  • 2002 was a time. This album may have been the quintessential soundtrack for people who swore that no one understood them, said repeatedly that “it wasn’t a phase”, or were just going through a lot at one time. Regardless of my opinion, there’s a reason this band took the world by storm.

The only decent tracks to me are Early Sunsets, Romance (nice intro) and Demolition Lovers but even those tracks I wouldn't care if I never heard them again. And the rest of the album is just bad imo. If you like it, that's fine. Just my opinion.

I don't blame you for not liking the production, everyone knows the production sucks lol. It was recorded in a recording studio of a friends mom's basement. Many of the songs were wrote hours before recording. Btw, skylines and turnistalls was wrote about Gerards experience witnessing 9/11 it was their very first song.

This channel has become one of my favorite reaction/critique channels on TH-cam. I love that while you are critical of certain things, its always from a good place in your heart. I'll admit, I'm a huge MCR fan, and when I saw you were listening to this album, my first reaction was "Uh oh. I really dont think he's gonna like this one." It has taken me several listen throughs to get used to the raw sound of it. Sometimes I'm in the mood for it. Other times I just want the happy dance party sounds of Danger Days.
I know you're doing Conventional Weapons next. That is the album they scrapped that was recorded between Black Parade & Danger Days. Of the tracks on it, I think you'll enjoy The World is Ugly the most. Also, The Light Behind Your Eyes was written for his daughter(so I've been told), but it's a tear jerker even if you dont know that info.
I didn't mean to write a novel, but I hope you find some tracks on CW that you will go back to. If not, you gave it a fair shot and that's something not a lot of people will do.

In Vampires Will Never Hurt You, the only thing I've ever heard from the whispering is, "Like ghosts in the snow." The production of this album is terrible but the lyrical aspect is very nice. Then again I'm a sucker for good lyrics. For me, i like a few, i love a few, and i hate a few. Overall this is definitely not my favorite album, but its a hella good starting point for a band.

early sunsets over monroeville is truly beautiful. its heavily slept on when it comes to bullets as an album. its so raw and emotional. It has a huge sense of pain to it.
Fun fact: Gerard got really emotional during the recording of that song to which the rest of the band had to have a "smoking break" because it was getting a bit emotional.
Another fact: Gerard had a rotten tooth and was struggling to do vocals around the time of recording early sunsets over monroeville. The producer of the album Geoff Rickley (lead singer of Thursday), knew of the pain and emotion Gerard was producing due to the rotten tooth and actually punched gerard to try and get emotion that you eventually hear in the final recording

The Tune Up also loved this reaction. Lol I feel bad sometimes as a major fan of the band, but their first album is not for me. Mainly because of the screaming. Like I enjoy screaming, (System of a Down ❤) but I get it. Their production value wasn't on point cuz they were just starting out.
I started with 3 Cheers, which had me HOOKED lol but The Black Parade had so many hits, that it became my fav album overall.
In this album my faves are Sunsets over Monroeville, Cubicle, and track 11 🙄. The guitar and music composition in some songs are pretty dope as well

I knew you weren’t going to enjoy this album at all, but I really appreciate how you realized that this album means so much to other people while most others would listen to it and trash it afterwards. This album is my favourite album of all time and Demolition Lovers is my favourite song of all time (mostly based on the fact that I listened to it during a really dark time, and not so much because of the sound itself).

Okay hi, my sister gave birth last night so I couldn't watch but I'm here! Firstly, I'm glad you can see where my username is from now :) its so old but its become a thing. Secondly, I totally agree with everything you said, I disliked the album when I first heard it, (too much screaming), but at some point I just acquired a taste for it and focused on the softer parts. Theres a lot of beautiful things in there like lyrics, guitars, and just some of the general emotion at times. They definitely were on the right path with what they wanted but were limited in tech, resources, and just overall music knowledge and composition. Its kind of a product of its time, and after watching some old footage of the making of this album, it kind of filled fans with a love for their pureness in this. You see a bunch of kids who didn't really know what they were doing but had so many emotions and didn't really know how to deal with them. I think I'm just rambling now but before I go, RAY TORO IS A GENIUS WITH GUITARS ANd he's just an amazing musician who doesn't get enough credit, but yeah, I'm glad you liked the guitar parts!

If you listen to Gerard's vocals in this album and the next, his improvement is astounding. And yes there's a concept. "The Demolition Lovers" are a Bonnie and Clyde couple that possibly die at the end. It's rumoured that its the same couple in "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge". If so, she lives, but he dies. So he makes a deal with the devil to take the souls of 1000 evil men in one night (to be reunited w/ her). But he fails and gets sent back to hell.

i get why you wouldn't like aspects of the album. personally, i love the raw vocals and screaming (mainly because it isn't over the top or constant screaming, which i can't stand) but yea the somewhat flat vocals, screaming and dark sound can definitely turn people away and i completely get that, i just love how aggressive and dark it is, probably why i love Three Cheers as well lmaoo glad you checked it out though man
edit: also, the analysis at the end about this album not being for everybody is true. this album is a place of comfort for me, the aggressive nature and tone of the project and how loud everything is helps get out emotions that have no other outlet and i'm glad i was able to find it when i did

  • @victator698

Your description of people who would like this was totally me when I found out about them. I used to be a person who didn't pay attention to lyrics in songs but this band really made me into a lyrical person but I love everything with music. This band specifically got me through a lot of unhappiness and the feeling of loneliness and monotony and got me into a lot more awesome music that I wouldn't have paid any attention to otherwise. I can totally see why this album isn't for you and that's totally respectable, there's mainstream stuff that I can not stand at all but see how people love it. Music is something that everyone can love.

MCR started after Gerard witnessed 9/11 so there was a lot of trauma, anger, grief. Skylines and Turnstiles was explicitly about that, I wasn’t born then so that tells you my age, but watching a recording of a live performance of it in a basement show in New Jersey, it sunk in pretty heavily. It and other things were deeply felt by all of them on this album. I seriously appreciate how respectful you are, it makes your reactions so great to watch.

This album definitely showed the start of something great. Like they pushed it out very quickly because the emotion was there and they wanted to jump in while it was still there. Gerard was singing most of these songs with a tooth abscess, and you can hear the pain in his voice. And right after 9/11 you can feel the upset, sadness, and frustration. It’s their only album that wasn’t a whole concept. They reference this album a lot on their later releases. The end of The World is Ugly samples the whispering at the end of Vampires Will Never Hurt You. Three Cheers and Bullets are like night and day in terms of production.
If you liked the music on this album I think you might* like Thursday’s music. Geoff from Thursday produced this album, and had a hand in Drowning Lessons outro. (Id check out “friends in the armed forces”, “standing on the edge of summer”, “running from the rain”, and “division st.” If you’re interested)

This is the best day ever is my least favourite MCR song.
Also if you where interested skylines and turnstiles is about 9 11, Gerard was working as a illustrator for the Cartoon Network in New York so saw it happening in front of his very eyes. He went home and wrote the song which was the first MCR song ever written.

  • @Beaveris

I completely understand you not feeling the album. It’s a rough listen, not mainstream at all, but it’s nice to see that some elements of it resonates in later projects, like the tendency to opera rock and concept (Demolition Lovers was the beginning of the concept for Three Cheers, and the album cover is a reference of that, called “Demolition Lovers II” if I’m not mistaken).
After all is said and done, I think MCR may win you over with Conventional Weapons, which has a lot of what is supposed to be Danger Days in early stages, and has a lot of concept ideas that echoes from Umbrella Academy (Gerard’s Comic Book Series - a highly prized one).
As a fan since 2002, I have to agree that MCR is not a perfect band, but is very loved by the Army and they hanged a lot of lives. Long live the Black Parade.

I love your honest reviews. A lot of what you say is really accurate. This album really doesn't sound very polished. For some people, that draws them to it, but it's totally fair to not be a fan of that. I think it's really funny how the only song you really liked was early sunsets, which I definitely thought was boring when I was an angsty thirteen year old. I love seeing your outside perspective of an album that holds nostalgia for me as an early emotional outlet and it made me appreciate the more melodic parts of it that you pointed out for the beautiful bits that they are.

I feel like in the early days of MCR, expecially in this album, the strongest part was, probably, the instrumental espects, and maybe the lyrical (although I personally tend to think of the music first, and concidering that it is your first reaction, i believe you tend to do so too). Gerard, as a vocalist, is obviously not the anazing-voice-how-can-anyone-sing-that-well singer, but his quite rough sounding, unpolished voice, seems to fit with the style. I am certain this album is not one for everyone's taste, obviously, though I quite like the raw sound of it.
I do have to mention that Ray is a very tallented guitarist and so is Frank.
And that Mikey has some really nice parts here.
And that Matt, even if you don't like him as a person (completely understandable) is an horrendously tallented drummer.
Also I am very happy you liked Early Sunsets, this is indeed a beautiful song.

Bullets is the most under produced album from MCR. It's like the complete opposite of Danger Days, production wise.

If I'm being honest, my only problem with this album were gerard's vocals. While I'm usually not put off by screamo, I just feel like it wasn't very well executed on here. The main reason why I like bullets are the lyrics and the overall aesthetic of it. I think it was mainly just mcr getting started and learning to work together as a band, if that makes sense.

    • @TheTuneUp

  • @AceMusicFreak
    @AceMusicFreak 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Okay so I've been diving into old/older Hardcore music like Have Heart and Bane lately and there is a lot of that influence in this Album and I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea and I'm not even sure if I like the overwhelmingly depressing tone of this album since Hardcore was all about PMA (positive mental attitude). So they talked about the problems but in the end the message is always: We can get through this, we can change things.
Also: Punk lives from tempo- and dynamic-changes so going from a quiet half time part into a really loud and moshy punk time part is to be expected
And there is no "The one song you mosh to", around that time and espeically with that album the whole venue would be a mosh pit for the whole duration of the show.
Okay so here's my personal opinion: I think My Chem is overrated. Not that they make bad music but espeically now people just like them because it's edgy and they're so emo. It's also probably one of the only non-mainstream-pop bands they know. People like this album because of "nostalgia" but this is just a mess at most points. If you compare this with for example Senses Fail's 2002 release you'd see how much of a car crash this is and it was both their first releases. The Black Parade is a great album but making everything the band did the best thing ever because of that is just stupid

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  6 ปีที่แล้ว

I really respect your input on any video I’ve seen a comment of yours on. Every time I get 10x more insight on whatever album we’ll be talking about. I never heard of that whole PMA attitude and hearing your opinion on why you think MCR is overrated makes a lot of sense. Again, thank you for the comments and thank you for watching 😊

    • @AceMusicFreak
      @AceMusicFreak 6 ปีที่แล้ว

even a lot of kids who grew up in the scene don't know about PMA and the old Hardcore scene. But that's why I write these comments, to clear up misconceptions about the scene even if a lot of the original sentiment got lost somewhere along the way and has to fight its way back in now. A big part of Hardcore was straight edge (no alcohol, no drugs, being vegan) and no ego and that worked when it was still a couter-movement but as alternative bands like Fall Out Boy got mainstream success the scene really forgot about all of that. Now younger bands and fans try to reclaim the scene again and make it stand for something. PMA never really went away since Pop Punk took it over with their posi posi life but only few actually know where it came from. All in all the scene is fascinating and has something for everybody

I mainly appreciate this album for the instrumentals- MCR's guitar has always fucked me up- but I can definitely understand how people wouldn't be able to overlook the other parts even if the instruments are great. I grew into myself while listening to this kind of music, and I also typically prefer raw vocals over super auto-toned vocals, so his voice really doesn't turn me off in any way. It's weird, it's like I don't notice it anymore, whereas I absolutely hated it when I first heard it.
This whole video was a mess of me singing along to all of the words while trying not to laugh at your displeased facial expressions as a mechanism for dealing with my secondhand embarrassment. Idk how to feel, honestly XD
HOWEVER! Something good about albums you aren't into is that when you do find a song you like, it makes me soooo happy and excited lmao
Random fact: Skylines and Turnstiles was written about 9/11, which Gerard Way witnessed firsthand. Supposedly that's what made him start up the band idea again (there had been previous attempts, I believe) because he didn't think his current life was making the kind of difference he wanted to make.
Demolition Lover is one of my favorite songs. It's hard to explain why, other than it gives me strong feelings that I also can't explain? I know, very articulate.
Even though I knew you weren't going to necessarily like the album, I was also expecting you to dislike it more than you did, so... not a win, but not a crippling loss, either?
Still a loss. But nothing unexpected, I guess haha
I love the way you look at music as a whole. You're so non-judgmental about different genres while still holding to your opinions, which is, in my opinion, the perfect reaction to things you don't like.
And now. Conventional Weapons. I have no idea what you will think about it. One or two of my favorite songs by them come from CW, but it's also an album that's not very hyped. At all. It was only released digitally i'm pretty sure, and I think it was made before Danger Days, then pushed aside because they felt it was too "safe" for them, or something to that effect.
Oooookay, this is way too long so I'm gonna cut it off. Thanks for the reaction!

Tell you what, the thing about Skylines is that I absolutely hate the official version. The demo version, which can be found on the greatest hits compilation, is way better in that it's just a lot simpler of a production (duh, it's a demo, but you get my point). There's no weird vocal stacking or other "experimental" shit going on that just kills the whole point, which was literally that Gerard had an identity crisis after watching the Towers come down. Demo version - definitely the more enjoyable listen, even if half their shit wasn't in tune hahahaha

Yeah, this album is not for everyone. It's bad, pretty bad, but I love it. It took multiple listenings but now these songs are total bangers to me. The only song I haven't grown to like is Headfirst for Halos. No idea what but I don't really like it
But as much as I like this album, nothing is bigger than my love for Three Cheers

Please react to Die Antwoord's newest album "Mount Ninji and the Nice Time Kid" It's very different rap, very entertaining

Different how? I don’t really like serious rap 😂 how would you describe it?

They're a south African electro-rap group consisting of male/female duo, Ninja and Yolandi Visser, and it's not super serious. Not every song is rap either. The Mount Ninji and the Nice Time Kid album actually gives off Tim Burton vibes which I was so not expecting. And all of their music videos are nuts. Very artistic honestly and they don't give a flying f*ck what anybody thinks of them. Would love to see your reaction
