This was their first ever live concert at "Castlefest" in 2017. They are phenomenal live, saw them last year. Try one of their most recent Rituals. "Anoana" live with their updated set, beautiful!
Thats the reason the audience isn't to involved i think, they're probably all experiencing this for the first time. I got to see Heilung live in Stockholm last tour, and was surprised how many people knew every single word and sang along. It's really remarkable that their first performance was this good.
Maria Franz is the female vocalist and she has an incredible voice.
As far as the audience goes, having been at similar concerts, there are songs like this where it becomes mesmerizing and can make a person just stand there and try to absorb it.
Music like this speaks to the tribal state of mind in us! To me this is performance art.
Maybe also because indeed it was their first performance, people didn't know them or their music and must have been quite stunned by it.

Lifa means "Live" and is the title of the album they put out of this, their first performance. In Madijan is the name of the song

Saw them live last week with Eivor opening. Quite an experience. The audience is mostly entranced during the songs, and not reacting as much until a break. Regarding the fire comment, I did receive this before the show: 'This ritual will feature open flames, nudity, incense smoke, and Viking weapons' so you're not wrong :)
Eivør and Heilung together is pure extasy.

I just saw them at Red Rocks amphitheater in Colorado in the US. They said it was their last show in America “for the foreseeable future”. It was a full “pink” moon and it was… transcendental. It was beyond my expectations. I highly recommend BOTH the live and official videos for “Ananoa” and the Lifa at Castlefest (same show you just watched) version of the song “Krigsgaldr”.

I timed a holiday around seeing Heilung headline a festival on a farm in England. They were incredible. TH-cam is great, but it doesn’t convey how bone-shaking the drums are. The next day the people in the neighbouring village were asking about that noise coming over the hills (probably thought they were about to get pillaged.)
They are doing two shows in New Zealand this year. Unfortunately nowhere near me, but of course I will travel to see them here.
The crowd in some bits are stunned like a mullet in places, chanting in others and jumping up and down in other parts when I saw them. I was standing in awe for parts I am sure.
Like you said it’s a ritual and seeing it live is something else.

Heilung don´t play concerts... they perform rituals! If you ever have the opportunity to see one of it: just go! Even travel! Totally worth every single kilometer. Went to three rituals since 2022 and am looking forward to one later this year.
The last one was in a (unfortunately modern) amphitheater here in Germany in pouring rain. Nobody cared!
this performance at LIFA will forever melt our brains. her vocals are a recreation of a live single take in the recording studio while she was freestyling with her voice. this song went global with the release of Hellblade II video game.
I saw them perform a ritual last year, words don't do justice to just how entrancing and amazing they are live - I've been going to gigs for over 30 years and seen hundreds upon hundreds of bands, but they are by far the best I've seen. If you get the chance to see a ritual def take it!
It is in fact a ritual. From start to finish. See them in person if you ever can. It can change your life if you let it. Ancient lyrics and their “amplified history” is amazing.
Heilung means healing in German, their rituals are to heal, all their songs from lifa are amazing. You should check them out if you like.

They are reciting the Elder Futhark ( Runes )
I think other performances of theirs that you'd really enjoy are Anoana (LIFA Lynn Dain) and Alfadhirhaiti (LIFA) - though all of their live stuff is fantastic, on a sliding scale between music and performance art.

What Maria is doing is called kullning an ancient form of herd calling still used here in Norway, Sweden to with roots back to the Viking age and probably even older.
And Heilung doesnt have concerts they have rituals
1 does not simply pause or talk during Maria's solo
I attended Heilung's ritual in LA in December and at Red Rocks on April 23; most of the attendees stand throughout.

When korn was playing, the entire crowd was one giant moshpit, you could not stand on one spot even if you tried...
Then Heilung came on stage and everyone was dead scilebt in trance until all heart beats were synchronized and calibrated.
And then we had an orgy.
Just kidding but we might as well have, that was crazy...

Thanks for a great reaction to this amazing band. If you enjoyed this one I recommend their performance of "Othan" from the same ritual. Another great one is "Hamrer Hippyer" or "Fylgija Ear / Futhorck", also from this ritual. A third recommend is either the official music video of "Anoana" or the live version which is just mindblowing "Anoana LIVE | LIFA Llyn Dain". "Alfadhirhaiti" is also fantastic. Honestly you can't go wrong with any song as they are all just so good. the first 3 songs I mentioned have however been reacted to a bit less so those would be cool.
In the best of all worlds both versions of "Anoana " should be watched back to back. MV for context and then the live version which is such a great performance. Saw them live last year.

Heyo, greetings from the UK. Just stumbled across your channel and love it, however, a couple of notable absences in your repertoire currently. First off, Aurora. Any song by her is amazing, you really can't go wrong. Secondly, The Hu, I recommend starting with Wolf Totem and then going with anything else. Again all their songs are great. Third, Wardruna. Similar kind of vibes to this, just with more actual singing and not just primal rituals. Nothing wrong with Heilung though, I love them too. Fourth, Kalandra. Any song is great, but a good starter would be Brave New World. Gives a good idea of what the band is like and what sort of thing they're capable / most comfortable with. Also, Maria Franz, the female lead of Heilung has done some solo stuff. Ulvetime (Hour of the Wolf) is the most popular one and is really good. She has such amazing range. Also, be sure to check out SKÁLD. Very cool Icelandic / Old Norse band. Last but by no means least, we have Eivør Palsdottir (Usually just goes by Eivør) She has such a unique way of singing and can do some wild things with her breath.
