mark. It is overpowering.

    The thing that makes Hulk a compelling character is that it's two people, two people who hate each other more than anything else, and they have to share a body. The Hulk isn't a mask you can put on or take off, he's a whole other being with his own thoughts and feelings. Also he smash the thing and it's cool.

    I love the sympathetic take on how Hulk just wants to stay in control and have a purpose and existence and be loved like on Ragnarok. He tries to keep control over their "body", but not malevolently. In fact it's very similar to how Banner wants to stay in control. He sees Banner as the bad guy keeping him locked away, and only calling on him to use him to solve problems. It's amazing. I do hope the arc is completed with them finding peace with one another, but naturally and not artificially.

    Totally agree, and I think the worst thing about Marvel is the way humor is used. They're afraid their audience will get bored or offtrack if there aren't constant jokes.
    The scenes that dare to be deep and dark and profound are the best.
    Best example would be Doctor Strange, the scene where he's finally a hero, looks up in the mirror and the cape just ruins the tension by twitching. It's like Mads Mikkelsen's evil Guy joking with Strange : sure it's a tad fun but then your antagonist is, himself, a joke. Not someone you fear

      I guess I wanted to see classic hulk, the "final option" bad ass hulk. The one that sends chills down your spine when he finally comes into play. Black Widow dieing should have been what snapped him into a version of the world breaker hulk. My God would that have been as epic of a moment there had ever been in the MCU. To watch Hulk fully take back control from Banner in such a fit of rage that it literally shakes planet Earth... I'm sorry but that would have been absolutely epic.

    • @jameslong8133
      @jameslong8133 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think your missing my point, I am aware of how world breaker hulk comes into existence in the comics. I'm saying Black Widows death in the MCU was a chance to bring a "VERSION" of world breaker hulk into the MCU. It's not supposed to be the same.WBH that comes out of the comics, just an adaption into the cinematic side of things.

  • @modemmack

    Well, that's your opinion. Personally, I love the direct they're taking the Hulk. Hulk getting beat down didn't downgrade how bad ass he is, it showed how much more bad ass Thanos was.

    With Endgame having been out and showing us Professor Hulk, I think people forget why it even happened. In Avengers, Bruce was afraid of showing himself to the world, but came anyways to save it. Bruce was accepted back into society while Hulk was seen as something to pull out when needed to fight. Age of Ultron comes around and Hulk shows us something. He shows remorse for his actions in that one town and he sees the carnage that he made and begins to realize that people won't accept him. He leaves Earth and finds himself on Sakaar, where he is worshipped and loved for two whole years. He then sees the video of Natasha and begins to realize that while everyone on Sakaar loves him, he had genuine friends and loved ones who was willing to stay by his side. That crack allowed Banner to come out. After the events of Ragnarok, Hulk knew he could never go back to what he had. The one thing he did have was that he was the strongest, until Thanos came. Hulk didn't want to come back out only to lose again. He basically lost everything at that point and he didn't know how to deal with it. Even Bruce says that "We are gonna have to figure things out" when Hulk wouldn't come out during the New York fight. Then later on, when Hulk doesn't come out still during the Wakanda fight, Bruce takes over completely to fight their battle. After the snap, he and Hulk had a lot of time to connect with each other. They both know they had to be better because "First Hulk lost, and then Banner lost", as he said to the others when they met up again 5 years later. With the Professor Hulk form, Hulk finally got what he always wanted: to be accepted by others. Sure, he was accepted on Sakaar, but it was true acceptance on Earth where anyone would come to him to meet him. Heck, in a deleted scene, he was shown being a true hero. Instead of cops having their guns pointed at him, they thanked him and were glad he was there to help them. In the end, it was the current Hulk that the world, and the universe, needed to make things right. He's happy now, and while he may be down an arm for now (he did still fight with it, and I would assume that his healing factor may only be going slow due to what caused him the damage. I mean, look at how Thanos and Tony was when they snapped. Thanos probably got lucky to have been alive after doing that second snap), he can still go to the world he now loves and help protect it when needed.

      The Hulk is essentially dead. Bruce is all that's left. Since the hulk is a separate personality, we can assume he is gone for good unless the mcu decide to give him control again. Also, hulk fans were disappointed in how they potrayed the Hulk as more weak and childish as you progressed through the movies. Banner was great, but the hulk as a character was not. Characters like Thor, Iron man and Captain America were excellent.

Just because something works doesn't mean we should do it forever. if you want angsty hulk you'll always have him in the old movies. just because ragnarok changed him doesn't mean it's worse like this, trying new things is good
    edit: watched the rest of the video. sorry, it's really sort of pissing me off when people say something 'used to be better'. You got what you wanted! You have it and you can rewatch it! I think that they're setting up for a character arch when Hulk and Bruce Banner both come to terms with themselves, and have a perfect mutual connection.

    What I love in the Planet Hulk storyline (which Thor: Ragnarok took more from than actual Thor comics), the Hulk and not Banner is the main character. The Hulk sees Banner as a demon that occupies his body. The Hulk is afraid of turning into Banner just as much as Banner is afraid of turning into Hulk. Banner fears the rage and destruction caused by the Hulk, and the Hulk fears the weakness Banner possesses.

    I really liked this analysis and this Hulk scene from Ragnarok is one of my favorite scenes in the MCU. Bruce and Hulk are such tragic figures to me. I don't mind either of them being silly or quippy because I do find that entertaining, but ultimately they are both trapped and both victims of horrific circumstances. When Bruce says he's always angry and talks about his failed suicide attempt, it's clear that his entire existence is a state of suffering where he's trying not to go over the edge. Then in Ragnarok we get to see that Hulk feels similarly, he's caged and hated and feared and his entire existence is that of a prisoner inside someone else's body. Neither get to be happy or whole or free, ever.
    I have PTSD and find Banner quite sympathetic from that perspective too. Just being trapped with overwhelming consequences of something that happened to you and struggling every single moment just to exist in state of torment, let alone trying to lessen or control it in any way. And that kind of experience is so unrelatable that it alienates you from other people and from the compassion that could ultimately make it easier to be less angry. It's truly so sad.
    Professor Hulk as a character is a little goofy, but the idea that Banner and Hulk are able to co-exist is probably the happiest ending that could be hoped for. Again, looking at it from the perspective of a trauma victim, you can't undo the things that have happened to you but it's supposedly possible to have pain but not to have suffering. If Banner can be angry but not enraged, a mutant but not a monster, then that is a best case scenario. Likewise, Hulk is able experience autonomy and people reacting to him with caring. The fact that Banner and Hulk have this found family of the Avengers and have enough internal peace to have silly moments is a really beautiful outcome. I love the taco scene in Endgame because Hulk, this once out-of-control brute, is able to show kindness when other characters without any tremendous baggage were just assholes for no reason-it's really sweet that that's who Banner and Hulk get to be at the end. Everyone who struggles should be so lucky to come out the other side of it one day as a kind person who finds belonging and was not made bitter by their experiences.

    In the comics this Doc Green persona is not a long term solution and eventually his lingering past traumas make him Savage again. I think this is just another hold back for Hulk to be able to shine some other time because the other characters needed their story arcs concluded in Endgame.

    Hulk in Ragnarok is a great Hulk. I loved his acting. His acting spoke louder than words. You can feel his frustration. No one wants him, no one truly likes him not even Banner.

    I love that scene in Ragnarok. It's so good when directors really show their understanding of a character. Hulk is underrated.. so much more than 'smash.' And I'm glad that *spoilers* he found some measure of peace in Endgame through being Professor Hulk.

    I think the point of Hulks change is that he's essentially his own person, and from the first Hulk to the Avengers, he's only really been alive when there's danger, or perceives danger, but after age of Ultron, he's given a lot of time to be alive and learn, so he goes from essentially a raging child that needs a lullaby to calm it, to a toddler who can sort of control his temper, play with other people like Valkyrie, and has actual relationships with people, like befriending Thor and caring about him when Thor leaves. I thought it was a pretty cool and interesting change to the Hulk.

    My first interpretation of Hulk in Ragnarok and Infinity War was about the unhealthy relationship between Hulk and Banner, and how Hulk masked that with jokes and childish behavior, followed by him hiding after failing (losing everything he had on Sakaar). In fact, I really like that the Hulk is like this because it doesnt makes it an unidimensional character, but one that uses a facade to hide what he ultimately feels. I didnt need someone to tell me that, I just felt it right and I know why this happened. See, I know a thing or two about adictive behavior. Not just drug abuse or alcohol, but things in general. Anything can be an escape, and if you dont face your problems, you get involved in bad desicions, and a cycle begins but never ends until you end rock bottom. Thats the transformation scene. Thats what flips the entire Hulk arc on its head. Hulk hiding on Infinity War was just he giving up after he faced his problem and not wanting to solve it, not trying to fix things and work with Bruce. I thing this is an interesting arc, and one that finishes on Endgame. I havent seen the movie but whatever happens there, its the end of the road for Hulk and I would love to see them work together as a team. This Hulk is more than just a child, he feels and understand, he just didnt have an oportunity to be himself and when that happened he didnt know what to do, so became addicted to that.

    You also have to remember Professor Hulk (Doc Green is his real name in the comics) isn't Banner in hulk's body. It's Banner's intelligence put in Hulk's personality as well as his body (and I hope that's what they do in Endgame). In the comics it actually worked out terribly for Banner because Hulk is able to keep him locked away for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time. The raging animosity towards Banner and Hulk was still the same.

    For the reason why Hulk punches himself, the only one that makes any sense at all in my mind is reason 3: to keep himself angry and in control. The other two make literally no sense in the context of the situation.
    Edit: I also agree with your opinions on Captain America. He was really boring at first and he's really interesting and awesome now.
