My MD315 came in and I love it. It was a litte more than a I wanted to spend on my first one, but the quality is so good for $750. It came with a free setup, and a case. I loves it! Lol
Well, son of a witch. 70 years old and I see that stringing technique. I dug out my old dunce hat from grade school days. They just gave it to me cuz' I wore it so much it sorta took on my essence. I frickin' can't believe I've never seen that nor figured that out. Having poor sight I would have the winder in my mouth, the string cutter balanced on my knee, well you know the routine. Thanks for showing an old dog a new trick. Nice work on the Eastman too!

I just started on mandolin from many years on guitar recently and have done a complete setup on mine using the Meldrum book and watching your videos. I've been able to make an old, neglected MK Legacy perfectly usable. Love the stringing method, btw!
Jerry, love the new view. You keep a clean, organized, shop. Your new-er camera has already shown it has great sound, for both voice and music and your experiments with add on mics has shown they do not. The furnace sounds are no problem. You do not need to talk louder, to overcome them. Fine work, on the MD315. Isn't nice when the repairs are simple?

Hi Jerry, this mandolin sounds fine, you have done a great job in setting it up but it has nothing like the punch, vibrancy or volume of your handmade mandolins, the difference is so obvious and a testament to your lutherie skills. Peace and Love from Bonny Scotland.
My 315 sounds great. I've added an ebony arm rest from Etsy an an upgrade on the tuners. Klusons with bone buttons. The setup was perfect out of the box. Thank you for asking. I also have a 509 A style. What I see is the way they project.
The video came out well Jerry, Don't worry about background noises unless you are making saddles. Then I think there would be some competition. Otherwise I think the new digs are suiting you well.
I hardly heard the furnace myself so no problems there and the Mandolin sounds great too, A tip from me to everyone else is if you want a router base for your own Dremel i got one off Ebay (Model 335) for £25.50 it's base is plastic too (Clear see through) and comes with a couple of other bits to attach one of which will allow you to route a circle like Jerry does on his Guitars.
Oh you're going to have to do a setup on the furnace. Mic it, add a little compression, a little digital delay. Shoot for a better mid-range. There's nothing like a really good sounding furnace. Tighten the belt and oil the blower. I've heard worse. Go for that mid 67 furnace sound. That kept a lot of people warm. Other than that you sound great.
I like the new view of the shop. I’ll bet it smells good there. Cut wood, finishes and solvents, buffing and polishing compounds and machine smells. Please don’t judge. 🤔 Does the careful fitting of the bridge and the antler saddle make a noticeable difference in sound?
That sounded so much better after you done your magic!! Now, I have a question; Would a hard finish on the INSIDES make a difference in the voice of the instrument?? Would it be sweeter, or softer, or louder, or just not enough to make a difference? I have wondered about that for awhile. Just for your info, I am not a Luther, I just like to watch a master!
You need some sound deadening material around your recording spot. Something in front of you, to the sides, and overhead as much as possible. If you have recording lights, just some squares of egg-crate foam on the light stands and maybe a tri-fold of cardboard with the same stuff glued to it. Then something hanging from the ceiling, if you can do it without creating shadows. You'd be amazed what a difference it can make.
I like the shop view Jerry. If you wanted to clean up the audio a little, you could try a lapel mic but I think it's fine as is. Thanks for the videos!
Hmm I just got a 315 eastman and didnt have those issues with the bridge, that being said I would love to upgrade the saddle and do the work you do. The sharpness on the right hand is defianlty not very comfortable. Wish you lived in canada so I could give you my money... thanks for the tips and tricks man.. take care Did you put the felt on the tail piece, like in previous setups ?
I just received my MD315 f via UPS and mine did not have any of those problems that your friend's mandolin had. No problems with the posts or the bridge sitting flat on the sound board. The posts on my bridge do not stick above the post holes. My neck is fine too. How many mandolins does Eastman crank out each week? By sheer scale a blip is going to happen sooner or later. Perhaps your friend got the blip? It happens. Best wishes to you and your friend - Richard in SLC.
Loved the new video, nee workshop. The furnace didn't bother me at all, just a bit of a hiss in the background. Definitely need to get a lavalier or clip on mic though, you're echoing.

These Eastman 315 mandos are darn near perfect right out of factory set ups. They are made in China ( show me ANY mando of any quality now days that isn't except Collings or Ellis, a few others?). It's gotta be rare that they would let this go like that. They are all that good, by all estimations. Little minor things, tho, that need touched up, I bet. Even the old Flatirons from the late 80s, early 90s had a couple sticky problems easily addressed. We had other issues in dealing with corporate headquarters. I can't get into them here and water under the bridge at this point, as even Flatirons are made in China now days, unfortunately for loss of quality, overall. Bob
I've owned an Eastman jazzbox and frankly, it reminded me of a Kalamazoo Gibson ES-175 I once owned. Watch the TH-cam videos of the Eastman factory and you'll see they're all handmade. I'm no prophet, but I suspect one day we'll be talking about the golden age of Eastman much like we talk about all those "cheap Japanese guitars" that now command respect and price.
Watch in the video. Sand the saddle and lean it very slightly towards the tail as you sand... Very Slightly checking often. Slow and steady is the way to fine tune things. 👍
I was hoping you'd didn't explain the positioning of the bridge. Is that important? It looks to like the bridge on the E string side is slightly more towards the tail piece than the bridge on the G string side. 23:50 Is there a reason for that?
Sir. I put a new set of guitar strings on my guitar. Brand New day played good for about five days the Six-Day the two bottom strings first and second string went dead on me what would cause that. the first time it did it I thought it was just too strange might have been old or something. Thanks not sure of how long they've been in the store. But this is like the third set. and the two bottom strings keep going dead on me after about four to five days and I don't really play that much it's like a hobby thing. if I played every day I can kind of understand it but no more than I play I don't understand why they would go dead. Do you have an idea that you could tell me. Just asking. And thank you for your time. 😀👍
That's the opposite of the norm. Generally the wound strings go dead quicker than the bare strings. My thought is perhaps they're not actually going dead perhaps your hearing them settled into the nut and saddle and perhaps the nut and saddle are not cut properly. In other words if the slot in the nut is not a proximately the same as the angle of the peghead and the slot in the saddle is not approximately the same as from the tailpiece up to the saddle the strings will 10 to vibrate on each of those and cause a deadening sound and are buzzing sound. Don't know if you can understand what I'm getting at their but that's my best guess.

Jerry i got the same problem. Pain full fingers & thums . So i bought a jar of BIUE - EMU only been useing it 3 day's and i can tell a improvement 👍🙌😁
sanding that bridge to make it fit more flush against the top is bound to make that mandolin sound better. nice playing too!

My 83 yo mother uses greenlipped mussel extract for her arthritis and is very happy with it. No instrument repair there, but lots of knitting.

how can you get the bridge to angle back toward tailpiece? looking at mine, it's pitching very slightly with the height screws bent toward neck
