In Switzerland, at the beginning of autumn, a beautiful living tradition takes place all over the country: Alpabzug, the alpine descent of cows, cattle, goats, and other farm animals. Between September and October, many Swiss farmers are busy returning their animals from the mountain pastures. After spending the summer grazing on meadows with fresh herbs, the bovines will be spending their winters in the barn.
Although a sort of mundane agricultural event, the Swiss turn these alpine descents into an opportunity to praise the beloved cows. As you have probably figured out, the Swiss love their cows. They even had a (very emotional) vote recently on whether cows should have the right to keep their horns. Truly, cows occupy an important place in the hearts of the Swiss and in their culture.
Through videos or photos, you might have observed Swiss cows enjoying their lives in the mountains. By decorating and dressing them up with the biggest bells, flowers, greenery, herbs, and flags, the farmers showcase their beauty and agricultural achievements. The rhythmic sound of the cowbells accompanying the procession has a calming effect. You cannot help smiling from the aesthetic satisfaction when seeing the animals, and you might even say "wie hübsch!" - "how pretty!"
If you have not yet fallen in love with cows while travelling and/or living in Switzerland, you surely will while experiencing the return of cows. :-)

My family comes to USA from Switzerland and I go back as much as I can. I love the cows! In all the small country towns you can hear this beautiful sound and see these amazing animals.
Thank you so much for this. In New Zealand. My child just found my cow horn instrument from Jungfraujoch, and wants to play with it. So I told him the story of how I stayed in Switzerland one time and the beautiful sound of the cows roaming the paddocks. This video was the first one I found, and funnily enough I stayed in Lauterbrunnen.

Love the idea of a cow festival , sorry that some of the vehicles seem to go too fast near them . I agree that cows are lovely animals , their milk and cheese must taste great after eating all those wild flowers .

It’s an age old tradition. If it had any significant known impact, the bells would have been discontinued.

People don’t even let the cows to be at peace with those huge bells tied around its neck
They shouldn't let the cars go by. That can be dangerous for the cows !!!!! A tradition has to be followed for centuries so that it's never forgotten. Why not asking UNESCO to immortalize that as a world culture fact?
Cows are very stoic. Horses OTOH get spooked very easily by anything. (There is this great video on TH-cam of a horse refusing to walk down a road in the middle of which there sits a... bunny rabbit. The rabbit _finally_ leaves and only then the horse walks.) As for the cows and UNESCO, it's probably best to keep it as organic, real, and unofficial as possible. Otherwise it will become a drag and a museum piece which is the opposite of the spirit here.

@Louis, at 0:46 one can see a special traffic sign board placed on the road. Drivers remain "extra" cautious on such occasions...

Sorry for those cows which have the heavy huge metal bells on their necks, I don't think they are able to bend down to eat!!! They look skinny too!!! I don's see any fun!!! They are abused by their farmers.

These cows are valued beyond belief. They are a healthy weight, taking part in a festival that goes back 1000 years. To the Swiss they aren't pets or property, they are co-workers. RESPECT.
The bells are deafening. Imagine the insanity of having to wear thise big heavy bells. Why not just strap a GPS tracker and strap thise bells to a water trough truck for them all to follow.
