What I love & hate on my Volkswagen T4 Autosleeper Trophy.

  • John from To the garage gives a full review of his Volkswagen T4 Autosleeper Trophy called Betsy. Why would a confirmed Jaguar nut who has previously owned T2 Bay windows and T25 / T3 Vanagon, be interested in this? After all its the 'conventional VW van!. Because its a really interesting and cool conversion on a T4 base, and it also has an interesting 5 cylinder engine. But it's not all positives, there are a few fundamental issues with the design of this vehicle. Join us as we look at the Base vehicle. Cab layout and ergonomics. The body conversion and interior fittings and facilities.
    For anyone who is interested here is the gearshift extension that I used and mention in the video.

    Hi John, good tour, just about sums the early Trophy up completely. I've had my '94 Trophy (2.4 diesel) for four years now and have the same love/hate relationship with it as you with yours! The Autosleeper bits are really well built (too well built if you need to remove them for repairs!). I would argue that there is plenty of storage space, its just all full of cushions for the bed! We have overnighted in ours but, at 6foot 2inches tall, there really isn't enough room. However, I was only looking for a day van when I bought this and, with a shower and toilet and all the domestic equipment, this has to be possibly THE BEST day van for the size, you can get. I mean, I've got a loo and I can park it in Tescos!!
    Lack of power is a problem, nothing basically wrong with mine, just runs out of puff on anything like a decent hill. There's a turbo sitting on the garage floor though..... soon as the weather warms up......
    Truthfully, I just love it, I won't be getting rid of it any time soon.
    Looking forward to seeing what else you do with yours.

      Go for it Louis. Although we are driving an A class at the moment as our needs have changed. If I return to a high top, I would be straight back to a trophy👍

      Ha ha. Well you cant have the American. day van and the camper van! Or can you?🤔. I wonder if anyone has ever done a V8 transplant into A T4? That would take some serious angle grinder work!

    Hi great vid very informative 😊
    These vans look really great for there size
    Just wondered that because of the extra length
    Are they fitted with rear steadies to use when parked at camp ?

    Hi, great video and break down of all the aspects. Do you know if it would be possible to fit a towbar with that rear overhang, only for dinghies, nothing too heavy. Thanks

      I have seen a trophy with a towbar whether it's a good idea, I couldn't say?

      I Guess you could try Autosleeper themselves. No idea what availability would be like on older models like this, but at least its something they used on several models of this era rather than unique to the trophy

    Seems like the large majority of T4 camper vans have non-turbo 2.4L diesel engines, with those with the 2.5L TDI being fairly rare. Realize that the TDI is more powerful, but is this offset by lower fuel economy than the non-turbo?

    I am watching this again. I saw one last year on sale for £18k in good shape. Is that a fair price. To live on it full time. Will this too cold becuse of the windows?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi FRANtastic Vanlife✋ Its at. the top end of realistic pricing but a) There are not so many Autosleeper Trophy out there to choose from b) prices still seem to be climbing for camper vans as more people decide to look after their own holidays and accommodation in the wake of COVID 19. 'rear' windows are all plastic double glazed units with the exception of the sliding door glass which is a sliding glass unit, and the blinds are silvered, so insulation in the rear of the van is pretty good. We had an external Thermal cover for the windscreen and cab door windows. The combination of. these plus the Trim blown air heating made Betsy quite comfortable on. the few cold nights I have spent in her. admittedly I don't think I have spent a night in her that was below 5 degrees C.

      @@ToTheGarage I reckon in 2 years time when covid restrictions totally end and people go back to holidays, demand for vans and campervans will die down. Demand and supply...

    OK good vid...but my question is "what about those many GASBOTTLES (8 ) in background ? " Yours or neighbors ? And what are the uses ? Sorry for my curiosity . Best regards ...Udo / the Islander.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question!😁
      Hi Udo. Those 8 gas bottles are connected to my house. The village we live in is too remote to be linked to mains gas supply.
      So the central heating and hot water relies on bottled gas. We have a woodturning Stove as well though so we are pretty self sufficient.

    Hi, I have a wonderful Trophy, much upgraded by his Japanese first owner. He skinned the entire body in white PVC (he didn't like cream), added an air-conditioning fan in the cabin roof, electric controls for the windows, a high end fold down TV DVD player in the driver's cabin and had a children's slide out bed installed above the driver. I've added a rear-view camera and parking sensors to the front bumper. Oh yes its an automatic petrol model with electronic control.
