If anyone is wondering, does he sounds this good live. Well, he absolutely does. I saw him live in Haliburton, Ontario in Canada in April and his skill and artistry is genius. An amazing night I will not forget. I love that he is wearing the Canadian flag inside a heart in this video. I guess he loved being here as much as we loved having him. Yet another brilliant Steely Dan cover. It stirs the emotions.
Becker and Fagan made use of the best session musicians available, recorded dozens upon dozens of takes, and had access to the best studio recording equipment in the world to perfect their sound... and my man Kent reproduces every, single nuance and syncopation on a single instrument, without missing a beat. I'm blown away yet again.
Yes, truly amazing. But, he didn't reproduce "every single nuance and syncopation on a single instrument." There's a second guitar at times and a percussion part.
In my opinion, Kent is in the top five of all time best acoustic guitarists. Right up there with Mike Dawes, Alex Misko, John Gomm, and Tommy Emmanuel. Kent is the most musical of them all. The complete package. His timing is impeccable.
"I cried when I wrote this song. Sue me if I play too long." One of my favorite Steely Dan songs. Thank you, Kent; your playing amazes me and brings joy to my day.
They got a name for the winners in the world...Kent Nishimura IS the expanding man; sounds getting sweeter, funkier, more nuanced, and refined with each video. Bravo, virtuoso Kent!
Kent, I've been playing for over 50 years and have never seen such incredible accuracy and execution to a song that is so difficult to master. You are a true champion of guitar and hope you continue to share your amazing talent with the world!
Sad to think that the Kents of 50 years hence are going to have to find their inspiration digging through the rubble of auto tuned, three chord, computer loops.
once again, I couldnt' believe what I heard was played by one person.. .. the bass , melody, druming and comping... but then I knew it was Kent, and it all made sense.. i doubted anyone could do steely Den this good.
I really hope there are musicians out there that can appreciate how special this young man’s talents are, and that this is not a normal expression of musical prowess. Just WOW!
Who would he be competing with? Genuine question, as they are people I want to be listening to. Maybe Tuck Andress, Jerry Reed, Al Di Meola, Chet Atkins, Laurence Juber, and Mark Knopfler?
Trying to arrange and play just 4 bars of this would be out of reach for most people - even half decent guitarists. But to be able to arrange it and then play nearly 8 minutes of it flawlessly from start to finish is totally mind blowing. I’m always in awe of your playing and talent👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Kent's renditions of Steely Dan are spectacular. They demonstrate not just how much of a virtuoso Kent is, but also the stunning jazz layered song structures of Fagen and Becker. Bought the album Aja when I was 16 and Deacon Blues remains a great work of art. Thanks Kent!
The fingerstyle ensemble is fantasticly high skill! Percussive arrangements are not overwhelming but blend and compliment beautifully! No electronic looping here! The solo he spliced in shows this Dude gots some CHOPPPSS!!!
If there is a level of mastery above this I cannot comprehend it but I couldn’t have anticipated human creativity at this level, so what do I know? I suspect it is infinite.
Kent is the total package as an acoustic fingerstylist...melodically, arrangements.....all of it....and not to mention his impeccable sense of time and rhythm, perfection.
Kent’s special God-given talent never fails to stun me. I would give a lot to master the guitar half as well as Kent enjoys. Thanks for the treats Kent!
Again it's just mind blowing how I can hear the whole band playing from just you playing guitar! Amazing as always Kent! Thank you for this excellent arrangement!
Incredible, as usual. Living proof that there IS musical talent in the younger generations. And electricity isn't even required! There's still hope for the future...
OK ...this is it...amazing rendition of this difficult song..with all the nuances that is examplary for Steely Dan...now I'm gonna have a bonfire of all my guitars, whilst reminiscing back in time of how I wish I could play. Well ....I just heard what I wished for!!!
This is actually insane! Omg, I could watch this over and over till hell freezes over. Unbelievable mastery of an instrument like nothing I've seen/heard before. Wow!
Everything's been said so I'll just say that as a guitar player this is even more impressive to me. Once again you nailed a song and every detail of every instrument with world class musicians that would be hard to play even separately. But you did it all at the same time. And all in one take! Just beautiful my man!
premnas651 said it best..... all that hard work by all those people that produced something awesome.... and in saunters Kent and just quietly blows everyone out of the water with effortless looking feel and skill and humility to capture it all in his own unique way. Astonishing and I love that !! In an insane ego driven world of plastic and big mouths with nothing but bad attitude, Kent is a breath of fresh clean air and substance.
Every compliment y’all have writ…PLUS: the perfect inversion choices … and OMG: Kent’s TIME!!! (And when Kent covered Pete Christlieb’s tenor solo, tears flowed here.)
This is absolutely amazing !!!!! Thank you, Kent !!! It's amazing how you can figure out all these chords and then make them flow together so well, with percussion too. More Steely Dan please !!!
@@MarkFL98 Yes, Chet was one of the originals for the genre. But I'm not aware of any percussive right-hand technique. Personally, I prefer Tommy or Joe Robinson over Chet. I think they can play all his stuff even better.

I wish I could like it twice. One of the best so far. Great choice of song and the delivery is phenomenal. I saw just one guitar but felt like there was a whole band.
Amazing! Bass, drums, chords, melody, fantastic arrangement, with great time and feel on a harmonically sophisticated tune! I half expected him to play the solo on top of all that as well. Gifted player. Nice to hear that his live performances are just as good! 👏👏👏
Kent you are a legend of this time and the platform. Deffo one of my favourites. Proud of you - always inspiring. Make more Kents or Kentinas please, tomorrow needs your energy.
so amazing! For Kent to have such a feel for a song older than him by decades! Just great! Becker and Fagan would be totally amazed! Love it!!! Especially the sax parts adapted to the guitar, and the melody line played so adeptly!
Kent, you make it seem so effortless and yet there’s so much emotion in your playing. It’s incredible to me that there’s is this much all around talent in one person. Bravo!
Kent you are the best at what you do, don’t ever stop blowing us away with your fantastic renditions of how the song sounds to you!!! Keep it coming and keep it real brother!👏👌❤️
Okay. Enough. You can cover anything with a mastery that belies your age. Now, create something that is truly only yours. This is what I want to hear now. It won't be an opus; it might not be any good at all, but it will be all yours. That's what I want to hear now.
I remember my dad everytime I listen to this song. Hard to admit but I do miss him from time to time. It was difficult, how music was the only connection we had. Thank you for this cover
Steely Dan arrangements are some of the most complex there are. This young man is special.
He is so musical. His arrangements are always complete and sooooo. nuanced . A truly remarkable young man.

Me too! I saw SD in concert a few years ago in Reno. I knew some stagehands from Nevada Opera and they sneaked me in!

Agree totally
I love when young people play music from my childhood especially when it's fingerstyle guitar. That was a beautiful arrangement.
Great artistry and guitar mastery. Kent continues to amaze us with his artfulness. He's becoming a G.O.A.T in this genre. My 2 cents...
Definitely the GOAT. Another mind blowingly perfect arrangement of an incredibly complex song! Soooo good.
