Only a person without decency & without manners would present a gift to another person, attaching strings to it. A gift, to be real, needs to come from the heart. A Mezuzah is a sacred thing. If I were given one, I would treasure it, affixing it to the door according to Tradition. I would be honoured to place one on my door. There is a universality connected to the Creator that goes beyond being Jewish or Catholic.

I would rather have a Mezuzah from a Rabbi than a valuable jewel any day of the week, whether the jewel was going to be displayed or stuck in a drawer, and whether the Mezusah would be affixed to my door or safely stored as a sacred item until I decided what to do. The beginning of the story describes people's state of ignorance regarding "value", but story's conclusion makes perfect sense. Simple perhaps, but thought provoking.
