  • Birth of a Dii LUNA model handpan, tuned by David Beery.
    This is the first major tuning our handpans go through. Subsequent tunings occur in several further steps.

    Hello, congratulations on your excellent work.
    Can you tell me what ring measures to hold the handpan
    and how the dimples of each note are made, can you inform me too, please?
    Thank you very much

      This handpan is 20” inside diameter. The rings are 20” inside diameter also. The steel I used is not extremely thick, I used 1/2” square stock. We use a press with male/female dies and rubber to shape the dimples. 👍🏼

    Hey Dave, can you sell a set of tuning rings, shipped to USA?

    Hello from France thank you very much for the video to share all this, I wanted to know if you make a very precise tuning of the departure knowing that you will stick the shells and then I suppose to review the tuning; how many times do you have to check the tuning after the collage and you have to leave a time between each check thank you very much for your answers

      Hello! I tune the shell one time on the rings as best I can. This steel is about 1.2mm thick. The rim flange is less than 1cm wide. It always deforms and goes out of tune substantially when it is glued to the bottom shell. But the most important thing is to shape the steel and “train” it to sound good before it is glued. If the shaping and tuning is not adequate before gluing, you will have many problems tuning later.

    hello. admire your work. could you please tell me where i can get measures for the different types of tuning? I´m starting with the shellopan so i could use advice.

      I have been making steel instruments since 1993. I originally got my note shapes from Ellie Mannette at a steel drum workshop. The note shapes and sizes are mostly the same for steel drum and handpans. However, the thickness of steel many change the size of the notes. Thin steel will require a smaller note size and thicker steel requires larger note sizes.

    Cool...seems a fragile instrument? Can see it would just be a matter of time before notes would need to be tuned again? Does cleaning effect sound? At $2000 that would be a big bummer. You find cleaning rust effect sound? The synthesized hangdrum samples I use currently can be tuned and tweaked easily. Doesn't change unless I change it, and can be had at a cost of pennies. Works great until a time I can afford a real one!... Thanks

    Great stuff, Dave. Does that sticker affect the sound?

      Michal S Hello Michal, I have several JET brand pneumatic hammers that I use for sinking and shaping the handpans. They have been very good for almost 20 years.

    Could I retune my handpan with a mallet? I bought one for $1000 but I think they didnt stabilize the notes properly as the notes are a bit shakey, could I mimick what you are doing here with my hand pan thats already put together?

    • @davesislandinstruments
      @davesislandinstruments  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      mase ofspades Hi Mase, I would caution you against trying to tune your own handpan. Handpan tuning is tricky and requires years of experience. You can easily make more problems for yourself and make the note sound worse than it did before. I suggest that you send your handpan to a professional who has already tuned handpans successfully for several years. Hello Dave, does the depth of the shell affect sound quality?

    • @davesislandinstruments
      @davesislandinstruments  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Janis m Hi Janis! Yes, but it is difficult to put into words. There are some nuances that can be perceived. The depth doesn’t really affect the tuning. The notes will sound in tune with shallow or deep instruments, but the timbre may change. A shallow instrument may sound less resonant. A deeper instrument may sound more full. But other changes occur, too. Typically when the metal is sunk deeper it tends to get thinner. Thinner metal tends to sound “thin”and sometimes it flutters a bit. So, ultimately, I think there is a comfortable middle ground where the instrument sounds best.

    What steel grade is used?

      @davesislandinstruments  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a low carbon steel but I don’t have the exact specifications.

    Did you temper it before tuning?

    • @davesislandinstruments
      @davesislandinstruments  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      THF Yep! We press the notes then burn it. 👍🏼

    • @tinghofung
      @tinghofung 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, did you do the shaping?

    • @davesislandinstruments
      @davesislandinstruments  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      THF Opps! Yes, I forgot to include that step. Press notes, shape and smooth around notes, burn, tune.

      Daryl Lebo Hi Daryl, if you’re local let’s set up a time for you to drop by. If you bring a shell you’ve worked on I can diagnose your difficulties and maybe help you a bit. 👍
