From experience: put up osb or plywood over the entire wall and then add 1/4" drywall over that. Had my kitchen redone and the contractor went right through the wall into the pocket door. Destroyed the door and had to replace the door which took about 6 months to show up as it had to be custom made to match the rest of the house. Those metal studs are not strong enough to support shelving or cabinets. Having something solid behind it will help because you won't need to worry about hitting those little metal studs when hanging stuff. If you sheath the wall before you add the rest of the framing you will also have your backer for drywall. This is how I had the "mistake" fixed and have had no issues. The repairs were done by a different contractor due to insurance reasons and the contractor said it was the best idea he heard of for pocket doors.
@@RiffleVFXportfolio probably the drywall or wood to metal screws akin to those in the kit. I have a box of them in the shed for when I do work in commercial environments that tend to use metal studs.
Well, I can see now why my contractor wanted to talk me out of a pocket door! As it turned out, a regular door worked better in the space, but I knew he had that crafty look in his eye!!!😺
Thanks for the video Matt. I have a pocket door going from my kitchen into my laundry room and have had it for 30+ years. Evidently it was hung correctly! Thanks for the education you always provide us!❤
This is such a helpful and clear tutorial! The step-by-step instructions make installing a pocket door frame kit seem so much easier! Thanks for sharing your expertise 👍👍
Hi I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and seen all the remodeling you done in your old house and I wanted to make a suggestion. I think it would be interesting if you could tell us how all the remodeling in your old house have raised the value of it or if it even raised the value of it! Cause I remember what it looked like before and after you made those excellent changes to it! 😊 keep up the great work!
I had a pocket bathroom door, in a former house, 20 years ago. It was the 1st one, I ever had. It took some getting used to, but after a bit, I really liked it. It didn't take up valuable space in the room and worked fine, never had any issues with it
I did not stop watching and have enjoyed the helpful videos you have been putting out since moving however am so excited for a new project. I like how you beak it down in terms I can understand.
I’ve been meaning to make this suggestion for a while. You always wear the same well loved ballcap in your videos. You should make one that says the fixer on it!
Lord have mercy, I had no clue they still made pocket doors! I still have my parents house, which was built in 1954, and it has a pocket door. I assumed the newest similar concept was the barn door sliders.
I have an old Victorian house, which was build over 130 years ago, with a double pocket doors in the study/office, made of solid oak. And a 10 ft ceiling ... Can you imagine to take those doors out to fix railing.
me just going :) at the memory of the time in high school where a huge glass sliding door burst into a billion pieces out of nowhere, that place was jank though you'll be fine im sure. also laughed at the idea of being "its the worst doing this alone!" meanwhile the camera is right there being held lol
Cheap tip for people doing this solo. They sell these little inflatable bags for both construction and locksmiths for pretty darn cheap that you can slide under the door and inflate to lift the door up the tiny amount making it way easier.
Maybe you don’t have any friends because people hear your name is “The Fixer” and they think it’s probably better to steer clear of you. 😂 Just kidding you’re a “Good Fella”
I love your videos I just wanted to say unless you are putting a pocket door in a laundry room, pantry, or closet, you are committing a war crime. Putting one in a bathroom should constitute crimes against humanity.
just think . the average door takes up 9 SQ FT. 2 bedroom house. 2 for bedroom, 3 for closets, front back garage laundry room, 2 bath. thats 11 times 9 thats a 10 X 10 room you cant use. or a third bath.
Dear Mr. Fixer, I apologize for this question being off topic and selfish!!! But that's how I roll. I got a beat up old "barn door" that's 40"x82"x1.5" T&G, with cross boards holding it together on the inside / backside. It was face mounted on the outside (swinging out) with face mounted gate hinges. A pregnant 10 year old racoon could squeeze through the gaps. I trimmed off the rot on the edges leaving me with 36"x80". The jamb is 10" deep and crookeder than a politician. I wanted to move the slab to the center of the jamb cause the concrete foundation is crumbling on the outside edge allowing vermin, illegals and Democrats to possibly sneak in through the bottom. My tiny garbage, deplorable MAGA type brain won't allow me to figure out how the holi heck I can hang this "door" :(. Any suggestions? And pleaseeeeeee be nice. lol

Never knew there was 1/4” inch drywall. That’s a good idea
How did you attach the OSB?

That was an excellent description of how to alter the header for a smaller door.

First class information, i have no intention of installing a pocket door, but your video definitely gave me the confidence to have a go. Thank you
A glass door with boys! Brave.
Love your videos.

Thanks for taking the time to hang that door. I love the soft close feature.... Who knew?

Seems like a nice kit. I hope you make a episode when you put walls and the final glas door. Thx 👍🏻
Good job Matt. I watched the framing video earlier and wondered how the door would work. Thanks
Another informative video for when, or if, I ever need to remodel. Thanks, Matt!
Is there anything that you can't do? I never knew how these worked. Thanks for the video.
I love pocket doors! Thank you.
Wow very good stuff Matt, Pocket doors are very cool
Great video I’m actually going to be doing this soon so that was a lot of help. Also the Eminem reference killed me lol.
Very useful video and perfectly explained. Many thanks.
That was a well done video. Easy to follow and well thought out. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing! Always enjoy your channel!
Thanks for posting Matt

Nice work, looking forward to the next one. 👍😊
His videos remind me of Bob Villa show and I mean that in a very good way
I wish I had a project to practice on! 🎉
Well done.
Nice job, thx !
Nice work
The Fixer 👍
Do you need a different rail bracket for glass?

Curious if a pocket door from a house built in the early 60s can be fixed without taking the drywall down. They are both off track.
Yes
@ care to share how that’s done?

Just here to say I stuck around for the Eminem reference. I would’ve left without saying anything but my guilty conscience wouldn’t let me
Am I the only one who caught that he was singing Guilty Conscience by Eminem in the bloopers?

First!!! I thought you were doing door with glass? Modifying a door to add glass next video?
Hey! I was just using this as a sample door to show people how to hang it. Glass door isn't going in until the finish. Thanks for watching.
