    That looks like a neat little project for future repairs. Get an inline fuse holder and solder it to a switch. That way you can use different amperage fuses depending on the circuit, and you don't have to solder directly to the fuse. Then make the spade to go in a common size fuse socket, maybe with bullet connectors so you can swap it out for different size fuse sockets. Once made, the device can be reused whenever needed.

    Good video, that's a quick and easy solution, it helps a lot. I had the same problem on my 1994 Japanese Toyota Corolla (the wipers wouldn't turn off), what I ended up doing was identifying the positive and negative wires that go from the wiper switch to the wiper motor, thus removing the unnecessary wires and leaving the low speed, high speed and the cable that allows the windshield wipers to return to their place when you turn them off... For what I think it is a relay or some chip that was damaged in the command.

    The motor has the controls in it so if goes bad you have no chose but to replace it.

    I had the same problem on my 99 saturn and ended up doing the same fix. I put my toggle switch inline on one of the wires going to the fuse. Sure you have to reach in behind the fuse panel to get at the wires but solder work you had on the fuses.

    Thanks a million for taking the time to video tape this great idea. My daughter has a '92 SL2 with the exact problem your video solves. You've made my year!

    Fortunately they were stuck in the on position. My mom's '94 Saturn SL2 used to be extremely intermittent, a real problem in the rain, which we thought it was in the switch (which was expensive, plus I didn't have a narrow enough shaft to reach the deep torx screws in the steering column). But by chance I ended up discovering (by whacking on the cowling) that it was actually the motor, which wasn't too hard to replace. It's one of the few things that's ever even been replaced in that car, too.

    Efficient and effective repair, safe to by adding the fuse in relay. I keep blow fuses around for things like this myself. Though while it isn't really important since this is a temporary repair you might want to point out in future videos you shouldn't blow on your solder joint to make it harden faster, it can weaken the joint by air pockets or micro fractures from contraction.

    On the s-series voltage goes direct to the wiper motor.

  • @RichpinTv
    @RichpinTv  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can use spade terminals on the switch but you still need to solder the fuse.

  • @RichpinTv
    @RichpinTv  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That would shut it off for sure just a pain putting it back in if you needed them then back out again.

    nice video--i was pleasantly surprised to learn a new trick--i've always used spade connectors, sometimes having to trim them down, what a pain--thanx for the blown fuse tip--

    nice video, if its not shutting off my guess its a short in the wiper control switch / turn signal since your wiper motor works. If you replace that switch/ controler it may work again , I think that would be more simple but to each his own. good video

    Ive found temporary fixes often last years as the cost of ripping the system to bits can be rather frightning lol.

    Thanks for reply. Sorry, forgot to mention my vehicle is a VW transporter T5. I think the motor is fine. Could a switch such as the one in your film could be used to override the main switch?

    Is the whiper controlled by a body control module. I mean, many cars has an ECU that got al the body functions solved, like remote clossing, light dimming, windows liffter control and anti-pinch system, alarm ... etc, Just thinking in turning on and off something in that way could set some type of error code .... Nice idea by the way.

    Hi. My switch works most of the time then will cut out, leaving me with no wipers. Garage says switch is probably okay but that the problem may lie in the electronic control box. To change this is really costly and might not work. I wonder if you can put in a by pass switch to power wipers directly from battery and switch separately from existing switch when it cuts out. As the fault seems to be intermittent, this would give me wipers at the times when normal switching fails

    I'm new to this site.
    I find this video helpful for a related but different problem...I have an old (pre-computer) 1974 Cadillac that keeps blowing windshield wiper fuses, rendering them inoperative. Once a new fuse is installed, the wipers operate momentarily, then the fuse blows again. I suspect a bad switch, but don't know for sure...it could be the wiper motor, too, but I hope not.
    Assuming the motor's good, I want to build an "emergency windshield wiper on/off switch" and attempt to restore the windshield wipers to service. Can you give me any guidance?
    Also, whether it's the switch or the motor -- or both -- that is the culprit, can you suggest a supplier for replacement components for this vehicle?
    Thanks very much for all you do. Good stuff.

    • @RichpinTv
      @RichpinTv  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      To blow the fuse i clipped a test lead to each lug of the fuse then took the other ends of the leads to a 12 volt battery.One lead to the neg post and the other end to the pos post.

    My problem isn't that the wipers won't turn off... Mine is that they won't turn on when I flip the switch... Zero response! I replaced the fuse and STILL nothing! Now I'm trying to locate the wipers motor, because supposedly I have to hit it with a screwdriver handle to get the wipers going. Or at least that's what I read online. 🤔 Hmm.

      Мили Мински don't do that it might just be your windshield wipers switch if you do what he said and it works it's your windshield wipers switch and not your motor

      @chuckpowers5311 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He made another video about checking the switch and motor don't know if it is the same saturn..th-cam.com/video/0KHUxiXn31s/w-d-xo.html
      Keeping it simple if you just want to know where your motor is try Google (make year model etc)....should be close to the firewall ie the wall behind the engine where your brake booster sits...find it give it a few taps! With the switch in the on position.
