REVIEW 2024 Suzuki Swift | Modern Tech but Old School Drive

  • Here's my full review of the all-new 2024 Suzuki Swift - a petrol-engined mild-hybrid with a manual transmission and handbrake. It remains practical but also entertaining to drive, despite its meagre performance. In a world of modern cars that remove the driver from the visceral experience of peddling a small car, this remains old school in character despite an astonishing list of standard high-tech safety and driving features. Let me know what you think of it in the comments.

It's almost the last one standing. Crazy to think about it that super minis once ruled the road.

Wow Suzuki have launched a car I actually like. Note three pedals, a proper handbrake lever and a non fancy manual gearbox. Wonder if they will bring a sport one out?
My Aunt had one of the Swifts from the 2005 when they radically changed it to the styling we see on the current swifts today. She enjoyed that car very much and even though she had the diesel one it was pretty quick.

What a great review! What more could a person want out of this car? Old school cool, new school tech (but not overly intrusive or tacked on). Very nice car. Suzuki really got it right, and they clearly respect the Swift name.
Oh, and great job on the drone footage. That really turned out fantastic.

Thank you! But I have to confess the drone footage was supplied by Suzuki 😜

I'm a little torn on this one. I have the 2019 Suzuki Swift SZ5 with the 1Ltr 3 cylinder BoosterJet engine and that delivers around 110 HP, 30 more HP than this generation. I can't help feeling that this difference is going to be be really noticeable. Will probably have a test drive to confirm suspicions. I wished Suzuki had kept the old engine as it is also very economical - I get between 44mpg up to a maximum of around 59 mpg real-world - not as good as the current gen, but still pretty respectable.

Like any manufacturer Suzuki are loathe to upset their existing customer base but have to satisfy modern safety and emission regs so its a mixed bag.
Spec wise its pretty generous wasnt expecting heated seats but having gone there hested wheel st least as an option.
Base cars wheels are not attractive but you can pay to upgrade worth noting thst the old model vase car had nicer looking rims.
I preferred the old models rear door handle but you can see the logic in going conventional.
The modest performance does not surprise as any new design of engine is usually conservatively tuned there may be more to come but likely the hunt for efficiency will take priority.
The interior is a modernised version of what worked well on the old model so little to complain about.
Definitely worth taking a look at if you value the reliability and dealer reputation and if you qualify for a discount through Blue light membership. Love to see a Sport replacement as a Halo model as there are precious few of the ilk any more.

The other end of the technology scale but, I made my own decision to buy a Qashqai ePower somewhat influenced by your review. Unfortunately, these cars are suffering thousands of major component failures which Nissan is treating on an individual basis. I live in Spain and have had to pay a lawyer to represent me against Nissan EU, trying to get them to fix my growling ePower.
Maybe that would be a campaign that you could take up to push Nissan to recall the cars most likely to be affected rather than wait for them to breakdown, goodness knows where?

I have the previous model SZ5 Mild Hybrid with 1.0L 3 cyl Boosterjet Engine which has 109bhp. Got to say very underwhelmed by the new model, it just looks like a facelift of my car. Slightly different at the front, and the tail lamps slightly different as well. Interior is almost identical apart from the larger infotainment screen. Overall the car is not that much different. The main disappointment is the engine only delivering a measly 81bhp, don't get me wrong I love my Swift, but to release a new model almost identical with a lesser powered engine that is so much slower is a backwards step by Suzuki.
BTW having now had a test drive in the new model last week can confirm it is like a snail on valium compared to The 1.0 SZ5 Boosterjet Engine, I was actually shocked at how much slower it was. Again I absolutely love my current Swift as it has everything, but current owners will be massively put off by a ridiculous loss in performance of a so called new model, and many like myself will not purchase this 'clone' of the previous model with a woefully underpowered engine.

It's all about the fun of driving and the power is just a small part of it. This car is good enough for the average driver, and has a lot of security functions the old one doesn't have.

BCG, I know you said you want to try and avoid politics, but what’s your opinion on ULEZ now Londoners have voted to keep it? I’m sure we’ll still see videos on social media of idiots vandalising the cameras but personally I feel that the election should now put a stop to that, as I’ve said it’s kind of like Brexit with me as a remoaner having to live with not being in the EU, something that I have now done, what do you say people, just get a compliant car and get on with our lives or keep on moaning about it?
