  • Why Are There 14 Golf Clubs In A Bag And What Do They All Do?
According to the rules of golf we are all allowed to carry a maximum of fourteen clubs in your golf bag. But what clubs do you need? What do they each do? In this video we’ll build a virtual bag of 14 clubs explaining why each one has a vital role to play.

I remember years ago in the 60's an interview with a pro golfer ( can't remember his name! Too many years ago!) He told the story of taking up golf when he was 12. His father gave him a 6 iron. Just the 6 iron! He asked his father where the rest of the clubs were. His father pointed out this fact: " son, if you learn how to use this club properly and successfully I'll consider adding to your set." He learned how to shoot par with just a 6 iron! And, yes😉, he got the rest of the set!

    • @Dreyno

I started with 3 clubs. 9 iron, 5 iron and a putter. Bought a 3 wood after a while. Really learned the short game from being so limited. That 9 iron was used for anything under 125 yards (I was only 13) down to bunker and flop shots. To this day I can put a ball over a clothesline from 3 yards with a 9 iron.

@@TheJohnswa Bump and run with a 7 iron is perfect. Most people go for an 8 but I find it lifts the ball too high.
5 clubs is enough but most people (myself included) would rather carry the full 14. Better to have and not need than need and not have.

After 4 years of sorting, my bag has developed somewhat strangely; it started pretty much how you suggested. I hit the ball very long and hard so distance isnt a problem for me. I found I lost most shots because of my wayward driver so I dumped it and replaced it with a Callaway Mini driver set to 13deg. My strongest clubs are long irons so I replaced my 3 wood with a Mizuno MP-H5 1i for driving and long shots off the fairway. Left my Nike Covert VR 20deg 3h as it is a jack of all trades even if a bit of a loose canon. Nike VR Procombos 4-9. I dont gap my wedges I use a Nike 48/10 pro wedge for all distances in and use Nike VR 56/14 & 60/10 toe sweep lob wedge round the green depending on need. Ping Anser milled putter finishes the bag. In winter I reduce this to 10 clubs with a carry bag. I started with a traditional bag but evolved the selection to fit my strengths (I hit long irons well) and minimise my weaknesses (I cant hit a wood to save my life). The journey has been more fun than the golf itself; goodness knows what will change next ;-)

The club I struggle with is my 3 hybrid. I can’t get a feel for it and it’s even more difficult if the ball is on a bad lie. I’m at 14 clubs now after adding a gap and lob wedge to my bag. Not sure what to get rid of yet as I’d like a 56 wedge. My sand wedge is a 54 but I’m prefer to use the 60 degree lob wedge for bunkers now 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @Ambushw23
    @Ambushw23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

A good tip I was giving when starting you don’t have to have just 14 clubs if you wanna work out between some clubs which is best there’s nothing wrong with having 20 clubs with you when you’re playing by yourself. So when you go back to that course with friends you know what clubs perform better in those spots. A lot of people do I need my 9 iron or should I go I go with a lower loft wedge like a 48 bring both and when you get to that spot where you are deciding between those clubs remember that and go to the practice tee and hit 10-20 shots of each and see which is better. Tweaking your clubs after 1 shot in a round isn’t gonna help you need to more data. Choosing between a 2 iron and hybrid is another tough one and it can change course to course. Personally this is mine in order of distance Driver, Driving iron 16 degree, 5-wood, 3,4,5,6,7,8 irons, 45,54,58,60 degree wedges and putter. And I have 3-wood and 4 hybrids that I switch with almost always the 58 degree. I switch the 5 wood with the 3 a hybrid goes in and sometimes the I go 2 iron at 20 degrees over my 16 when the par 3s are short, then you get in to what degrees you want you irons the can range between 3-5 degrees you can have a 33 degree 6 iron and a 38 degree that’s a difference of 4-8 yards in the same iron so really knowing your distances with each club and filling the holes in best you don’t want a 28 degree 5 iron and a 37 degree 6 and you don’t want a 32 degree 5 iron and a 33 degree 6 when sets are made they are always set at the eight degrees apart but you need to know the degrees when mixing sets you’ll do this usually with your 2-4 6-9 I like a stronger stiffer 6-9 with steel shaft I use mizunos but my longer irons I like my graphite shafts still stiff but the club face to be softer more feel my dispersion got better when I made that change but if I do that with my shorter irons I use control they sit quicker which can be nice I’m more wild my dispersion is worse with graphite shafts on my 7 especially I lost 3 yards of dispersion on a 100 shots with graphite shaft on my 7 my bad shots were worse but my good shots were better but they don’t happen often much more consistent the other way. My last piece of advice don’t toss a club away after 1 bad round if you switch clubs and your first 50-60 shots are maybe a bit worse give it a shot and if you touch a 100 and the feel is off still go back and don’t switch to a club after 10 good shots I’ve done that with a driver once I hit it at the range and was doing consistent 240 yard perfect right to left draw like I like and I played 4 rounds with it and my drivers were worse and it hurt me cause then it took me a 100 shots plus to get back with my old driver. I’m not a great golfer im solid just broke in to the singles early this year at an 9 pushing 10 handi but I’ve really put a lot of hours in to in the last 16 months I hit 6/7 days a week play a round or 2 a week took lessons and it paid off I was stuck on 13-14 handi for nearly 2 years which is frustrating especially when you start in the 20s and after a few months your knocked of 10 shots to improve a stroke or 2 in 2 years let the ego go and get lessons there’s pros out there that with a couple 2 hour lessons and 2 rounds with them you’ll see a huge change. Especially with people who struggle on the tee I’ve seen people hitting 160 shanking it 5/10 get 30 minutes with a pro and add 20 yards and are landing i the fairway 10-15% more of the time. My coach really helped my swing and I went from bad with irons to good and now my putting and drive are my weak points especially my putting. That’s where I gotta to put the work in now this time next year I’ll be at8 maybe 7 handicap I don’t see me ever breaking that is seriously need to quit my job to break in to the 6 or 7s. Unless I start driving 280 and 210 on my 16 degree I don’t see it happening. So many beginner think to be a good golfer you need to be at par pros start in the 3-5 handicap but the difference between 20 and 10 is like going from 6 to 4. The top pro ofcourse are -5 to -2 on average that’s your tigers and rorys though. So being in the low double digits your a good golfer. When I started getting par more then I bogedy I was having the most fun my best score ever is 70 and I started 3 over through 7 I felt like tiger shooting -5 under through 11 holes granted I lucked a 6 iron in for eagle on par 4 from 120 out and hit 2 nasty iron drives with in a yard or 2 of the pin on 2 par 3s that I had no business doing but the wind favorited me that day.

The putter makes 12. They also came with 5 woods, a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Now not all sets did, but some did, so that makes 17 clubs. So why did they limit it to 14 and when. Just want the education. More the why than the when. And why back 40 years ago, did sets come with more clubs than you could use? Or was the limit different 40 years ago?

The rule should be changed to ten clubs maximum or even only seven. It would the game much more reliant on feel and skill and more fun to watch.
The game is getting quite boring with a club for every single distance and with rounds of 24 under par.

  • @jaymuri6739

if you’re a right hander, I would say bring extra left handed iron, say number 7. If you really play the game you should at least be comfortable enough to play on the other hand. these are for unexpected situations, like being in the edge of pit, tree or whatever. you can drop one of the orons, you reallly dont need all of them, just adjust the power of strike.

14 clubs bc players used carry so many the caddies would have to lug around two bags. Does it help to carry more. Not generally. I generally have more than 14 and will just not use specific clubs, just depends on the course. If it is a competition I will actually remove the clubs.

I know your goal is to sell clubs but you didn’t answer the question, “Why are there 14 clubs?” The abridged answer is that it’s kinda arbitrary. Back in the day, there was no limit and pros played more and more clubs so that they didn’t have to take distance of of clubs for a particular shot. At one point, the governing bodies of golf decided this wasn’t good so they looked at how many clubs were in the bag of the Masters winner that year. It happened to be 28 so they decided, “OK, half that number”.

cole tegano Huh, I looked at a few references online but I can’t confirm that right now. In fact the articles I saw said no one really knows why they settled on 14. But I know I heard that from a reputable source somewhere along the line.

Clearly you need 14 clubs to cover the different distances you need when playing on a golf course. The clubs basically designed to hit different distances. He basically said you need to choose the clubs that are best to your game. He also described the clubs.
      What more do you need?
