    Loved your video. (Especially when you sprung the nib!) Really great to see your process, and how you can fix little problems. A real life video that shows "railroading" happens to the best. I am just starting out at 59 (again) and never knew why I couldn't use my nibs... No TH-cam to watch will free tutorials. What an age we live in! ☮

    I was almost going crazy because of these nibs.Well, I am a beginner so don't know the hints. I always blamed the nibs and the ink, then paper, at last myself. But now i found out what's the problem is called "encouragement point" ! Thank you so much! Your calligraphy looks really pretty and charming, inspiring the community so much, I believe...

    You can also use a wire brush to gently clean off rust as soon as it begins and extend the life of the nib. And oil it back up if your gonna store it without use for a while much like emptying a pen that won't be used for a while....little preparation and care here and there goes a very long way. I love your work and hope to be that smooth and effortless one day as well!!!

    I experience the same thing with my new Gillot 303 nib despite it has been cleaned and prepped with various methods (toothpaste, pen cleaner, flame/match method). It is really kinda annoying to see the ink creeping upwards instead of downwards when you apply pressure to the nib. I will try the tips you shared.

    This is the most helpful video I've seen yet having to do with fountain pens or dip pens. I had thought what I needed was a quality fountain pen to do the calligraphy I've been wanting to learn and this video has convinced me to invest in dip pens. I have a couple and have had trouble starting, now I know why. I have bought new calligraphy sets at garage sales and all of them are cartridge and now I know it isn't what I really want. I even bought one set that looks like dip but there are cartridge inks included and I don't know where to install them! I am soooo novice. I'm hoping the book can shed some light! I just subscribed as I know I will learn a lot from your videos. Thank you so much. I hate when I see people type mean things about your videos. I'm glad you don't even acknowledge their comments from what I have seen. I have to see how I can get my hands on some of these nibs and the oblique holder and I'm hoping they aren't too expensive. Hugs, I'll be visiting your videos often. Thank you so much for taking your valuable time to share with us on TH-cam!

    • @OpenInkStand
      @OpenInkStand  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Garage sales will rarely yield good dip pens, they're usually rusty, damaged etc. It's best to just buy them new from paperinkarts.com or johnnealbooks.com. It is not expensive. They do not come with cartridges, you will have to keep dipping to replenish the ink. But it is not a hindrance at all. Good luck and have fun with your practice! Kind comments like yours are worth 100 of the mean comments :)

      Kevin Joric Apolonio Tell me about it, it's a very frustrating nib. Someone also told me that if you soak it in iron gall for a few hours, it should write better. I havent tried that though..

    • @Lyander25
      @Lyander25 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just remembered that I had some small measure of luck taking a buffing board to that last mm of underside. Since the hydrophobic coating there seems more resistant than elsewhere, polishing it off helped. Of course, since I wasn't much experienced with stuff like that yet, it ended up becoming a bit scratchy.
      ... Maybe I should try again :/

    • @OpenInkStand
      @OpenInkStand  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Joric Apolonio I did the same, and yes it got really scratchy. It is just a matter of getting used to the nib...

    lovely Video Schin!!and
    Seen the way how the nib has gone but with a little efforts you could bring the both tines closer by forcing opposite ways.
    For gaining the original closer setting by forcing it needs a little practice. Also it is very tricky and still it not the best point you have until you try several times.

    I don't have experience with this kind of nib but it looks like its the meniscus of the water/ink that's preventing the ink from flowing downwards. You can "break" the meniscus by adding a very tiny amount of soap to the ink, at least this is what we do in film photography to make the water roll of the film when it dries.

    This looks like a classic case of something called baby's bottom, a somewhat common problem with new nibs in fountain pens. That fact that it will write as long as you start in a wet spot on the paper tells me this is the problem. This means the nib ink channel is not touching the paper. It has to for any nib to work right. Using a bit of micro mesh will fix the problem quickly. There are plenty of videos on how to fix this.

    • @OpenInkStand
      @OpenInkStand  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ralphw3 This is very good information, and I didn't know FPs have the same problem. Thanks, I'll try using micro mesh.

    • @jyeox
      @jyeox 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think its more of the nib being too flexible. Whenever ink tries to flow, the mere pressure of normal writing spreads the tines so it cant write. Unlike fountain pens that have ink reservoirs and feeds that supply the nib with ink

    • @ralphw3
      @ralphw3 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The Pen Show It could be because of that but I don't think so. Looking at the video again, the ink never rests by the tip. Take a close look - you see some white space between the ink and the tip before she touches the paper. The ink as to be at the tip otherwise hard starts happen - especially on a fine tip nib. I didn't see this the first time. That means the tines are too far apart at the tip. Doing a bit of delicate work on the tines would fix the problem. If the tines are closer together the ink will completely fill the channel.

    • @feanaaro8652
      @feanaaro8652 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @rascalwind
      @rascalwind ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OpenInkStand Did you find a solution to the problem. Was thinking they may have some nickle or other alloy that they use in the steel that is causing the problem. If the acetone or nail polish remover didn't work you could try buff it with some 000 steel wool. The acetone should remove the oils on the surface of the steel. The steel wool could rough the surface enough to allow the inks surface tension to hold. That would take the surface scale off. The leaving it iron gaul and allowing it to sit for a days may be removing the scale from the steel enough for it to grab the ink. Heating it and a little cider vinegar would take the scale off if the acetone/nail polish didn't. The iron gaul may be acidic and pitting the steel just enough to keep the inks surface tension from working.

    I don't like these overly extravagant letters. I appreciate your work but find it too much and too hard to read which defeats the whole pleasure of reading beautifully written words

      Dr Frankenstein only capital letters are so elaborate . It is not for an everyday writing indeed .

      +OpenInkStand Art & Calligraphy Your nails don't bother me as much as the background noise. It sounds like you made the video in the bathroom while someone is taking a shower.

      When she starts talking and moving that pen, it is completely mesmerizing. That noise in the background is white noise, completely neutral, and frankly I think it helps me focus on what's important.
