I was under the impression that you can only touch someone of the opposite gender if they are your spouse, and even then, not in front of other people ??

You are correct that in most of the Orthodox Jewish community that modesty (tznius) is strictly observed. In Reform communities like Temple Israel, as well as Conservative, Renewal and Reconstructionist communities, it is not normally practiced.
