      @R F Is that true? How come?

    • @brianwaugh9249
      @brianwaugh9249 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @R F Not necessarily true. This is plywood, NOT solid wood. Very little expansion and contraction particularly in a temperature controlled house. Due to the various direction of the strands in the plywood movement is negligible. Also, the beauty of this floor is that it is easily repairable. Remove and individual tile that is damaged and fix your floor easily. Waaay harder with a solid hardware floor, plus a heck of a lot more expensive.

    • @audratodd
      @audratodd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @R F I lived in a really cool carriage house with plywood floors and it withstood a ton of traffic. If you watch to the end of the video he explains why they chose plywood instead of regular wood--it doesn't expand and contract.

    Very nice.
    I helped my dad do this many years ago but we stained the plywood different shades before cutting it. When putting the pattern together the difference in shading of the plywood made it easier to put together and it looked amazing.
    Keep up the great work.
    God bless.

    I've been looking for an alternative flooring for my living room and this fits the bill. I've seen plywood used before, but they just cut it into planks and truthfully it was BORING. I watched your concrete overlay video and was impressed so I thought I'd check your other stuff out. This one got you a new subscriber. It's so refreshing to see a guy that actually knows what he's doing! Too many making over someone else's videos for content instead of knowing and teaching their content. And such a young guy too. This old geezer is totally a fan!

    Great job! I love the look and nothing about the job was incredibly complicated, but a heck of a lot of work. I can totally understand your comments about the monotony with cutting the pieces and laying them down. I like the comment you made on the podcast about being able to make adjustments if you started straying from a straight line with just a little trimming.

  • @techjblue
    @techjblue 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    My question is: engineered and floating floors are not fixed in place, because even if they do not expand and contract, the house will. So the pieces can raise without a tongue and groove or interlocking joint, causing the sharp acute angles to stick up over time.
    Just a thought.

      @@travismcleod5078 staining would be my choice for the effect as well, as the quality of the wood and lamination would be uniform.

    If you use Glitsa Wood flour cement you can just take all the saw dust you collected, mix it up with the clear wood flour cement and you will get the most accurate wood filler you need. Works perfectly for your situation.

    I love when people use plywood in unique ways. Plywood has such a negative reputation, even the nice stuff, so its so nice to see people use it in unique and exciting ways.

  • @parquetgreen1788

    It is really a very nice job, it is all about details. The birch plywood color is quite uniform. If there are two colors, it will be much better. I used to do hexigon parquety for one project in Thailand with two colors, one is natural oil, the other is fumed oak. The effect is much better.

  • @smc4lcc
    @smc4lcc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    These look great! As i mentioned before, i did a similar design with a coffee table, but i used reclaimed oak flooring. My only concern with the plywood was refinishing, since you can't really sand much until you start hitting other plys in the plywood. But since this is a low traffic area, it doesn't seem like it'll be an issue. Nice work Mike!

  • @soquilter4953
    @soquilter4953 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I started watching because the pattern you used is also a very old quilt pattern(I'm a quilter). There are a lot of the simple (and not so simple) quilt patterns that would look really great as a kind of wood/mosaic floor. Great job.

  • @mopar_dude9227
    @mopar_dude9227 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Having done a similar project, it is important that you do a trial fit before you cut all of your pieces. It is mentioned in the video, but after he has already cut everything. I cut a dozen pieces and did a trial fit to check all of my angles and found out I was a little off, a simple correction and I had a perfect fit. I also stained my pieces before I installed them, having 3 different shades of color (actually I only stained 1/3rd a medium shade, 1/3rd darker, and left 1/3rd unstained). This allows for a really nice 3D effect when assembling the floor. It is more work, but I think it was worth it.

    • @roeelcohen
      @roeelcohen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usally the need for sanding depends on the finish material, not sure what he used but thats should be written on the instructions

    • @haydonnewby5048
      @haydonnewby5048 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A light sand with 180 grit or higher is always worth it if you want to make sure to take care of any grain raise before the final coat

    • @jackstrubbe7608
      @jackstrubbe7608 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use the same product to finish off my paper-collage artworks, and the durability and UV factor it offers are worth the extra cost. If grain hasn't been raised on the first coat, it bonds perfectly if you do subsequent coats within a reasonable time. Because of possible grain raise, only after the first coat might be a useful need.

    Naturally, I would have paid more attention to the 3-D effect with the grain and perhaps even stained one of each of the hexagons in an effort to MC Escher the perception, but I haven't built a floor in over 20 years (Masonic checkerboard in marble) and nowadays am just distressing a rescued Broyhill bedside table with a metallic whitewash that will be hit with 0000 steel-wool tomorrow before I decide if it's done or needs inlays or decoupage or a fire-pit.

      Birch is actually really hard. The problem is that a lot of birch veneer plywood has a paper-thin top layer. Getting really good quality plywood is the key to a durable floor. It is a really cool idea and, while it may seem like a lot of work, I can tell you from experience doing a solid oak prefinished strip floor, the amount of time I spent working the bowed strips into position took a lot longer than this technique.
