I just got to flying this on the servers. What a monster. I thought I was a mediocre 109 pilot having a some rough sorties against them but the plane is so fast and maneuverable it is hard to beat.
Strange how they omitted the tail wheel lock. Using it was a must with the Tempest V on IL-2 1946 when taking off. Similar trimming set up though to 1946 Tempest. The real life terminal dive speed of the Tempest V was 657 MPH hence why it could catch the Me-262 from a power dive.
I never got to fly the Tempest in 1946, but it's a lot of fun in this iteration. I haven't been in a position to attack any 262s yet though...I'm not sure why the tailwheel lock was omitted. I feel like I remember reading something about it on the forums but I just can't find it.
@@RequiemsACTL I've flown it recently on the now (graphically upgraded via Team Daedalus) IL-2 1946 Hyper Lobby - Orel war server. Back in July 2019I was on the Normandy 1944 map and spotted a bunch of AI B-17's being attacked by a player fighter, a Fw-190 A8 or A9 over a couple of miles away. He saw me coming and did what Fw-190 pilots always do in sims and real life by diving away. IT works for dodging Spitfires and P-51 but not P-47 or Tempests. I switched the supercharger into 2nd gear and went after him from 25,000 Feet hitting over 1,000 KPH at one point. I rapidly caught him up in the dive at full throttle, closing the gap as he hedge hopped on the deck. I gave him a 2 second burst from 50 metres, tearing the wings off. With the prop set at 70% the level flight speed on the deck was 860 KPH which was considerably faster than he was doing. I'm yet to fly it in IL-2 GB but as all IL-2 aircraft have the exact same performance envelopes (historic good and bad points) across all their titles, it should be a familiar plane to fly. Only fault on the IL-2 GB Tempest V I've noticed is that the engine sounds wrong and isn't loud enough compared to actual recordings of the Tempest V. In IL-2 1946 they have it pretty close.
What an awesome story Andy :-) That's the good thing about 1946, such a large stable of aircraft and theaters to use...Not having the heavies with the extra crew members (AI) is going to pose a problem in the current Il-2, so hopefully they can figure something out to include them. The B-25 AI has been a nice addition though. Agreed on the Tempest sound, it definitely needs a bit more of roar to it.
The Tempest never did have a tailwheel lock. And this confirmed by the pilots notes I've read for different MKs of Tempests. (The Typhoon didn't have one either, although the Sea Fury did). So this is correct!
That was probably the true airspeed dive limit, not the indicated airspeed. No prop plane can hit those speeds indicated. Even if the airframe could handle it (which it couldn't), compressibility effects would surely come into play way before those speeds.
Thanks for the tutorial Requiem! 2st time I jumped into the tempest I noticed the engine went hot at anything over about 40% throttle but I probably didnt have the internet sa les open for cooling properly. Flying VR limits my ability to have enough of the many buttons programmed to my throttle and joystick so I'm working on that! One thing I noticed is this plane's pitch trim and roll or rudder trim does not function with the buttons I've programmed that operate trim in many other aircraft. Il have to check settings for a different trim key, hopefully there is one!
There is now an addition trim axis setup in addition to the keybinds for trims depending on how they're configured in the aircraft. If it has a wheel..use axis trim, if it has a button...use the button trim.
@@RequiemsACTL Thank you very much! That's a huge help! I was just going over all the settings and noticed many new spaces and had my trim bound to button or 4 way switch and they didnt work in P51 so now I know why! I Cant express how much I appreciate your video tutorials, not to mention priceless replies to questions!!!
@@kackodatslav402 Yes I grabbed the re-release updated edition in 2004 as the old paperback was worn out from re-reading. A timeless classic passed on to my son.
I wish I could reverse the shutter controls just for the Tempest because I have always used a lower switch to reduce radiator and upper switch to increase radiator,it is logical, but in the tempest Down = 100% Rad :-)
It definitely slows you down. There's no requirement to keep it open outside of taxi/takeoff/landing or even climb if the temperature stays within limits.
You've probably figured this out now but don't unleash the full power for long in this thing, I may have burned the engine up prematurely in a fight with two 190s lol ;_; Amazing plane, just use the power properly.
There aren't any authoritative recordings of a Sabre II engine, so it will be interesting to hear one when the two restorations ongoing, are completed.
Yeah I'm not a fan of how the engine sounds right now. It doesn't sound like it has a lot of power to me. Maybe when we can get to hear a real one again they can revisit it
How did you get your fuel mix lever to toggle? For me I have to hold it down and it moves slowly. Hard to tell where the middle (50%) is without technochat.
It's not a functional device, but I try to explain everything in a cockpit as it may become functional one day and I'll always have people asking what something is if I don't explain a particular gauge or instrument
Yeah according to the Tempest manual there was a cockpit heater and windscreen deicer pump on the right hand side forward of the electrical box, but I usually only include stuff that people will be able to use in Il-2 (for the most part). I believe the Saber engine used in the Tempest was fuel injected so there is no need for Carburetor heat.
I tried it the other day against a AI BF 109 E, and believe it or not I could stay on its tail with partial to full flaps down, this plane as a lots of power and it gives so many options...of course I was not carrying any ordonnance at that moment. And keep in mind it was AI but still very impressive plane none the less.
I'm having so much trouble with this game every plane I fly I feel like I'm not getting the most out of it, and it's just struggle to keep the aircraft from overheat and destroying the engine, any advise would be appreciated.
Sounds like you're running in emergency power. If you press O when in-flight you'll see the tech specs page where you want to fly by the engine limits prescribed in there. Anything higher than max continuous power has a time limit.
@@RequiemsACTL Really I find myself just trying to find the right prop pitch, mixture, and power combinations, and a few radiator settings for every single plane in game that I have, and thats just time consuming, but I sure as hell enjoy it. I need to stick with one plane till I'm super comfortable with it I think that might help me.

Once again another beautiful job, thanks. Just one question, what is the allowable time limit @ 11 lbs ?
Hey Stephen, the time limit should be the same as if you were flying with the 7 lbs boost limit as it's a different engine, but I haven't tested it...

Why wont the Tempest turn on the ground? The steering doesn't work for me.
Use brakes at the same time as rudder for differential braking. Also ensure your RPM is maximum while taxiing
cheers.
No mention of windscreen defroster or cockpit heater. Surely these were available. And what about carburetor heater?
Yeah according to the Tempest manual there was a cockpit heater and windscreen deicer pump on the right hand side forward of the electrical box, but I usually only include stuff that people will be able to use in Il-2 (for the most part). I believe the Saber engine used in the Tempest was fuel injected so there is no need for Carburetor heat.
The Air Combat Tutorial Library - Right, no need for carburetor heater with fuel injection.
Are the notes that pop up actually in the game or is this some you created for the video?
The notes that pop up are what I make. The "pilots notes" text is used from a part in-game but the takeoff/landing stuff is from RL manuals
so i havent got boddenplatte yet, is can the tempest dogfight? or more of an interceptor and ground pounder? looks so heavy and fast to me
It can hold it's own for sure. I love flying it!

i cant use the left nor the right wheel brake separately, how do i fix that?
There are no toe brakes in the airplane. Using the rudder pedals at the same time as using the brake lever gives you differential braking
