Norwegian here, I have met the female vocalist Maria a few times and can probably shed some light: This song is composed of the female lyrics, which are from the Eggja stone found in Norway, inscribed around the time of the fall of the Roman empire, and the english parts are the bands interpretation of the runes on that stone. It's a story of being forced into a conflict you don't want, but also determination to make damn sure you win that conflict.
And also, Wardruna - Helvegen. Find a video with english lyrics as well, so you understand. There's power in music like this. And then Ivar Bjørnson & Einar Selvik - Kvervandi. All of this music is expressing the original, north european/nordic culture, the spiritual beliefs and convictions of the Goths, Saxons, Vikings, Normans, Langobardi, Vandals, The Rus and all the other people who shared a common language and similiar belief system before Empire came disguised as Christianity.

    Per wiki:
Heilung is an experimental folk band of members from Denmark, Norway, and Germany.[1] They do music based on texts of original artifacts from the Iron Age and the Viking Age. They describe their music as "amplified history from early medieval northern Europe".[Heilung means "healing" in German. Heilung is under contract at the label Season of Mist.

    The 'rap'like duel:
What am I supposed to do
If I want to talk about peace and understanding
But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to make you understand that the path you chose leads to downfall
But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to tell you to leave me and my beloved ones in peace
But you only understand the language of the sword
I let the blade do the talking...
So my tongue shall become iron
And my words the mighty roar of war
Revealing my divine anger´s arrow shall strike
All action for the good of all
I see my reflection in your eyes
But my new age has just begun
    The sword is soft
In the fire of the furnace
    It hungers to be hit
And wants to have a hundred sisters
In the coldest state of their existence
    They may dance the maddest
In the morass of the red rain
    Beloved brother enemy
I sing my sword song for you
    The lullaby of obliteration
So I can wake up with a smile
    And bliss in my heart
    And bliss in my heart
    And bliss in my heart
    Coexistence, Conflict, combat
    Devastation, regeneration, transformation
That is the best I can do for you
I see a grey gloom on the horizon
That promises a powerful sun to rise
    To melt away all moons
It will make the old fires of purification
    Look like dying embers

That "rap" duel wasnt rap at all. Its chanting. Allegedly the Germanic peoples of antiquity would often "sing" in a manner similar to this, particularly at the height of a ceremony when the psychoactives kicked in. Its one of the primary reasons the Romans and many other foreigners who met these people thought they were either possessed by demons, half animal(The word "Barbarian" supposedly has some root in the meaning "men who wear the skins of animals") or just batshit crazy, and its one of the reasons the Romans were afraid of them.

FYI, they're somewhat more than just German and Norwegian. Danish musicians are also part of the experience. The language is proto norse. A late germanic dialect hailing from the late iron age to the early viking age. Which is by far, an almost completely dead language. It has zero resemblance with modern day Scandinavian or German languages. There is only one place left where a language similar to this exists. Iceland.

I first saw the Heilung video a few weeks ago and was immediately transfixed. The music has a visceral affect and then factor in the visual appearance of the performers. I found myself transported to a smoke filled building in the midst of a Goddess ritual. I am pagan so that probably helped. :) If you go to the video's page itself there are some excellent comments with info on the probable sources/origins of the music. There are translations of the lyrics and historical information about music like this that has survived centuries. All that discovery the result of seeing the video in You Tube's "recomended for you" algorithm.

Everybody connects this to Vikings at first, because it contains a lot of that "norse" spirit and the Vikings are like the pop stars. But I would rather sort it as native european or Germanic. Before the Roman Empire came and changed everything. Including the spirituality of the continent. The Vikings where the last line of defense against that "Western" spirit. Ancient music, older than Christianity even and native, not imported. I think it´s the drums that speak to something old in us. It´s like a heathen ceremony. And I love it :D

They basically cover northern europe (so from modern day Germany and upwards) from before the viking age and into the viking age. So it's a whole mess of influences from the tribal period of northern Europe. It's not just Germanic and proto Scandinavian either, there's influences from the Lap's and the Rus, the Celts, all sorts of stuff from this period.

Please try "Hamrer Hippyer" at Lifa from Heilung. Its a very long song but it is sooo great.

Saw an sjw on another reaction hating on the group for "appropriating native american culture" i chuckled... calling out people on racial bias and cultural erasure meanwhile forgetting that the "original" european culture got wiped out by the romans who adopted their religion from the first christian who came from the middle east...not to mention the inspiration for this is from the iron age meaning it's as old if not older then most of native american culture...
...the other channel called it out pretty well white people trying to connect to their actual roots tend to get bashed for it since that scene unluckily tends to attract a lot of the more extreme fans of the white supremacy / racist / nationalist ideology as well...

the name is german and means healing and they sing in pre-norsk, norwegian, english and german as i know and they use often old rune poems or texts from the pre to vikings time. all of there songs are meant to bring heeling and peace and their message is that all humans on earth are brothers. their members are norwegian, german and danish i think. their live shows are telling a kind of story. this song for example: the singing part is from an old text and as i know it is about odin healing the broken leg of an horse. the spoken part is about someone starting a fight with someone who never wanted war and rather wants to live in peace but the enemy only understands the language of the sword. very powerful in my opinion

Sooo Castlefest is a renaissance fair/cosplay/music event in Holland. And Heilung is a side project of two members of the band Euzen and their friend a poet/tattoo artist. Significantly heilung means healing in German and that is what this is supposed to be; we're in a forest in the summer listening to music, eating food, performing a ritual burning of the wickerman enjoying being with friends. Then everyone quiets down and sits on the floor. It's gone dark, the birds you hear are actual birds in the trees, fires are burning all around and then this "music" happens and keeps happening. After 5 minutes or 5 hours (I'm not really sure) you wake up from this trance and you feel moved. This is not supposed to be pretty or light or easy, it's primal.

Ok, so Heilung is a German word, which means healing. The band itself is an international band with members from Denmark, Norway & Germany. They chose that name because "The listener is supposed to be left at ease and in a relaxed state after a magical musical journey that is at times turbulent". Heilung brings music based on artefacts dating from the Norhern European Iron Age and Viking age. They call the music "amplified history".
The chorus of Krigsgaldr is based on a poem from a gravestone found in Norway in 1917, so it's old Norse. But because the poem is only partially preserved, they made a phonetical version of the 2nd panel (they found 3 on the site). Researchers think it's related to a funeral. The poem should ensure safe passage to the afterlife.

I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 10,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and this year they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. I hope this review helps you to understand a bit the context of this musical group. I recommend this video of her concert.

Wow you guys are way off the beaten path! I love this band, and they are planning to come to the US!
The costumes of the two main singers were very Siberian Shaman. And you saw the obvious Viking motif. The music is very Germanic (Early northern Europe and Scandinavia) and Scandinavian inspired, mostly pre Viking times. It's a reminder that we ALL have roots in traditional, tribal, hunter gatherer, animistic, pagan culture.
Kings, dynasties, religions, empires have routed humanities course away from nature and each other, and our deep connection with all that is the universe.
The vibe of the music is very healing combined with some agression, perhaps with a dire message for humanity. Change course or face the consequence.

The lyrics to this song are one of the possible readings of the runes on the Eggja Stone; a 7th Century gravestone found in Norway in 1917. There are several competing interpretations of the carvings but it's generally accepted that they describe some kind of warding for the grave and a funeral ritual.
You should definitely check out "Fylgija Ear / Futhorck", the lyrics for which are the Anglo-Saxon rune poem, and "Hamrer Hippyer", the lyrics for which come from an magic spell in a text called the Second Merseburg Charm, in which Odin heals Baldr's horse's leg with the spell. The Merseburg Charms were discovered in 1841 among the pages of a religious manuscript from the 8th Century and are the only written record of germanic paganism written in Old High German.

The influences precede viking times and are also heavily tied into mainland Europe (Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, northern France) and even the UK. So, proto-Germanic, like others said, is pretty precise. That does still include Old Norse elements like the Allfather, or Odin/Wodan (fun fact, Odin, Thor and Freyja can be found in "Wednesday"/"Thursday"/"Friday", just to show you how proto-Germanic share the same root with the English we speak today).
Some members are prominent and well-known folk artists in Europe, but here they have banded together to do this incredibly unique thing. The music is European (nothing Indian there, I think), but do borrow heavily from Eastern/Indo European styles. One of the singers always wears a Mongolian shaman garb and also performs some throat singing techniques. It is thought that the old Norse also included throat singing, as vikings eventually emerged even into Asia to trade and picked up some habits along the way.
Sorry to go off on a tangent here :) Pretty cool that you do this.
If you're in the mood for some more, I heavily recommend:
    - Wardruna, also heard in "Vikings", except for the intro song, that's Fever Ray
    - Corvus Corax
    - Skàld
    - Danheim (viking trance music, I swear)
    - Garmarna
    - Eivor, also heard in "The Last Kingdom"
I swear, some of this music tickles my third eye, or something.

But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to make you understand that the path you chose leads to downfall.
But you only understand the language of the sword

But you only understand the language of the sword
I let the blade do the talking...
So my tongue shall become iron

Revealing my divine anger´s arrow shall strike
All action for the good of all
I see my reflection in your eyes
But my new age has just begun.
    The sword is soft
In the fire of the furnace
    It hungers to be hit
And wants to have a hundred sisters
In the coldest state of their existence
    They may dance the maddest
In the morass of the red rain.
    Beloved brother enemy
I sing my sword song for you
    The lullaby of obliteration
So I can wake up with a smile'
