She just thought it sounded similar. Maybe they don't even know exactly how Russian sounds because they are from US and they don't have Russian speakers around. Tallinn does have a big Russian population and it's possible they were hearing Russian and thought it's Estonian. Don't make such a big deal about it.
- Blini aren't an Estonian dish though as Estonia is not a Slavic, nor Eastern European country. You just happened to be in a restaurant that offers them. - Estonian is absolutely not similar to Russian as it's not an Indo-European language like Russian and English are.
Exactly! Estonian language has nothing to do with any Slavic language. It's a part of Finnic branch of the Uralic language family. Also, Blinis are Russian/Slavic dish.
+Eksi arvamus you're not wrong and I never said Blini was Estonian. Also Ashley just meant it sounded Russian to her, or more accurately that she doesn't know the difference between the two when listening in on a conversation. Thanks for watching, we hope you enjoyed! 😀
I am an Estonian. How can Estonian and Russian be similar? Russian an English are actually more similar, same family tree. Estonian is totally different finno ugorian language!
Well, what sounded Russian to Ashley definitely was Russian, because there are living a lot of Russians in Estonia and Latvia(the biggest amount of them in capitals of those countries), less in Lithuania(heritage of occupation of the USSR) and they simply are speaking Russian. It`s the same as if I will tell to everyone after visiting Maiami restaurant that English sounds like Spanish. I don`t know how about you, but I am trying to learn and find out beforehand some info about country, its culture, language etc. I am going to visit and therefore to show some respect to it and not total ignorance.

Estonians consider themselves nordics. Some people disagree, but the fact is that they did have a prolonged relationship with Scandinavia and Finland. They’re also an observer state at the Nordic council (ie. they’re part of the council but they don’t have any power).
