Ultimate REAL vs FAKE Disney Pin Comparison

  • Buckle up, I've put together an extremely comprehensive comparison of 10 real vs fake Hidden Mickey pins. I have an authentic and a fake version of each pin from the Past Attractions and Resort Hidden Mickeys Hidden Mickey pins. By comparing a real version and a fake version of each pin, I show all the different things that you should look for when trying to figure out if a pin is authentic. Your best bet is to always find an authentic pin to compare. In general, the fake pins are poorer quality, made of cheaper, lighter metal. You can often feel the difference between pins as much as you can see it. At the end, I also quickly go over some of the newer Hidden Mickey pins--what to look for with those and the exceptions you may find.

    *Hopefully this is helpful to see direct comparison of real vs fake pins!* The number one best way to know if a pin is fake or not is to be able to compare it to what a real one looks like. Over time, you get a much better eye for what to look for!

    Hi Emily. This was very helpful to see them side by side. In looking at some of the fakes, not all of them, but some of them had coloring that seemed brighter than the real ones. I could have actually selected the fake in error just because of that. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in this.

    So, a database of real and fake side-by-sides would be ideal. Hope someone with the time, inclination, and perhaps an entrepreneurial gene will see the need, vis a vis, market for it, and sort out a way to offer such a database in a way that they can be compensated for their time, talent, and initiative.

    • @MagicallyEmily
      @MagicallyEmily  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s probably thousands of pins that have been faked over the years, so unfortunately that’d be impossible!

    • @dmsolis2435
      @dmsolis2435 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MagicallyEmily Admittedly. But that's what they said about an international database for cancer illnesses and treatments when my colleague wished for one because his daughter had a rare malignancy, and the treatment they gave her in the States rendered her unsuitable for the more successful treatment he and his wife took her to find in Tokyo. Of course, a pin trading database of real and their fake un-twins would be substantially less value-adding (try telling that to the most ardent pin traders) than the illness and treatment databases that now exist, with enough interest and motivation, a Real-and-Fake database that would be at least as comprehensive as the one that's been started at PinPics might be achieved. So, that's not very comprehensive (I'm not knocking PinPics, it's a daunting task with new pins and new fakes coming out in droves almost daily), but it's a start. Would I build it? No. Would you? No. But someone may get a solid one started...or perhaps someone somewhere already has. Wishfully thinking.

    One thing I am confused about is that I was told by a cast member who was trained specifically to deal with pins and “fake pins” that there isn’t really any fake pins that they are pins that were made from an actual Disney mold and Disney factory but that they were made from a mold that was supposed to be discarded because of too much use. That instead of throwing it out they kept using it for a little bit longer.

    Love this video! I hope Disney continues to make it harder and harder to fake pins, and eventually weed them out all together 🤞🏼 I’ve also seen hidden Mickeys and other scrappers with the Mickey waffle where part of the waffle is kind of stippled, but the actual Mickey is the regular metal. Anyone know what I’m talking about? I don’t think I’ve seen it on authentics :)

    Is there anywhere to look up pics of the backs of authentic pins? I have a couple of pins that I got before I knew to watch out for counterfeits and while I can't see anything weird about the front of the pin, I still worry. One in particular doesn't have any nubs. I dont know if that's an automatic disqualifier or not. It would really help if pin pics users would put both sides of their pins

    • @MagicallyEmily

    The problem with this is if we could get a real one to compare the game with is if we have a real one we wouldn't get a fake to compare it with in the first place. Plus on pin boards we can't compare how thick or thin metal is or how big the back nuds are. Or the waffle backs. Yes thank you once we trade for the pin we can tell the backs. Also a cast member told me some authentic pins don't have nuds. Thanks for all your info .
