    I loved the Ecco games. They are such great games and are far darker and complex than they appear. Definitely was scared by them...still am when I play to this day.

      Yeah, the only one in the series that doesn't quite completely unnerve me or send me into philosophical-waxing is Ecco Jr., and even then it feels a bit odd, even though I know I can't die in that one.

    I remember being baffled by this game as a kid. Almost beat it once or twice but never managed to do it. Seeing it get destroyed like this brings me great joy. What a trip.

    One of my favorite things about AGDQ is how effortless the runners make everything look, despite the difficulty involved. But the best of all is when it's a game you've played, so you know exactly how hard it is.
    I played this game when I was a kid, and it took me about as long as this year's entire AGDQ event to get to the second stage.

    Tides of Time plays better, but the first Ecco has the edge when it comes to the (darker) atmosphere.
    Both are great games especially because how they game look & sound, which is complemented in such a way in how the game plays that it creates a terrific, lonely and dark atmosphere, one quite rare for the 16-bit era.
    And I think that 'Welcome to the Machine' is one of the greatest last stages ever created haha.

    does anyone know about the "dark backstory" of why this game was made? searching doesnt come up with anything

    • @TheBytegeist
      @TheBytegeist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Not everything the player or couch people said there was accurate. They're probably alluding to the works of John C. Lilly. While Ecco's creator Ed Annunziata read books by Lilly, the inspiration coming from that angle is often blown out of proportion, because it makes for an eye-catching article or video. However, it's definitely NOT the "dark backstory or reason of why the game was made". Here's an excerpt from a 2013 interview with Annunizata:
      Sef: What was your inspiration when creating Ecco the Dolphin? How did you come up with the idea?
      Ed: Back in those days console systems were all about smooth scrolling play fields and sprites. My head was thinking sidescroll or platform game, but I wanted to do something different. At first it was the movement and control that I was thinking about. I filled in everything after I had that working in my head. Most important was the smooth sine wave motion and the surface interaction, getting speed to jump higher and higher into the air I KNEW would be cool.
      Sef: One of the most fascinating aspects of Ecco is that the main character is a Dolphin. Did you study the animal to make sure it was represented well in the game?
      Ed: After I had the idea for the play mechanic, I started to study about the dolphins. It was easy to learn the basics from the library and books I bought (no google back then) but, the real inspiration of making the creatures sentient was a book I read: Sounding by Hank Searls. This story was from the point of view of a whale. It really inspired me to think of Ecco as thinking feeling creature. Also, this story inspired me to think more and more about how the dolphin’s echolocation works - so that was added to the main controls.

      @@TheBytegeist While you're certainly correct that it isn't the defining reason Ecco was created, it certainly had some bearing on the direction and inspiration of the game. Indeed, the name 'Ecco' is said to come from a hallucination of John C. Lilly when he saw taking Ketamine and placing himself in sensory deprivation chambers. During the hallucination, he was visited by aliens calling themselves the 'Earth Coincidence Control Office.' ECCO being an acronym of that title. That plus the aliens can definitely explain why the games have this weird science fiction vibe to them.

    • @BluBoulzor
      @BluBoulzor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This game is fucked up because it involves alien abduction, time travelling and stuff that has no place to be in a kid's game. The dark backstory isn't darker than the story of the game.

    • @TheBytegeist
      @TheBytegeist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@LordoftheDice No, Ecco was not named after Lilly's ECCO. There's a series of "obscure Ecco trivia" tweets by Annunziata. One of them reads: "Obscure Ecco Trivia #2: The original name was Delphinus, my boss Clyde G came up with 'echo!' I replaced the h with a c".

    I find it funny how Chronoon looks kinda similar to the composer of certain Ecco titles. (Attila Heger, aka Laren d'Or.) I mean, just google the dude, you'll see.
    Also, as a Hungarian, can confirm, most of us are indeed born with genetic knowledge of cutting edge analytical geometry (Martians, anyone?), however, I happened to be in the minority - still vividly remember renting this game for a weekend as a kid and not even being able to get past the first stage. Regardless, had fun dicking around as a dolphin, eating fish and listening to the music.
