Followed the trail of tasty cheese crumbs. Brother you have some chops. Very nice cover and damned to my ear I'd swear I was hearing clay play it. What is that Bass your playing? Sick looking and sounds great.........subscribed.
ayee thank you so much! and welcome :) the bass is a Kiesel Vanquish (V59K). Kiesel does all custom instruments, so each one is kinda built specifically to order
thanks so much! i don’t have all of the spec’s because i didn’t custom order/build it (i bought it off of the previous owner), but i do know the top is buckeye burl and the body is swamp ash. the top wood is quite an eye catching cut, i must admit
Great cover! Any chance you know the fingering of the licks Clay does in his bass playthough of this song? I'm determined to learn it, but damn what a slick line.
thank you so much! unfortunately, i do not. it’s been something i’ve meant to get around to learning, seems really fast paced and percussive on the strumming hand though, that’s for sure
thank you so much! i took Skype lessons with him years ago. i’m unsure if he is still doing them, and i’m not currently offering them myself. i don’t think i’m the best teacher to be honest 😅
they would be hard to describe over text, i'll try my best. this strumming/plucking technique is comprised of hitting your hand against the strings (let's call that a Rest), picking upwards with the pick, and plucking with your middle finger, then ring finger, etc. with that context, let me try to explain an exercise i do on a 5 string. (in standard tuning) i start with my index on the 5th fret of the E string and do an up-pick. then follow it with the traditional triplet (that dead note rest i mentioned earlier on the E, an up-pick on the E, and a pluck on the A) all muted with your fretting hand. immediately followed by another triplet thingy but starting on the next string down. so the dead note rest hand hit thing on A, up-pick on A, pluck on D. but when you pluck the D, fret the 7th fret so you hit the octave. follow that with the dead note rest on E again, up-pick on E, pluck A, then pluck D, then another dead note rest on the E (or wherever cause it's just your hand hitting the strings) but make sure your pick lands underneath the E so you can repeat the whole thing again. everything should be muted with your fretting hand the whole exercise except when you're up-picking the 5 on E and plucking the 7 on D. i just keep repeating it cause the way you land with your pick at the end sets you right up to do it again start slow of course, especially if you're not used to incorporating the ring finger much. that one feels weak for awhile. i hope any of that made sense lol if not, message me on any platform i can send vids in dm's and i'll try to break it down
Amazing and the technique is on point! Would you recommend those exact strings brand and gauge that you’re using for this style and for achieving polyphia bass tone? Or do you know by any chance which strings brand and gauge does clay gober use? Thanks man, waiting for your next video!
thank you so much! i’m honestly not too picky about what brand of strings i use, but i tend to hop back and forth between D’Addario and Ernie Ball. last i knew, Clay uses Ernie Ball 45-130. hope that helps!
back when i used to play live shows, i used this same PreAmp and a Darkglass B7K pedal and it got me something sort of similar. you can hear more what that sounded like in my previous videos on this channel where i’m using that exact setup. this video, i ditched the B7K and ran it through the Neural DSP Parallax plugin for my distortion instead. if you’re just using the SansAmp RBI preamp alone, you may be able to crank the Drive knob for something similar, but it’s hard to say if it would be close to identical or not.
thanks! it’s a custom Kiesel Vanquish V59K. all of Kiesel’s guitars are made custom to order. also, full gear run down of what i used is in the description below the video
thanks so much! in this video, i used D'Addario EXL170-5 (.045-.130). all gear specs are in the Description of the video. however, i’m quite keen on the Ernie Ball strings now. last i knew, Clay is using the Ernie Ball Regular Slinky (.045-.130). those are my go-to’s, looking to try out the Power Slinky pack some time too though
@@habvab3738 sort of tough to say, i feel like a lot of it is subjective in terms of like what may be easier or harder for some people. personally, i started with Champagne and i found it to be a good gateway because it teaches you getting comfortable with plucking with the middle finger without all the dead note triplet stuff that Clay started utilizing in later records. most stuff on Renaissance is that way too. i feel like the difficulty level climbs pretty linearly as you progress through their discography. NLND and RTYWD stuff can be pretty tricky to figure out and get down
