These cows end up slaughtered anyway, while cultural traditions can be respected- there should be healthy skepticism in turn to see if it's entirely right viewed from all sides. Cows & humans seem to have an entangled history since domestication, extremely so in India. Maybe their happiness also affects the meat 🍖 quality.
I´m from Austria (Vienna) and my grandmother is from Tyrol! Almabtrieb ist such a beautiful tradition :D It´s always nice seeing a documentary about something in my home country
Oh, if life could only be like this for everyone. Everyone has a home, a garden, farm animals and everyone helps their neighbors. No one is hungry, homeless and all rely on GOD and give thanks to HIM for peace, the beautiful world and life. Soon....very soon....
Maybe not? I read one story which said methane farts are mainly a problem in feedlots.cows are stuffed with grain instead of eating wild grass and hay.
Alps mountains always remind me of the mountains songs in the old cartoons🥰 I am sure the chocolate and cheese that will be made with those cow's milk; will be the best and delicious 😋, how wonderful to see those farmers look very proud and happy with their cows, thanks DW team for this wonderful documentary ❤️🥰🙋♀️
I've had the privilege and honor of working with cows in the Emmental. Many similar traditions. My job has always been grooming, and I just love it. The cows love it, and it's such a pleasure to make them happy. If you are worried about the state of the animals, imo, that's just batshit crazy. Put your energy into the industrial farms (animal or vegetable), that's where soul has been lost. If you don't understand that every single being on earth lives by the death of something else, then it's time to learn, and that the real secret is to RESPECT your food source.
My grandparents were from Austria. My grabdma herded cows to the alps and back. They immigrated and had cows in America. They milked 3 cows at 4:30 a.m. They respected ALL the farm animals. When the 3 cows got old and dry, my grandma did not want them killed because they had provided milk, butter and calves all their lives. i call that respect.
Holy Cow Mother.... If a person is able to attract a cow towards himself by music from her free herd, then she can fulfill his one wish, for sure. Cow is the representation of Mother Earth.
Cows are the mother of the earth providing people with milk, butter, yogurt, cheese, cow manuer for fertilizer, the urine is used to kill bugs. Then people eat them and we have leather. Thank you for your service.
This was very interesting to see. I enjoy the different cultures of countries, and I have the utmost respect for what they do. The cows all looked very healthy and well taken care. People who don't live there are going to talk and as usual it's all nonsense. Enjoy and respect.
A wonderful documentary coverage about a nice tradition 👍🏻 about a population that they appreciate existence of cows 🐄 as enjoying occasion for themselves and cows 🐄..also as economy source ..interesting video..DW always introduces a wonderful videos at least has Generals intellectuals 👏🏻 interesting
it makes me sad to hear that animal rights activists dare to criticise this beautiful tradition, don't get me wrong, those activists are very important but in this case it's just too much. these are obviously the happiest cows in all of the world, they go up and down huge grassfields every day to eat all the fresh herbs, they get to sleep under the starlight, they are healthy and strong. each and everyone even has a name and more importantly the farmer remembers all of them! And one day a year they have to go down the mountain so they can spend the winter months in the warm and cozy barn in the village. On that day the farmers proudly present their cows by decorating them, to show the people of the village how truly loved and treasured they are. of course they will be exhausted, but everyone who ever went hiking for a day knows the feeling when coming home after an exhausting hikingday, to finally lay down and rest, its the best feeling in the world. and i'm sure it's just the same for these beautiful cows. these are truly happy cows, i know it because i was born and raised in tyrol and got to spend my childhood summers on the mountains with the cows, where my father walked around the fields and mountains everyday, for hours, to count them, to make sure every single one of them was doing well. i am forever grateful to be raised here. And i'm NOT 60 years old and this was very long ago. no. i am 20 years young and these traditions are still very much alive, it's beautiful.❤
Cows naturally live to around 20-25 years old. When are these cows slaughtered? It wouldn't be economically viable to keep cows who aren't producing enough milk as they age. Also, the calves are removed from their mothers so that humans can drink their milk. Where are the male calves? What happens to them? Just because this is traditional, doesn't make it moral or ethical. Also, they're celebrating the cows coming down, while eating cow. Cognitive dissonance.
Important information left out: When do the cows become pregnant ??? Approximately when are the calves born ??? How long do the calves stay with their mom ???
Well, the cattle drives in Australia, Victoria's High Country summer pastures back down for winter are a bit different. They are not dairy cows and their numbers are probably in the thousands.
That bell might be heavy for an untrained human keyboard warrior, but these cows are basically professional athletes. A cow weighs around 700kg, 5kg of decoration is nothing for them to worry about. Do you protest when people on bikes and motorcycles have to wear an ugly and heavy helmet too?
Maybe jealous that she would get bored and tired after 5km of walking, and would need a break for protesting after 10km, so of course seeing a cow just walking 14km is not to be tolerated... 😆
how dare you criticize them. did you see how much love and respect these farmers had for their cows? only one day a year they want to decorate their cows for the whole town to see how loved and beautiful they are. these are the happiest cows in the world!
A cow that’s been on the alp for 6 months and has to walk down the mountain gets tortured, just because she’s wearing a bell?! 😂😂 this is also for their safety,as they get lost,or,have you heard of animals like wolves or jackals, maybe?! At night they are wearing much lighter bells,or none .those seen in the documentary are just for festivities, and weigh around 3-5 kg. We also have the so-called alpabzug in several cantons /provinces in Switzerland, and there is almost nothing more moving or beautiful .‘these animals live very healthy and are indeed happy animals .you can tell by their mood,no joke . All of them have a name, like obviously all of them have a unique and gentle soul . The children in Congo who dig out the cobalt for airplane engines or for the Tesla battery carry a much harder load .not just once a year for 14km,but 7 days a week, until they die from sickness and exhaustion. I’ve seen both scenarios, and came to the conclusion that a child in Congo working for your comfortable life would be better off being born as a cow in the alps. I hope that explains enough for now.
I just love DW documentaries! They range from joyous fun to severely somber. I learn something in every one. Wonderful!
Don't forget the racist and seksist ones
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!

"You always want to be where the cows are happy..." Look at these gorgeous, healthy animals. It makes total sense to me.
Cows do look healthier than animal right activists, maybe we should herd those activists more, so they'll be as healthy as the cow.
7:36 i am an exception

I've seen once in a real time and I was so speechless to see how beautiful this is.
LOVE THIS. MY computer screen saver is a young boy walking alongside the cows in the mountain parade. ♥️
Such traditions should be promoted
Yes they should beautiful traditions like these need to be protected by leftist wokesters like the American Karen in the video

I wish me and mummy would go visit my ancestors in the Alps because I really really love cows🥰

Love most of your docs. There are critics everywhere for everything. I watch an Iowa dairy farmer and learn so much.

This is indian tradition called bail pola ...Its celebrated in maharashtra carnataka , goa and more states...
Those traditions are similar so it seems, but this is not an Indian tradition, but an Austrian/Swiss/alpine tradition

Important information left out: When do the cows become pregnant ??? Approximately when are the calves born ??? How long do the calves stay with their mom ???
Probably artificial insemination. Farmers can buy bull semen , and the process is relatively simple . Easier than keeping a bull

Cows are underrated in cute department.
Why the bell around my neck got to be so damn big?

Are they speaking Swiss German or a Tyrol-ion dialect???
tyrolean dialect. this one isn't that far from just regular german
I thought it was a Swiss tradition, I guess it’s an Alpine thing 😊
I need some milk......
Would animal rights activists really demand the cows to be transported by truck? Then migrating birds should be transported by plane.
the funny thing is the cows walk 14kilometers, i take 9kilometer walks with my dog no problem. rly 14kilometers is nothing if you think about it.
Enjoy while you can!
The rumor has it that little Greta is not happy about this.

Greta has no power here. Little, entitled brats that've never even seen a cow in real life are more of a big city phenomenon.
Who, me? I love cows😍
Cows hike all day long in pasture or in the Alps. I doubt that 14 kilometers even faze these cows.
Where is PETA now? ?
No!!!

cruelty to wear those huge loud bells . stop this practice !!!
says somebody from the US were they make rodeos, declaw cats, debark dogs and shit. the bells are only on them for a few hours.
how dare you criticize them. did you see how much love and respect these farmers had for their cows? only one day a year they want to decorate their cows for the whole town to see how loved and beautiful they are. these are the happiest cows in the world!
