As others have pointed out, a few of the lyrics were wrong, but in this song he compares all of his past loves to trees in the wood where he chooses to linger to feel the remnants of their love and when a new love comes, she is the flame that sets the wood afire, he is both sad that he cannot feel the love of the past and delighted that he is free of living in the past, a gift the fire of new love gives him and he worships.
The man is a poet. There's nothing much else one can say. Heartbreaking and beautifully melancholic while also uplifting in a way that only Hozier can do it.
I went to his concert back in 2019, he opened with this song and I got chills and cried
Hozier's romantic metaphors are as mesmerizing as his voice. So many layers to discover and enjoy. Love your reaction.
His lyrics are just amazing, I absolutely love the wood and fire analogy it's so warm and vibrant. That with his voice and the soft guitar is just magical...

I am so happy you checked out this song!!!! However, this video got so many lyrics wrong and kind of lost the essence of the true meaning. That might be the reason for you being confused. He has quite a number of word plays in this track.
Wonder if it would be helpful for him to listen to the music while reading from the lyrics off genius or smth

I highly recommend some more of his self titled album. From Eden is one of my favorite songs of his, so is Someone New.
Someone new (and From Eden) are incredible songs. Then again Hozier has so many fantastic songs it’s hard to pick just one
This is an amazing song tho have to say that the lyrics are inaccurate, glad someone caught it and commented the correct lyrics. It's amazing what he does with layered meanings and alliteration, it's such a delight in the mouth to sing it just to form those words
One of my absolute favorites, and I am now wondering now if I would love it as much if I had first heard it while seeing the wrong lyrics. So many gorgeous lyrics and incredible word play in this one.
