FNQ Part 6 - The Miserable Short cut

  • Our winter tour of the far north - Cairns, the Daintree and the Atherton Tablelands, including the western savannah country.
    Leaving Innot Hot Springs we followed the main Savannah Way with a tailwind to Mount Garnet. Chatting and lingering in town made us late on our planned ride to California Creek, so we camped in town. This was lucky as it rained heavily overnight and into next morning. We stayed a rest day and took a cabin. This delay however made our traverse of the Lappa Trail and resupply in Dimbulah less feasible as the weekend loomed, so we chose to take a short-cut. The 'short-cut' that you never want to take. After a 10 hour ride to get to Irvinebank (well after dark) we had another late start due to rain, and a solid if short day's ride to Herberton. The roads however had their inspirational moments as we were travelling some real outback roads, very different to bicycle touring back home.
    Sorry about the lousy sound in the last part of the video. Water in the mic seems to have been an ongoing problem.

    That looks like a great short cut ... with the right bike. Cheers and thanks for sharing ;

      The video. does not show just how steep it was. But it would be good (still hard) with any lighter weight bike

      My wife has a Giant Sedona '93 MTB frame, converted for touring. Mine is a Thorn Nomad Mk2 expedition touring bike. Both are running Rohloff 14-speed gear-hubs.

      We saw no cattle at all on this stretch. It was the earlier section (3 days prior) through Glen Gordon Station that had wandering cattle, but they always just ran away.
