- You've probably seen a mezuzah outside a Jewish home, but have you ever seen inside this holy and sacred object to the text inside? In this video I'm going to share what's inside a mezuzah and what words of Torah are written on the scroll.

All 3 of my children went to Chabad pre-school and then public school.
Set a solid foundation.. for that age!!

A couple years ago me and my family moved to a new house. Apparently the owners before us were Jewish because we have a Mezuzah installed in our door! We never knew what it was until I started learning about Jewish culture and found out.

The same is done in Catholicism. Catholics put a mini cross in every corner of their home. The also keep a rosary in their kitchen.

Thanks Marian. I didn't realize that it's usual to attach them to every doorframe in the home, I'd thought they were just attached to the frame of the front door.

I'm going to have to disagree. The more educated I became on Judaism, the more resentful I felt towards gews.

Also note that if you dont actually have one, you can make one yourself!! Also only your front door needs it!!
Scroll seems to have multiple cracks throughout many of the letters... Namely the large daled...
So, are there specific rituals you do or rules when replacing one? I know that some of the stricter branches have rules about not tarnishing or discarding things with God's name written on them.

What do I do if I were to purchase a home or clean a purchased home for a realtor if we have to take it off the wall?? Is there anything specific I can do with it, someone told me to throw them away but I haven't. I have them in a box in my trunk.

This might be a ridiculous question, but Google isn't very helpful. Is it every possible to find items such as this -- and other ritual items second-hand? (I've seen that vegan ones aren't necessarily considered Kosher).
I love that question and i would try Facebook marketplace especially if you live in a jewish area or have a local jewish group on Facebook!

The case can be reused passed along etc... The scroll needs to be new, because they need to be exact copies of the original text. As it is the revealed word of G-d. Any inaccuracies make them void. Since they are natural ink on animal skins the scrolls degrade and the letters lose ink making them imperfect. This is also the reason vegan scrolls are not Kosher. It has to be on animal skin not vegetable. The old scrolls must be buried, not thrown out.
@@ellenvillian5790 In theory, though, if the text weren't degraded? Like, if someone were just moving to a smaller house and didn't need as many anymore and they were still newish, would that still be an issue?
@@misplacedangeleno2647I wouldn’t think so. My Rabbi teaches us not to make our own decisions about “what’s written in stone.” HOWEVER, most of us do that. I personally would feel better having the Mezuzahs up when I moved in somewhere even if the scroll was not perfect, (I wouldn’t check, pu pu pu… ) Not having them up would make me feel like I was tempting fate. I live in The Borscht Belt, The Jewish Alps. Upstate New York in The Catskills where Dirty Dancing and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel are set. My Mom is from one of the first Jewish families to settle here in the late 1890s. When I was a kid a very well know and well respected Rabbi stopped at our house every summer for a donation for his charity. After my Mother wrote out a check the Rabbi asked “Did you just paint your house?” My Mom said “No. Last year.” He said his goodbyes and left. We went inside and My Mother turned white “Oh My G-d!!! And ran back out to the door.
We hadn’t put the Mezuzah back up a year ago! Jewish guilt is always handed out quietly. The worst kind is left for you to figure out.

It feels good to know that I can still be a part of a faith community being a trans woman. Like all your videos, it makes me want to learn more about Judaism and consider converting.
