Seriously though, I am conflicted...I tried really hard to make shep look like me, and a part of me likes to do so when I have the option to help immersion. But Shep is already a character and making Ryder look the same would mess with my head...but I can't see myself using standard Ryder face. Too fratboyish. I'm probably gonna end up spending over an hour just making that decision and then some more actually trying to get the face to look the way I decide lol.

Perhaps they're technically a step up, but the facial animations do look way more awkward than in the trilogy or any of the Dragon Age games.They must have tried something new for this game, because in Inquisition the lips definitely didn't stick out like that on certain sounds. There's something very strange about them, and they're going to become a joke for sure.

while playing ME, even ME1 i never felt that awkward like i felt now. there is just something strange and weird about their faces and the arms while moving.
it's like now that they have more "power" over the expressions of the characters they tried to show off... and they overdid it.
just because you can do something technically doesnt mean you have to do it all the time.
I hope this is early stage, or if it is final that it grows on me, otherwise I would feel strange the hole time playing this.
I just noticed there have also been several instances we've seen where the expressions don't seem to convey the emotions they were intending, which is something that's pretty unusual for an AAA game released in the last 10 years, in my experience.

I like that they got rid of Paragon and Renegade options. Having different tones encourages different dialog choices in my opinion.

It never really mattered in the first place. You either chose to be a renegade or paragon then chose the dialog option for that alignment. The games pretty much encouraged you to do so.
Plus you don't know that using different tones with different characters won't affect the way they interact with you.
Apparently it will not be possible to have every character "like" you. It seems to depend on how you react to them and even IF you speak with other characters can have negative influences, no matter what you're talking about. I'm not sure how this is going to work out in the final game, but it sounds interesting and frustrating at the same time for some of us who just want to unite their squad.
I partially agree. The thing is that it's unclear if they got rid of "speak/dialoge" checks... if the answer is yes, then I am really bothered, since this game just becoming more of an action game...

Cheesy Popcorn they don't necessarily don't have them. Ryder was the closest so maybe they just thought it more convenient or maybe it was just those few people that didnt have working ones. it showed other people with scanners. many different reasons why they could have asked ryder.
It's a tutorial level, how else are you going to learn about scanning?
Ertwin123 Well it is only fair that if I should criticize I should pose my own potential solution. They could simply remove the engineers? A nearby asari doctor cries out that the power generator is malfunctioning and the team sent to help has been cut off by falling debris. Ryder, thinking quickly, tells the asari to get to the console while he/she uses his/her scanner to find the malfunctioning portion at which point he/she tells her to shut it down until the engineers arrive. It feels less like you're being led by the hand and more that you are taking the initiative, at least in my own unprofessional opinion.

I think the concern is that, if the defaults look that bad, then how good can you make them look in the character creator? We haven't seen the character creator yet, people might feel less concerned about this if we knew that was decent.
Here's the thing though, male Ryder looks pretty close to the original model, and the female one looks like she had a shovel-to-the-face treatment.

Honestly Sarah looks good. Though for me there is a small issue with the cheekbones, which only needs simple tweaking. Honestly people are so judgemental over appearances. I actually like how bioware as included some minor "imperfections" to character design, it's more realistic.

Seriously does anyone properly remember ME3 facials in general and specifically on anything other than vanilla sheps? Also other games of the time such as Fallout or Dragon Age? This is miles ahead and while it's not on Uncharted 4/Horizon level it's certainly impressive progress that just needs some tweaks. People are acting like they reused ME1 facial ani

Ivor Omerzo Agreed. Also, I've been watching HZD and it too had lip-sync and facial animation issues. And that is only a 40 hour or so game where human interaction is limited and Aloy spends most of her time alone. MEA will be 100+ hours with tons of interaction, so it makes sense the animations would not be as crisp.
I loved my femshep...did she look totally realistic? No. but it's a game. It was ok. She was smokin' hot though...left room for imagination. The new characters (apart from Rydad) look like plastic. By trying to make them more realistic they've drifted off into uncanny valley territory...but that's just my opinion. Maybe they will grow on me, maybe not. About the story though: If I didn't know anything about the "big bad" in Andromeda that initial video really would have me intrigued...but since we already know every squad mate and enemy in the game (apart from 1, yes trust me)...it's a bit disappointing.

Honestly the games people are comparing it to use extensive motion capture to get those facial animations. Which can't be done with a game like Mass Effect if you want the player to be able to tweak their character's appearance down to the finest facial detail. Yes, some mocap can be used but nowhere near the same level games with preset characters can use.

Something I noticed is after Scott was finished with the Asari doctor, little notifications on the left of the screen came up ("Asari" and something else). This seems good, because I think it's like a log of information / lore that you gather about races and stuff like that.

So the costumization would have to be costumizing Dady Ryder, with projections how the Ryder Sibblings look like.

im curious about the production process? the facial animations look very strange but complex at the same time seems like they added lots of facial joints for expressions but then hand animated the expressions looks very robotic almost like a puppet. the facial rigging looks very good though like you can see scrunching of the face alot of pinching and pulling to show expressions looks like it has potential they just need to smooth out the animations.

Okay. After seeing some of the earlier videos I was starting to really get worried about how good this game would be. But this has got me pumped now. The all-important ME story and character interactions are looking pretty good. Not regretting my pre-order.

Another thing to point out. Why doesn't Bioware know how to utilise their game engines? I keep seeing this problem in all of their games. They didn't know what to do with Unreal Engine 3, and they don't know what to do with Frostbite. No matter what engine they work with, hair looks like plastic and skin looks like rubber. Their animation skeletons are either incomplete or untuned, resulting in exaggerated motions that make no sense. What's the point of going for engine overkill if your 3D artists aren't talented enough to utilise them? Can anyone honestly tell me that anything they've seen in these 13 minutes looks even remotely as good as the stuff that DICE does with Frostbite? Or what The Coalition does with Unreal Engine 4?

Nobody was saying its the most important aspect. Listen to the man, he's right. They should've stayed with the old engine. Now they have a new one and have to learn same shit again for no reason. Also, it seems to me that facial animations were better in previous me trilogy.
ChaoticMartian Graphics, perhaps. But story? No. Not even Naughty Dog can craft a story quite like BioWare can. And besides, I don't care what year it is, I'd rather play an 8-bit game with an amazing story than a 4-hour pointless slugfest with amazing graphics (literally any first person shooter of the last five years).
Actually I thought they had great attention to detail with the skin of Ryder. You can see he's kinda sweaty and there's some wrinkles, I think it looks really good! But yeah, I've never been a fan of Biowares faces lmao

the eyes and facial animations look pretty good here compared to other videos we've seen, particularly Alec's. i imagine that means that the rest will just be fixed in a patch before release.

TickTak77 It doesn't make any sense. A movie would never show their opening. A TV shows wouldn't put out their pilot just to build hype. Mass Effect 3 ruined the opening by making the demo the opening mission. Totally ruined the experience of the Reaper Invasion.

Well. Alec Ryder looks fantastic. His facial animation is the best of all shown.
That being said, there is still old like ME2-dated facial animation on less important characters, like ship captain (notice the lip movement)
But I still want this game, at least for these 15 minutes of very familiar atmosphere of ME-game

I agree, you can tell they really focused mainly on getting the look and details of the main characters. I don't think I'll every be happy with the default Ryders though. I just think more work could be done on both the male and female. Although many complain about Sara, I think Scott's face needs fixing. Just something off. I just don't get a sense of real emotion when he tries to express something. It also could be that the siblings are young and now that I'm older I feel like I want a character that resembles me now. Its funny, cause I was fine with playing Shepard who was older than me at the time when I originally played.
I still wish Bioware went with a more realistic look to the game. However, considering today how many developers go that route, this animation choice works to set the company and the game series apart from other competitors.
I would hope that Bioware will look to improve on the details, like hair and skin and maybe one day the facial animations for all characters. Other than that I am so ready to play this game.

Going by the fact they refer to the characters by their original names, I take it customization will be appearance only. However, it may also be that the game says their first names if you leave it at default. it may simply say "Ryder" if you are able to make a different first name.

Wow-I like the way Ryder and Liam are leaning against the glass with their hand on a hip in the entry vehicle to the planet-sort like sightseeing on a cruise ship or a bus. Not strapped in or anything just standing around while the enter the atmosphere...super realistic and believable.....surprise they fell out. I'm being super facetious btw

Well, let see here, change it to where that wasn't the case. It seem that everyone is defending Bioware. the actual reason is because Bioware is stupid. Just like they put Ashley or Kaidan out of action for 2/3 of Mass Effect 3.
I think they are going to do the same thing as they did in Mass Effect 3 with the sibling won't be around till later in the game. Thought why couldn't the player also pick the gender of the other siblings? For example, a female Ryder could have a sister?
ThatUndeadLegacy If you look at some of the videos that have been put out it seems like both siblings can be alive and well at the same time, I think there's been clips of cutscenes with both of them.
