The Kharai Camels: Amazing Camel Breed of India

- 'Life in Arid region is due to livestock' and camel has been considered as a lifeline in desert ecosystem. Kachchhh district, apparently considered as dry region, has contributed unique livestock species. The most interesting of such species is the Kharai Camel, probably the only domesticated animal species that lives in dual eco-system, as it survives on dry land ecosystem as well as coastal eco-system. Kharai Camel, perhaps the first such kind of camel which can swim through sea water and reach islands in creeks in the gulf of Kachchh. Unfortunately this breed is depleting fast due to rapid industrialization and cutting down of mangrove forests.
This film explores the uniqueness of the breed, its relationship with the maldhari pastoral community and the plight of the kharai camels and maldharis due to industrialisation.

I love camels very much. They are calm and their walks is very special. When they sit they look like they are trying to ask for mercy when they get abuse and torture when no one cares and loves them. It's very sad, I want to take care of all animals and give them love and kindness they deserved.
Interestingly enough, we also have camels who are fond of mangroves and swimming in Somalia's northeastern provinces.

Frosting films: the Kharai camels are beautiful indeed. Why do not ride them? Pulling carts makes them heavy and coarse. You need to write to your government to register the Kharai as a separate breed to protect them and their food, the mangroves. You need petitions with many 1000s of signatures from breeders .Good luck!

The main issue here is the length of time this bred of camels were bred? This determines their evolution to their current state.

I thought there were only two camel species! Interesting these could be a sub-species a genetic test would make that clear. I think there are many many reasons to save mangroves across the planet, this is another one. Foreign dredging companies brought into India have been decimating mangroves to build harbours and water ways, it's got to stop! Just one of the most dramatic affect of this destruction will be depleted fish and sea food stocks as this is were fry live before entering the open waters, without the mangroves protection fish and thus food will disappear.
After watching this i think cow and camel both are equally important to us.
