  • In this Physics video lecture in Hindi for class 11 we explained Simple Harmonic Motion ( SHM ) and Oscillation. Oscillation is a special category of periodic motion and simple harmonic motion is a special type of oscillation. One example of simple harmonic motion is the motion or oscillation of a spring block system. When a body repeats its motion after a certain period of time, it is called periodic motion. When periodic motion is about a mean position, it is called oscillation. When the applied force is proportional to the displacement of the body from the mean position, it is called simple harmonic motion.

    *1:-Motion* the movement of any body with the passing of time.
    *2:- periodic motion* Any object which repeats their motion with certain period and time is called periodic motion.
    *3:- non periodic motion* any object which doesn't repeat their motion.

    Types of periodic motion
    1: oscillation and 2: non oscillatory motion
    *1:- oscillatory motion:-* any object that repeats their motion on the mean position means on the center point with the certain period and time.
    *2:- non oscillatory motion* any object that repeats their motion with the certain time and period but does not oscillate on the mean point.
    *3:-Vibration:-* when the frequency comes too much faster then that will be called vibration.
    *4:-SHM:-* a motion in which the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement of the body from its mean position.

    Sir samjho agar mei vertical circular motion kar raha hu...rassi ko stone bandhe gol ghuma raha hu,but in vertical plane....So , agar mei use aise hi steady rakhu...(sirf gravitational influence me), can I call this state as mean position and hence vertical circular motion as oscillation?????

      Harmonic motion is the combination of Complex harmonic motion and Simple harmonic motion.
      Harmonic motion is basically oscillatory motion.
      Simple Harmonic Motion is motion that is purely sinusoidal at a constant amplitude and frequency. When you start adding things like damping, you get motion that looks sinusoidal, but whose amplitude decays with time. That's no longer simple harmonic motion. Now it's complex harmonic motion. But it's still harmonic motion.
