      On the side of the bulb 1 prong is completely round the other is squared on the bottom.which prong goes in first. this is in the T12 bulb.

    Having done a work-study job while in college which had me relamping all fluorescent lamp bulbs in my city (we replaced 40W tubes to 34W, a 15% energy savings which also was partially-incentivized by the local electric company), I’d only add when putting in a new tube, make sure its fully-seated inside the fixture terminals on both sides by SLIGHTLY pulling downwards on the ends so it “clicks” into place (CAREFUL: don’t break the tube!).
    This helps ensure the two pins on each end of tube make maximal contact with the recessed holder, thus avoiding “hot spots” in the connections (so although the tube may light up as expected, the reduced contact area may lead to higher resistance as oxidation builds up, reducing the life of the new bulb(s) & leading to premature failure).

      I am torn between the plug and play LED bulb replacements or the fixture like you are talking about with integrated LEDs. If the integrated LEDs don't fail for 10 years probably not a bad option. I just hope these integrated LED fixtures don't start dropping out or it will be a pain needing to swap out the fixtures when the lights go out.

      Why doesn’t the light bulb work fully

    • @rs12official
      @rs12official 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@janehempfing8662 There are a few different reasons that fluorescent tubes fail:
      - One or both of the filaments in a tube are blown off or burned away, meaning that the filaments can no longer be heated, and the tube won’t start.
      - The emissive coating on the filaments has evaporated off, meaning the filaments can no longer start the tube.
      - The tube has lost vacuum, meaning that air has contaminated the internal atmosphere of the tube, and the tube won’t start.

    Thank you. I hadn't a clue on how to remove the bulbs. Mine don't give the measurement, but I can figure that out. What I can not figure out is what to do with old fluorescent light tubes. You cannot just throw them out. We have another dead set in the basement collecting dust because we didn't know how to dispose of them, and that was probably 10-15 years ago. I'm wishing my late husband had never put this fixture up. Lowes only takes compact bulbs, yet ironically, Lowes is where I have to go to buy replacement tubes. I live in a rural area; I'd be willing to ship them to a recycler, but where?

    Hard to believe that fluorescent fixtures have been with us for over 80 years now. I remember when I was in grade school about 50 years ago when they replaced the incandescent fixtures (the cool retro "Saturn Ring" type that used partially-silvered bulbs) with ones very similar to what is shown in the video. I can also recall cleaning eight-foot fluorescent fixtures from the early 1940s many years ago; the diffusers were GLASS and very heavy but IMO quite attractive for their day. They were made by Columbia Fixture Company somewhere in Eastern Washington.
    Looks like it is finally about time to replace the bulbs in my one fluorescent fixture with drop-in LED replacements since the latter's lumens per watt and longer life are making it more appealing.

      @@EverydayHomeRepairs I agree. The LED bulbs will also help reduce landfill burden in the long term, which is a good thing.

    • @AlexanderCrump
      @AlexanderCrump 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those Saturn ring hanging pendants were awesome. We had them in our school in the '70s. They each took a 300W Duro-Test mogul base silver bowl bulb. There were 6 of these fixtures per classroom, plus some recessed fixtures along one side of the room. These provided wonderful shadow-free light bounced off the white ceiling. Lots of power draw (and unwanted heat) for the amount of light received, but those were state-of-the-art at the time the school was built around 1970.
      As incandescent lighting becomes rarer and rarer, I relish seeing it whenever I do come across it.

    My mom lives in an apartment complex and her kitchen light is the same type of affair...a four-lamp, F40T12 fixture. When she first moved in, the light worked, but failed shortly after. I changed all the bulbs. Just a few months later, it failed once again. I went to Home Depot and bought two new electronic rapid start T12 ballasts and swapped them with the old magnetic ones that were burning the bulbs out too soon. Put some new bulbs in and VOILA! She hasn't had a burnout in a few years now.

    Great video, and very well explained. However, I would not mix different color temperatures of fluorescent tubes in the same fixture. The old tubes were cool white while the new ones are daylight. Using cool white tubes to replace the old tubes would had looked better, but otherwise great job! Also, be careful when breaking a fluorescent tube. Fluorescent tubes contain mercury, which is toxic if inhaled.

    On my flush fixture on my drop ceiling I could not get enough room to get the bulb into position. I then noticed a slot at the end of the housing. I inserted the two pins at the end of the bulb into the slot and this gave me clearance to swing the bulb to the sockets. That slot was there for a reason.

    Had no idea they even made plug-and-play versions of the LED replacements! The ones that require rewiring and/or removal of the ballast are okay too, but the extra steps along with the cost of the individual bulbs probably make a whole-fixture replacement more economical. Plug and plays are definitely a win for the average homeowner who might want to convert to LED, but may not be comfortable with rewiring or replacing a fixture themselves.

      Yeah, I think they have progressed the designs over the past 2-3 years. Looks like most stores are switching more and more stock into the LED plug and play lights.

      They have been around a few years and there were two types, ones you use with the ballast and ones without the ballast, both were about 3-4 times the cost of regular T8 bulbs.

    very nice tutorial! I've had my experiences with these fixutes and the drop ceiling units are the worst to work on!

      Oh man, much tougher for sure. I have them in 1 of my rentals and it is an order of operations to get the bulbs in and out.

      @@EverydayHomeRepairs do you have any tips or tricks for removing and replacing the bulbs?

    • @EverydayHomeRepairs
      @EverydayHomeRepairs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adrianfedczak330 I tried sharing all the tips I have in the video. Is your light fixture in a drop ceiling? If so, the lip around the fixture can make removing the bulbs even a little more challenging.
