One of my best friends played the mandolin. He had played with Doc and Ralph. He was considered the best in this area. Gone now 10 years. I miss his playing.
I used to put felt on all my banjos tail pieces to keep them from vibrating and making unwanted noise and still do it to every banjo I work on. that mando does have a bark to it!
Thanks for the setup video Jerry, I don’t get too many mandolin’s so it’s always great to see some basic setups. Thank you for the video and the additional explanations, it’s great info to have.
+BarbedStar glad to hear that. I'm not old enough to drink coffee myself. At least that's what my mom always told me. She's deceased and never told me any different so I still don't drink it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for all videos I just bought my first "project" after watching a bunch of your videos. Acoustic guitar with a snapped off head stock, got some clamps and titebond glue and went at it will be seeing how it turns out tomorrow thanks again before i found these videos I would never have bought it
I took your advice and put a cast tailpiece and LS 250's on my Loar LM 500 and it made a big difference! It's way more alive and open sounding. I only wish it weren't covered by urethane! Much obliged!
I'm considering buying the MD315 for my first and probably last mandolin. It's right at $699. I like the F style look. The Kentucky brand is over my budget. I was considering the Washburn M108 or M118 but many in the reviews say that the front is to thick and it doesn't project. I will have to add a pick up later if I get the MD315 so I can amplify. I would appreciate any thoughts you might have on my first purchase. Most reviews say the Kentucky KM150 is the best purchase.... but I really want the F style not the A. Thanks
Another great video. Two things: I think it does sound much better; and, although I am sorry you got hurt, you had me laughing so hard I was in tears when you said "I radiused my knuckle too."😂 I can't even write this without chuckling!
he should of just had you put a new tail on it one thats solid so it'd have some more bark to it I have the Eastman 915 A style and it has a lot more bark but it has more upgrades to it than the 315 too the bridge must be an Eastman thing as mine is the same for intonation closer to the back on the high side but all in all there a good Mandolin thanks for the great post and as always it's a joy to watch your video
I played both demo clips back to back. Much nicer sounding mids and less ice picky highs with the strings and saddle. Good improvement. Is that a mahogany top or just stained to look like?
Always a pleasure to see you at work, Jerry! What kind of oil did you use for this fretboard? I've just ordered a md 315 for myself and I want to be sure to properly take care of it
Have you Jerry, or could you build a guitar like a mandolin? just curious as to wether it could be done, if not, is there any reason why it couldn`t /shouldn`t be done?
+1066wastrel there are all kinds of mandolin family instruments built to all kinds of sizes. I am not an expert in them but if you get to looking there are plenty of them out there and there are plenty that are in the guitar size. Thanks for watching.
I was watching a Sarah Jarosz video of her playing her octave mandolin. I'm curious why the four low strings don't match. I've never seen an octave up close. Almost looks like the 2nd and 4th string has a red spiral. She re tunes when she takes the capo off.
When you played the Mandolin in the beginning it sounded sooo thin ! Jerry after you fix her boy she came alive !! Ps I wonder the mandolin owner is a new mandolin pick ?
You continue to validate that experience is NOT transferable!! Great job Jerry!!
William Buntin thank you very much.

+Buddy Martin thanks for taking a look.
I can hear the difference for sure, nice job Jerry. I’m taking notes on your setups
I agree; the repaired job had more punch, presence. That satin finish is gorgeous! You do excellent work.
Your videos go soooo good with coffee!
+BarbedStar glad to hear that. I'm not old enough to drink coffee myself. At least that's what my mom always told me. She's deceased and never told me any different so I still don't drink it. Thanks for watching.

michaeladam caira thank you very much.

Great set up Jerry love the video.

much improved after setup, more punchy, solid focused tone, especially on the single notes.
Ear Efink thank you old buddy.

Yes, I can hear the difference! (Also am very familiar with the skin removal!)
+Scott Brewer yeah that skin removal stuff I'm pretty good at that. Thanks for watching.
Lookin good, Jerry!
+Boudreau Guitars thank you.

+thats2kewl I'm glad somebody found that funny.. I try to throw in a little sick humor every once in awhile. Thanks for watching.
Wow! What a difference.

paul taylor thank you very much.
Nice one jerry cheers rob
+rob dilley thank you very much.
Nice video. Thanks
Much fuller sound Jerry, great work and thanks for the tips. Kind Regards from England. P.S Can't believe how much you sound like John Wayne!!
+steveparkes1 thank you very kindly. John Wayne was my hero.
Mine too !!!
I was thinking that too!!!
I played both demo clips back to back. Much nicer sounding mids and less ice picky highs with the strings and saddle. Good improvement. Is that a mahogany top or just stained to look like?
+Dane Nichols thank you very much.
+Dane Nichols the top was Spruce I believe.
Always a pleasure to see you at work, Jerry!
What kind of oil did you use for this fretboard?
I've just ordered a md 315 for myself and I want to be sure to properly take care of it
Boiled linseed oil. Just be sure to wipe it off. Wait about 5 minutes and wipe it off again.
Sounds good!
+Reel McCoy thank you very much.
Ps check out McClanahans video on carving mandolin tops and backs. It'll save wear and tear on carving wit those small finger planes
Darrell Blanchard okay I'll take a look. Thanks for watching.

+smolville sorry I don't know a lot about Octave mandolins. Thanks for watching
When you played the Mandolin in the beginning it sounded sooo thin !
Jerry after you fix her boy she came alive !!
Ps I wonder the mandolin owner is a new mandolin pick ?
+scott ford thank you for taking a look.
I live in marshall mo and I have the same Mando. What would a set up like that cost today?
Good job God bless!
I enjoy your videos from Bucyrus Ohio
Ya you can hear the difference , But not like the rezonation of your Channel sound .sounds better though .
+Garnett M thank you for watching.
Great set up Jerry, sounds a lot better, but your finger doesn't!
It definitely sounds less tinny on the treble end
Darrell Blanchard thank you very much. I totally agree especially in person.
knuckle radius blues
It sounds as clean as any mandolin to me.
+Krusty Buzzard thank you very much.
I can see high frets and I just play....I don't do setup or repair! And I got a lame left eye and trifocals!
+John Garrison thank you for taking a look.
