First two episodes had incredible emotional depth and conveyed raw terror. The power fantasy is solid. The fights are exciting. But there is not enough emotional connection to actually feel fear beyond whether Jinwoo will make it through the next battle. And that's largely for his own sake. We don't get enough about his sister or mom to really care. We care by proxy of them being his, which cheapens it.
I'm a fan of the manhwa and the anime, but I think a lot of the fandom has accepted that the series is all style and very little substance. Their are so many characters that get names, personalities, and backstories for all of 10 panels and never appear again outside of the background. I highly recommend Lone Necromancer, which is basically "Bolo Beveling." The characters and world are far more fleshed out and the artwork is just as good imo.
The only thing i dislike about Solo leveling is how fast Jinwoo went snotty teen to Chad god. It felt like it happened in a single episode, it moved way too quick. It almost as if hes a completely different perosn to who he is in episode 1. He literally shares no similar character traits to his former self which doesnt make any sense. He doesnt suffer from any PTSD from when he was killed, he doesnt share any of the same emotions for that healer girl, his attitude is completely different to people he knew prior to getting the system. None of these things make sense and are completely unrealistic. The personality he currently has is the one he should have by like episode 80, not episode 5. They rushed his charcter development. Its the only bad thung about the show, everything else is a easy 10/10
Didn't knew it was possible for a series with *this* little personality put into it to get this massively popular I guess people really can ignore a lot of flaws as long as it looks good looking enough

I read the whole web novel because the manhwa couldn't catch up but unless the manhwa made significant changes to the story this guy is speaking fax. Solo levelling was doomed to fail from a story telling perspective

Solo levelling was just set up to fail from the beginning in my opinion. Atleast in story telling aspects lemme recount why. HUGE HUGE SPOILERS The whole concept of only he levels up basically makes it so that characters cannot afford any growth at all. Like tbh why would they focus on an E class when we all know we want sun Jin woo to end up with a strong girl but even she gets sidelined after jeju arc. And also the whole point of the Jin woo receiving his powers is so that his humanity slowly dies out so he can be a perfect vessel. With a guy who can have no emotions as the story progresses and the characters being irrelevant the story was straight up just set up to fail. I mean Jin woos dad who was hyped up like a lot only talks with Jin woo when he is dying which Jin woo is just sad about but not saying anything. The death of the chairman was more impactful than this. Jin woo is the only and i mean only dungeon levelling character who faces these problems. The guy from hounds of Baskerville atleast has some cool characters who grow up with him, the guy with the demonic swords has demonic sword to grow with, Remeberence has a mc with a party he helps grow. In my opinion when we talk about how great Korean manhwas are solo levelling dosent deserve to be speaken in the same sentence as Master pieces like orv,sss-suicide hunter and trash of the count family
Wdym I read the web novel 2 years ago and I had very similar problems about the story being set up to fail eventually(the piccolo effect would come in eventually) and the fact that Jin woo eventually loses his humanity so he becomes even more glad. Wait sorry idk if you wanna get spoiled but I have more grievences

The power creep going insane all the characters becoming irrelevant after Jeju arc all they exist for is to fawn over Jin woos character. The mc losing his emotions so he does not show any emotions nothing so we don't feel anything either and since he is so strong interesting characters just go away as they are not strong enough. And the ending which was literally the shittiest kinda ending ever. Murim login is basically solo levelling but way way better. The concept is really similar w8th only him getting strong faster but it's very balanced as the other characters also get strong and mcs growth isn't that fast thag we miss all the side characters he has so many interesting characters to talk to and develop that the deaths hit hard
