I love the aesthetic of film. I tried digital but I was spending so much time trying to get the settings right that it just wasn't fun for me. I find that I take more time with film and enjoy it it so much more.

Loved the video. The editing was on point and it flowed well.
Although the film prices are increasing I'm trying not to stress too much on it. The act of shooting is so calming and enjoyable that it outweighs the price increases for me. I've been shooting digital as well but I find that I've only printed 1 digital photo and a hell of a lot more film photos. I think it's just that my film photos hold a lot more value to me in terms of the engagement I put to make them.

Keep in mind, everything has gone up, including the price of fuel to deliver a truckload of film. On par with inflation? I don’t know. I still have two rolls in the fridge, over 15 years old. Maybe I’ll shoot one this summer.

Great really great vid. Models were great also. I don’t know if she is a working model but, think she would do very well or as well as any of the top models if discovered. Film fade away? Might be hype but some are saying it is growing a little. I think some digital artist will gravitate to the film. Great photos! Loved the Kennedy paper prop.

Glad your mini YT hiatus was productive. I set up some shoots this month and next month with some models here in Central Japan. Going to use the Pentax, Hasselblad and the Linhof Technika for them. And yes… film prices are crazy here too. Especially the 4x5 color film. I bought Portra 160 which was so expensive. I ended up getting half as much Portra and bought some FP4 and Provia 100F to cover what I needed. I do think this is the new normal and prices will only continue to rise in the future.

  • @okyeabuddyguy
    @okyeabuddyguy ปีที่แล้ว

It's not just the price of film that hurts, it's the development and high quality lab scans that hurt.
If you buy film in bulk, roll it yourself, and pay the upfront cost to get a high quality optical scanner/flatbed/dslr/mirrorless scanning setup then you can offset the film cost and scan cost quite a bit. Alot of people don't have the space nowadays to setup a dark room.
Overall with a bit of upfront cost, and some dedication to the scanning workflow and bulk rolling you can basically cut your costs in half.
Nowadays I mostly shoot digital for my street and landscape stuff, it allows me so much freedom to experiment and create and learn so much faster and without the costs involved with film. However, when I've found a scene I really like, maybe an architectural or landscape shot, or I've figured out a particular technique or series I want to shot and I've figured out exactly how I want it to go, then I will often return to do a re-shoot on film.

Interesting that here in the UK that the Ilford prices have remained reasonable whereas Kodak, and by extension the rebranded Kodak films (Lomography for example), prices are heading north at an alarming rate. It will not put me off shooting colour, afterall, the large and medium format film aesthetic cannot be matched. Not to mention the fun of the process.
I just hope that these price increases do not put off those looking to get into film. It is interesting to see that the price of film cameras, particularly medium and large format, seems to be returning to 'normal' after the pandemic price spike.

Pentax is said to be making film cameras again. Pentax is in a good place if they play their cards right. Keep the K-Mount just the way it is. So they can still make DSLR and they can make a SLT camera like the Sony A-Mount cameras or a mirrorless with the K-Mount and they can make a SLR camera. The best part all your lens work on any of these bodies.

I completely understand people don't like the price hikes, however, at the same time, Kodak is a company that is here to make a profit, and as a company, they should charge what the market can bear. Film has been in such overwhelmingly high demand, that up until the last couple months, it's been hard to find. Hopefully, the price will come down a little to bring some people that have left back, but at the same time, it's still pretty much flying off the shelves, so while some people have been priced out of shooting film, clearly not everybody has. Give it about 6 months and see where the prices are then.

After shooting digital for about 4-5 years; Picking up my first film camera ended up showing me a whole new side of photography. I was able to take what I've learned and implement and reinvent how I shoot with film.
Loved this video, thank you Mike! One of the best photographers out there.

I do think digital and film have their place. Digital is good to practice and get really good at your craft fast because its so dam cheap. But once you have those ninja skills start shooting on film. The reason why film in the long run is better is because negatives and slides exist in the real world.
When it comes to digital having digital files and dealing with hard drives and even uploading to the cloud won't last as long as film.
There is a photographer her on TH-cam he's in Florida he's a Sony shooter. I can't remember his name but he did not plug in one of his hard drives for over a year it was a SSD drive and the drive died when he tried to use it.
A little off topic. Nintendo Wii U last gen console a lot of those consoles are no longer working. The memory in those consoles if they are not plugged in for at least one year that memory goes bad. That kind of memory is called nano.
Old school consoles all the way up to Gameboy advanced use chips on a board they hold memory different any will out last all these newer consoles.
People are asking how long their Nintendo Switch consoles and games will last I'm hearing 20 or 30 years. Who knows might last longer.

@Phillip Banes I heard of the Blu-Rays being really good I forgot about that.
But hard drivers and flash memory is a huge issue.
If you go the Blu-Ray route I would invest in a few Blu-Ray burners and keep a few old computers around.
Who knows what input devices computers will support or if they still will be making Blu-Ray drives by then.

Lovely images… plus, re. film costs, I sold all digital gear and went back to film (35mm and 120) but the prices now are RIDICULOUS! To the point that, yet again, I’m having doubts. May move to BW only, despite the colour of film being the main attraction over digital, to me! Come on, Kodak, don’t throttle the golden goose. Or Portra.

I shoot both digital and film. Digital allows me to be more loose with my practice, try different things, but I’m very fussy about the shots I take on film. Wind…Click…£$$£$££

Does anyone’s Pentax 67 have a battery drain issue? It’s so annoying. I wish a company would make a modern day film camera that could be purchased new and had a manufacture’s warranty.

Call it illogic, nostalgia, "Boomer", whatever.......the only non-(well-known) professional photography I watch on TH-cam, are film shooters. I love the cameras, the process, and the 'look' of film.
