War of the Stumps | WHO WILL WIN?

  • Giant nightmare stumps, stubborn stumps from hell, and all manner of back-breaking trial and error as we attempt to extract them from their mighty grips on the earth. Watch us wage war on the biggest stumps on our homestead (some over six feet in diameter!) with little more than an old tractor and chain, a chainsaw, and good old-fashioned blood, sweat, and tears. We even needed to bring in a secret weapon at the end...

When using the chain to pull the stumps, try placing the hook of the chain around the side of the stump, and then pull. It will have the effect of twisting and pulling the stump at the same time.

We have a homestead in SW Wisconsin, and have been clearing land for years. I feel your pain! The land is pasture so we just cut them flush with the ground - many hundreds of them! None as big as your larger ones though! We would have liked to hire a dozer or excavator, but didn't have the money. The vast majority of the stumps are now rotted-out, and we could likely till if we wanted to, but as a pasture it's fine the way it is 😊

Just for the future----there's a Aussie who has a TH-cam Channel who does rock blasting, and once on a farm he took down a standing tree plus the root ball plus dug a hole for a pond, plus chopped up most of the wood, all with one blast done in less than a hour. Just an idea to keep in your back pocket.
But, there's something to be said for hard work. You guys certainly practice that policy.
When does your dog arrive? You are getting one, no?

I used to dig some holes in the stump, then fill them with diesel ,
Pile some sticks up around the stump and burn them out

Great job guys! I'm so glad to see the excavator in the end. I dug out a coupe small stumps (around 30cm in diameter) and had a bear of time with my tiny tractor. When we needed 20 removed ranging in size from 20-60cm we opted to hire the excavator. What he was able to do in 2 days was amazing, all out and all buried in a giant hole. Filled back in and nice and smooth. Your orchard looks great, and that apple looked delish! Looking forward to the next video. Take care.

Thanks for the lovely comment, Nathan. A big hole is a great idea - and one we thought of as well, but only too late! We've tried burning the giant stumps a few times to no avail, so it looks like we'll have to get the excavator back in. Sound like you had the right foresight. Thanks again :)

I don't know your economic context (but) renting an excavator for a few days would have made quick work of it. Your farm is beautiful! and will afford you a wonderful life. God bless.

Next time use a bigger tire and wheel. Biggest one you got. Gives more lift works much better. That one was just too small. I use tires of my truck that are 35 inches tall I don't know what that is in metric but it's about waist high on a tall man

Good idea! Unfortunatly that's the biggest we had on hand. But you're right, larger would have given us a better chance!

A much less labor intensive way to get rid of those stumps is get an oil drum cut the top and bottom out, vent it around the bottom, drill some big holes into the top of your stump set the barrel on top and burn it out. Use small wood like branches and small blocks so it burns hot and stays going. You need to drive out the moisture from that big stump. Just keep feeding the fire and it'll burn the stump out enough to cover it and let nature finish the job. Best part is no giant bills for equipment Thanks for the chill videos they help me relax. Keep it up :)

Great job but next time don’t touch the stumps. Shred and compost.
