The Story Of Embraer: The Past, Present & Future

  • There are not many large aircraft manufacturers that have survived alongside the Boeing and Airbus duopoly. Over the years, most have moved aside or been acquired.
Embraer stands out as one of the largest independent manufacturers today, offering a range of smaller private and regional commercial jets. With a recent failed merger with Boeing, it looks set to maintain its independence.
We explore its past, present, and future.

Competition is keen so let's hope they can continue.

Worked as mechanic for Continental Express (ExpressJet), we were the launch customer for the 145 and 135. We had ERs, later converted to EP, LRs and XRs. Absolutely loved that plane. When SkyWest bought the company and merged us with ASA we inherited the CRJs. The CRJs required twice the maintenance as the ERJ. Oh the days of working Jungle jets and snow birds.

I've flown on Embraer's E175 a few times, the first time being under awful weather conditions. The E175 held its own better than the big leagues as far as I am concerned. What surprised me was the general quietness and smoothness of the aircraft, legroom was even better than some larger aircraft, all and all every flight was definitely most enjoyable. I therefore hope to see Embraer grow from strength to strength and to keep designing and manufacturing truly beautiful and such good quality airplanes.

Clever of them to launch a mid sized military cargo jet. Big market. Good to see smaller companies being successful. They will also be heavily involved in producing the new Saab Gripen.

Embraer is a fantastic company. Its engineering base is incredible. Composed by young and talented engineers. Of course, Embraer is loved by Brazilians so it attracts the most talented people.
The company is efficient and competent. The recent projects such as the C-390 millennium and the E2 family are the best products in the market and were completed on budget and on schedule. Meanwhile, any other manufacturer struggles to finish their projects.
Just so you know, the E2 is 10% more fuel efficient than the A220. This is just astonishing combined with the long history Embraer has of reliability, easy and cheap maintenance.
Every aircraft manufacturer will suffer due to the pandemic. But Embraer, Boeing and Airbus will not go bankrupt. They are strategic companies to their governments.

When I lived in Nuremberg, Germany, Lufthansa flew ERJ directly between Nuremberg and large cities in Europe without transferring at Frankfurt or Munich hub aeroports. What a time saver for me, and I always had positive experience when flying with ERJ. Fewer seats mean quicker boarding and disembarking time. Main problems faced by Brazil are
      1) economic stagnation for last 10 yrs
      2) lack of political stability, which’s leads to an ambiguity in economic policy making it unfavourable for businesses
      3) geography- most of Brazil is either hilly or rainforest making it expensive for industrial sector. Moreover Brazil’s coastal area (the most critical region for any economy) is hilly, making Brazil the worst place to set up manufacturing unit.
      4) chronic problem of corruption and lack of proper governance and administration
      5) middle income trap

There is a detail from Embraer, forgotten by everyone. In the 1970s, Embraer assembled, under license, planes of the North American Piper. It was an important step to learn in practice. At the end of the agreement, Embraer improved its initial designs by replacing the Piper Navajo piston engines with turboprops. The planes were better than the original Piper. Another achievement that allowed its growth was to dominate pressurization, when building the EMB-121 "Xingu", with 2 turboprops. The full story is best seen on Wikipedia in Portuguese pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer
