It’s not, NOT about drugs. It includes drugs, but it’s deeper than the substances or things he uses to distract and sedate. It’s the cause of the need to sedate.
It’s also about codependency, love, and trauma.

The line "adding shadows to the walls of the cave" is referencing Plato's Cave, an allegory where prisoners are chained in a dark cave, and their only concept of reality is by looking at shadows on a wall, which aren't acurate depictions of the world.
The song is about a codependent, toxic relationship that Hozier can see is bad for both of them, but they can't get out of it. Instead, they distract themselves from it, and "add shadows" basically pulling themselves further from the reality of the relationship.

@@GingerKC Are you saying that the reference to Plato's cave is wrong? That is a fairly accepted reading of that line.

Hozier is one of the greatest writers of the last 100 years, and it’s wild he’s not been recognized as such. This entire album, and the next, are absolute masterpieces.

Many of Hozier’s songs are social commentaries on history and/or the state of the world. Often dark and haunting, his songs definitely stay with you. And I’ve heard him say in interviews that he’s not interested in writing pop songs or hits. Take Me to Church was a massive hit , especially for a first release, but it’s a scathing look at modern religion when you really study it.

I would recommend, In the Woods Somewhere, from Hozier as well. Very cinematic imagery but also narrative driven.

"Adding shadows to the walls of the Cave" is a reference to Plato's Cave. Very interesting theory about how we perceive reality. Theres some videos here on YT that explain it ;)

Btw im not doing the theory justice with this TLDR haha, but I dont wanna spoil anything.

You should look up the meaning behind “adding shadows to the walls of the cave” - its in reference.to the Allegory of the Caves by Plato’s work. Hozier is one of the most underrated lyricist, there’s usually a philosophical meaning behind his words.

Seriously, if this is your reaction to one of his song, then when you listen to the entire album, all you'll do is pause wonderstruck, cause they're just that good

Funny how He looks like Jesus Christ? Thanks for the like Man. It does take a bit of detective work to figure out the meaning of some of His stuff. I got hooked on TMTChurh, then I converted to Hozier

COME ON.....! Stop stopping the music every 10 sec to repeat it and show that you are amazed with the concept. Just let it run for a while. People understand what he's saying IF you'll let it run for more than 8 lines. This vid is not showcasing a song with a reaction occasionally thrown in. It is you blathering, in love with what you're saying. Just hush for a bit and when the chorus comes in then MAYBE make a comment. Don't analyze EVERY line.

That is a song where there is so much depth in every line. It makes sense to pause and react in the places he does, because those are some heavy words with so much meaning behind them. He isn't pausing to explain the words, but to give his thoughts on them.
