Shades - Hayden Stark, Derek Dunn, and Daniel Durrett

  • Hayden, Daniel, and I decided to put on a little in-studio show of the 3 Bayadere variations. Enjoy our SHADEy mess! ;)
    FYI... this video was made to make people smile/laugh/etc. We have no intentions of becoming professional male dancers “en pointe.” Part of the gag is wearing tutus, putting our hair in a silly bun (Derek), and exaggerating the choreography. The compliments are much appreciated, and we now realize how hard dancing in pointe shoes really is, but the purpose of this video was to have fun and be silly. We hope you enjoy!

    You may have been trying to make people laugh, but you actually showed a level of excellence in dancing to be commended! Many men would never bother to put on pointe shoes, let alone dance in them! What you thought was exagerrated choreography actually looked exactly like what female dancers are required to do, in extending their bodies and holding difficult positions until the last micro-second to bring out the most emotion possible in the production and the audiences' reactions.
    All three of you are actually quite talented and strong! Thank you for sharing this performance with us!

    This definitely takes the “walk a mile in his/her shoes” principle to its utmost.
    Also, I’ll say this: MALE AND FEMALE BALLET DANCERS ARE **EXTREME ATHLETES.**
    Anyone who doesn’t realize that needs only to observe the control, flexibility, strength, & agility, all in the context of what looks like grace and ease. It ain’t easy!
    I could watch Derek all day - he looks like he’s having a ton of fun.
    To all of you, including your female co-conspirators: I appreciate y’all having fun with your profession and with your colleagues, and thank you for sharing the fun with us!

    Can I just say, to all the people down here who saying that only a man truly secure in his masculinity would do something like this: you are absolutely half right. That's a revolutionary statement as far as men who are masculine and heteronormative, but what about the one's who aren't? What about the guys who identify as more feminine??? I don't know anything about these dancers. They could very well be straight and cis, but if they're not, that's okay too!
    It makes me sad to see people moaning about "why'd they wear tutus" or "ewww... but they're dudes". The pointe (pun intended) is that this was very well done. I don't think the majority of people are realising that this is a complete dynamics shift for these guys. Men aren't allowed to use soft, pretty port de bras in ballet, they don't usually do too many adages, extensions, or simple light allegro when performing, and they never dance on pointe unless the character is laughable and intended to be ugly. They have trained for years as male dancers and they suddenly made this complete shift to make everything feminine. And you know what: THEY DID FUCKING AMAZING. I just had to say that... my conscience wouldn't let me rest until I did.

    • @LiveLaughLove8489
      @LiveLaughLove8489 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rachel Bono so when we say “secure in masculinity”people generally mean a straight man feels comfortable and un threatened bu wearing female clothes. It’s like if a male wore women clothing on average and had to be secure enough to wear mens.
      It works that way too. But generally speaking men are afraid they’ll look less strong. Less caveman like and butch or whatever if they show emotion, dress in females clothing for some reason, etc.
      That’s the general gist of it.

    Impressive! Truly impressive! It was also so interesting to see how even when men do female dances, it always looks like strength and force and not elegance and softness. I love that, it's such a sight to behold! I wish there were now female dancers who dance male parts of dances.
    Also it is so awe striking to see how much strength and control and composure it takes to perform like this. Wow! I loved this so much. And definitely, the Black guy was the most graceful.

    HI Derek, I have a question. Since guys are becoming very accomplished at point work why isn't there a movement to start choreographing point specifically for male dancers and what they are good at. I've only seen men doing female variations and trying to simulate the lightness and femininity (like the Trocks) or doing Bottom in Midsummer. Do you know of any choreographers experimenting? I think men could find a whole new point vocabulary and stretch the boundaries of movement.

    • @ritawing1064
      @ritawing1064 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Sara Newton yes I quite agree, if the chaps can develop pointe work, it would benefit from some serious attention from choreographers - and from losing the air of pastiche.

    The 3rd guy's skin tone is so gorgeous! I know pointe shoes shod be made in skin tones rather than pink, but With his skin being so dark and the shoes being so light it almost looks like a painting or edited photo where you see the silhouette of a dancer but the shoes remain pink.
